Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Ah the record store....I remember camping out at Best Buy in Duluth when Pearl Jam's "Vitalogy" came out on vinyl (IIRC) 2 weeks before the CD. Worth it. Love the vinyl. It IS because of the unique scratches/jumps/quirks because of your player that makes the music that more awesome. It's like movies with traditional film vs digital. I like the "cigarette burns."

totally agree with this. I'm ok with cd's but I LOVE vinyl. the sound, the larger artwork, the character really.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

I watched a documentary on the band Silkworm last night, wow it was very very good!

I own both Bottomless Pit records, but was largely unfamiliar with the prior band Silkworm

now I'm going to have to pick up their stuff...the 90's was so full of great guitar-rock bands they were off the radar for me apparently

You're right about quirks. On my vinyl copy of Superunknown, because "Black Hole Sun" comes at the end of Record 2 Side B, all the notes sound half a step higher (sharp). I believe this is because it is recorded on the innermost grooves.

that might be due to the length of that side of the LP. basically you want vinyl to be 22 minutes and under per side for optimum sound quality. once you go over that the grooves are very compact and the sound suffers

I did not know that. Without breaking out the LP, I can't remember if there are three or four songs on that side of the record, but that might explain a lot depending on whether "Mailman" is on Side A or Side B.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

I was watching The Social Network for the first time today, and during the closing, just before the ending credits begin to appear, the Beatles' Baby, Your a Rich Man starts to play, and it's actually the Beatles' version. 1) When did they begin licensing their music to movies? 2) How much must that have cost the producers?

Maiden - Live After Death

**** You Monday!

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Slightly Stoopid - Chronchitis, Closer to the Sun, Everything You Need & Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid

on shuffle

Definitely my favorite of the White-boy Reggae bands although they're really not just reggae - not even close.

They're SoCal which means punk, ska, reggae, funk and dub and mixed into a fun jumble.

EDIT: Second time through... :)

That's a loaded question for me because l like all of the 'Mats except the last two, and R.E.M. lost me only for their last three before Collapse Into Now.

For the 'Mats, Let It Be is quintessential and a must, and Tim and Pleased To Meet Me are too. However, if you want them at their rawest and punkest, Sorry Ma Forgot To Take Out The Trash, Stink and Hootenany are not only truly representative, but are filled with great song-writing and moments of awe.

With R.E.M. I think you have to have Murmur, Reckoning, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, Green and Out of Time. If that draws you in grab Monster, New Adventures In Hi-Fi, Fables of the Reconstruction and Collapse...

That's a lot of records I know, but it's what I meant by the question being loaded. I could probably figure out how to burn an mp3 disc with everything either recorded in studio and send it to you.

Realize that these are my opinions. I have a feeling that others will have their own suggestions.

For REM, I only like them through the album Green.

Here's how I'd start and how I'd rank their albums by priority and quality of songs:

1) Reckoning - very mellow, but my first and favorite REM album
2) Document - yeah this is the "hit" album, but a lot of the "unknown" songs on here are stellar - King of Birds, Oddfellows, Exhuming, Disturbance, Finest etc.
3) Life's Rich Pageant - pretty rocking compared to what came before and nearly every song is solid
4) Murmur - a lot like Reckoning (mellow folky-alternative) only not as good
5) Green - the song Stand is a black mark, but there are a few good ones on here, notably World Leader Pretend
6) Fables of the Reconstruction - only a couple of good songs on here although Driver 8 & Can't Get... are essentials

I'm no expert on the Replacements and like about only half of the songs on each of their albums. They have a good compilation called something like "All For Nothing/Nothing For All" that's a 2-disc best of and b-sides. I have this and also all of their albums. If I only had the compilation, I'd probably be fine. Like I said though, I'm no Replacements scholar.

Yeah Solo, this is who you should probably listen to for these guys as I think you're more into punk than I am.

For the 'Mats, I tend to like the quieter moments and well crafted pop-songs, the latter being almost blasphemous to real fans.

Skyway, Here Comes a Regular, Swinging Party, Talent Show...

I love those songs too and have been avid Paul fan to this day, but I grew up on the raw stuff. That said Let It Be is my favorite because they draw you in with the hooks of I Will Dare, punk you with Tommy Gets his Tonsils Out, make you love Paul's songwriting with Androgynous, then a wicked cover of Kiss' Black Diamond, heartwarming again with Unsatisfied and who doesn't love Gary's Got a Boner? :D

Yeah, the three that you referenced in your first post are what I usually shuffle along with Don't Tell a Soul (:o). My only difference is that my favorite is probably Tim.

Looks like I know my playlist for tomorrow morning!

this is exactly what I was looking for with suggestions, thanks!

I've seen a couple of these titles in used bins here lately so I'm going to start there with what I can and see which ones really hit me. I'm pretty sure I'll really dig R.E.M if I can base my feelings on the eponymous disc I heard years and years ago.

Replacements are more of a mystery to me. I love the Westerburg songs on the Singles soundtrack but have only heard "when it began" and maybe 1-2 other songs from them which is really odd considering I've read and love "Our band could be your life" and have loved the Huskers and old Soul Asylum since forever.

awesome thanks! I'm almost embarrassed to say it but the first I really sort of paid attention to R.E.M they were already a huge stadium-type band so to have these suggestions on albums prior to the "Losing My Religion" era is very helpful (though I'm going to pick up Out Of Time and the later ones as well)

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

You guessed it...

The Replacements - Let It Be, Tim, Pleased To Meet Me & Don't Tell a Soul

on shuffle

Everybody wants to be someone's here... :)

EDIT: After 44 or so songs, ended with Bas tards of Young.

Serendipity

My lists in order of when you should pick them up:

The Replacements(my fave band of all-time)

Let It Be
Tim
Pleased to Meet Me
Hootenanny
Don't Tell a Soul(it gets slagged on a lot, but I love this record. But yeah, it's "polished" and "mature" , but it's still terrific. There's some brilliant songs on this record. "Achin' to Be" is one of my absolute faves.)

How can you not like this song?
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ku7GeM8Zz_s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

"20 paces at dawn
come 20 questions we'll get wrong"

God, Westerberg could turn a phrase.

Or this?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hXXxQGeOoBI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

"And the things you hold dearly
are scoffed at and yearly
judged once and then left behind"

Stink(if just for "Go")
All Shook Down.(maybe even more polished than DTAS, but it's got its moments. "Nobody" is wonderful)
Sorry Ma(yeah, it's raw and punky, but it's The Replacements trying to be something they aren't, a hardcore punk band. Still, "Johnny's Gonna Die" is a classic.)

REM. For a four or five year period, these guys were gods.

Reckoning(Murmur gets all the acclaim, deservedly, but Reckoning is even better)
Murmur
Lifes Rich Pageant(the first record to capture their live sound on album)
Document
Green
Out of Time
Chronic Town(might be part of a greatest hits or rare tracks compilation by now, not sure. Edit: yep, checked, and it's part of the Dead Letter Office cd.)
Fables of the Reconstruction
Automatic For The People(people love this, and it's a good album, but I dunno, I favor the earlier stuff. Sometimes, when you mature, you lose something, some spark. Ask U2.)
Dead Letter Office(you need to hear Pylon's(another Athens band) "Crazy" and the song Windout, which The Fleshtones covered)

Maybe New Adventures in Hifi, but I wouldn't even bother with the rest.
