Warrant - Dog Eat Dog

Laugh all you want, this is actually pretty solid and offers impressive musical variety for a hair band; haters can suck it. "Machine Gun", "Bonfire", "All My Bridges Are Burning", and "Sad Theresa" are the obvious singles, while "Andy Warhol Was Right" is the most blatant attempt at mock-grunge mediocrity. However if, like me, you dig both sides of the Great 1991 Fence, I'll be damned if this doesn't at least qualify as 'listenable' from start to finish.

I remember the singer breaking down on Behind The Music about the label forcing "Cherry Pie" being the single off of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," saying he wanted to put a bullet in his head after that experience (he was literally in tears). Not that I think Warrant is any good, but I felt for him.

As for me, the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Amazing.

Cherry Pie is uber-cheesy, terrible fun. Uncle Tom's Cabin is legit good, though the rest of that album is average at best.

You mentioned that interview, but Jani Lane later said that he was glad he wrote a song that has stuck over the years.

Can I clear the air on that? They [VH1 producers] just caught me on a bad day. It was a bad moment – I was going through a divorce, my mom had just passed away, all this stuff was going on – and they sit me down in a chair and wanna start grilling me with questions, and I didn't wanna be there, so...You know, push that interview to the side, I'm happy as a clam to have written a song that is still being played and still dug by so many people. It's hard enough to write a song, let alone one that sticks around.

Frankly, I think he had major depression issues after the whole hair band thing went down in flames, and obviously drank waaaaaaay too much booze.

Good to know. Thanks. I was a major hater until that show...then kinda felt bad. Good to know I can hate again. ;)

The Black Crowes have announced that their hiatus is over, they're going to start touring again, first a European tour in March and then an American tour starting in April. They're my favorite band and they're back together again. Woot! :D

Archive - Controlling Crowds

Archive is a new discovery for me...

-mind blown-

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Maybe The Edge's raunchiest guitar workout.

I like Interpol, and I like She Wants Revenge. What are some similar artists I should check out?

These won't sound all the same but will have a similar theory and style (you may have heard of many of these so forgive me):

-Editors
-The National
-Placebo
-Surfer Blood
-Deer Tick
-The Xx
-Black Rebel Motorcycle Clud
-Spiritualized
-Cloud Cult

I agree with the recommendation of Joy Division, but I assume you've heard them already and find the comparison a bit over-rated.

I mentioned this a few pages back, but I really love this album...

If you've never listened to The Cure's - 17 Seconds, you might like that too.

I agree with SS that the Joy Division (other than the vocal delivery) comparison is a stretch. I like Interpol a whole lot more than Joy Division.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

To echo Gurtholfin: The Cure rules. Although my favorite album by them is still Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

Ahhh, 1987-88 with my combat boots and black jeans. Why didn't someone kick my ***? :D

Great album but it's so emotionally tied (for me) to a certain girl that I can't listen to it anymore. Don't believe I've listened to it since 1989 or so. That album was part of the soundtrack of my first real relationship. We were head over heels for almost 2 years and then... not so much. :)

Best time of my (late) teens followed by the worst.

I'm good with it now, but for me, that album must stay in the golden summer of '88.

Have I shared too much? :o:D

EDIT:
Oh yeah, and 17 Seconds isn't necessarily my favorite Cure album (although it may be), I just thought it was closest to Interpol in terms of their (The Cure's) post-punk style at that time.

One other thing... a metal head room mate of mine in 89 was always bashing on them until I finally made him listen to something other than the MTV hits that he had heard and once he heard the "more complex guitar work" than he expected, he jumped in and greatly broadened his musical taste and saw the Cure several times live.

Nah. We all have certain songs/albums tied to a girl. I have yet to meet a guy who doesn't have "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" tied to a girl/story. ;)

As for Kiss Me, yes it was emotional for me too, but it covered all the emotions. Dynamic album.

Yeah, it was a huge favorite of mine and I'll need to check it out again at some point. Still have the CD of course. Probably their best album. I hear a lot of the songs when I listen to a live album or a concert.
