What will the 2000's be remembered for?

Re: What will the 2000's be remembered for?

I'd honestly already forgotten. :p

Interesting that despite the 24 Hour News Cycle's attempt to turn every story involving a missing white baby into the Lindbergh Kidnapping, nobody mentioned a "human interest" story.

I think the thing I'll remember most is Gary Condit, and how he was probably the luckiest S.O.B. ever.

or those who don't remember, he was the Congressman who was involved in Chandra Levy's disappearance in the summer of 2001. One September morning, events occured that pushed Mr. Condit's affairs to the back burner of the media, and he's been mostly forgotten.

So, Mr. Condit, you can start hanging out with O.J. in the "Lucky ******** who got away with it" Club.

Re: What will the 2000's be remembered for?

-9/11
-Elected officials putting politics and hate above common good
-Complete dependence on PDAs
-Traditional reporting largely replaced by blogging
-Twitter, Facebook, etc.
-Reality TV
-Glorification of hip hop lifestyle in music and sports
-4 sho horibel speling and foniks bcuz texting boom - lol

Outside of 9/11 and some of the political vitriol, most everything will be technology and internet related stuff.

Re: What will the 2000's be remembered for?

- 9/11, the Iraq and Afghan wars, and all the subsequent constitutional violations because of them.
- Obama
- The increasing electronic connection of the world

It won't be until the 2010's that we'll see the fall of America as a global economic power, although it's starting now.

It turns out that maybe the only thing 'he got away with' was an affair, which (along with the media's coverage of the story) cost him his job the following year.

Re: What will the 2000's be remembered for?

On the cultural front, the 2000s will most likely be remembered as the decade in which the entertainment industry collectively threw up its hands and admitted that there officially are no new ideas.

In the film industry this decade will long be remembered as the decade of sequels and remakes. While there may have been a few memorable movies, mostly this decade gave us an unending stream of poorly conceived and ill executed franchises.

Granted, there have been a few bright spots: The Shield, Lost, Mystic River and Dark Knight almost make it worth having to suffer through the glut of garbage that has been hoisted upon a public undeserving of such abuse. For instance, Nicholas Cage - need I say more?

Our voyeuristic (sp) impulses have been more than addressed with reality programming. No script, no plot, no thought ... no problem. Just about any imbicile can get on television if they just consent to have cameras follow them everywhere they go.

In the music end of the entertainment industry, the 2000s merely cemented what had started in the 1990s, the complete death of anything worth listening to on the radio. Corporate concerns dominate an industry dependent upon an "artist" selling big each time an album is released. They may have failed to notice that the album has become obsolete for all but a few dinosaurs like me who actually want something to hold in hand. Downloading has become the favored way of acquiring music, and the music industry is still trying to figure this out.

On a positive note, Apple's iPod really has revolutionized the way people listen to music. I mean 1700 songs in the palm of my hand on shuffle play is a wonderful thing. And since I control the content I'll never be let down.

Also, the 2000s will be remembered for taking the phrase, "famous for being famous" to absurd new levels. Can someone please remind me exactly what Kim Kardashian is famous for? Why do I know her name? What did she DO to claim such noteriety? Did the Gosselins ever actually have jobs or careers? How did they escape from a basic cable show I had never heard of to become the most annoying thingon television since static? Paris Hilton gained her fame from, what was it now? Did the sex tape come before the reality series, or was it the European party circuit that preceded the jail time? I got lost somewhere between supermarket tabloid covers.

I don't believe there has ever been a time like the 2000s where so many unaccomplished people have become so well known. Thank the good Lord in heaven for Chesley Sullenberger, but he is outnumbered by celbutants by about 500 to 1.

Often what comes tome mind when we think of a decade is the cheesiest aspects of personal comportment. The 60s was filled with dirty, drug using hippies, the 70s was wide lapels and white guys with afros, the 80s was big hair, spandex, and leg warmers. The 2000s will go down with a much longer lasting choice. This became the ink decade. Once, to get a tatoo, you needed to have served in the military, been a longshoreman, or done time in jail. Now any poser can get one. Every tart in a pair of hip huggers is flashing her tramp stamp for the world to see. Please keep it private.

I am constantly seeing emaciated stick figures who should have invested their income in food rather than the permanent advertising with which they adorn themselves. I've never understood why someone would pay some scumbag good money to get stabbed with a needle full of ink. I've never understood the appeal of monograming yourself. The message is lost on me. It seems that if you are desperately trying to find a way to express yourself there has to be a more profound way than letting someone else draw a picture on your body.

Re: What will the 2000's be remembered for?

While I did not vote for him, my hope is the 2000s will be remembered for the United States actually electing something other than a white male as president. In 2008 did this nation, for the first time in a long time, take a lasting step towards living up to our ideals?

My belief is it will be remembered for September 11, 2001 and much of the surrounding events which came from that day.

My fear is it will be remembered for this:

Every tart in a pair of hip huggers is flashing her tramp stamp for the world to see. Please keep it private.

Alum in 51 hit it right on the head.

I can't add to it. I bow to his awesome knowledge of culture.

Paris Hilton is famous because some Fox news website reporter wrote a series of articles of some dummy LA socialite was using her pet as an accessory and was abusing the dog in the process. Lets think about that, shaln't we?

Ok, so you got Paris Hilton down. Now tell me (and Alum) why Kim Kardashian is famous.

Oh, and why the Octamom deserves her own television show.

She was famous before that, for her sex tape with Rick (Rich?) Solomon.

no, she wasn't... that was at least a year after the puppy bit... we're going way back here... I would say pre-9/11.

edit: I am quite sure the animal stuff was before the sex tapes because nobody would know or give a **** who she is to have relevance for a sex tape.

Housing babble and the crash and the biggest bailout in history for the rabble banks and where the "Fed" loyalty lies gutter.
I wish we had reality TV for what these traitors (traders) are doing to our country. Law and Order: SEC ... or maybe who wants to be a billionaire, you get to compete against others trading derivitatives.

I got an opportunity to tour the Genome Center at Washington University in St. Louis recently. It was insane. With the technolgoy that is going on in genetics I wouldnt be suprised if in a matter of a few years you would be able to walk in off the street give someone $20 and have your genome mapped out in an hour (or less).

Kim is "famous" because her father was one of OJ's lawyers, she's from LA and she's very curvy. Sex sells, and it always has. That part isn't a phenomenon of the decade...there's just more cameras now and more people who devote their lives to covering this crap. Imagine if they put their "talents" to better use...

Does the Octomom have her own show? I thought she hoped for one but it was turned down by pretty much every network.

That's what will be remembered about this decade: How voyeuristic we've become and how it is possible thanks to the explosions of reality shows and personal blogs. Or, as The Onion put it after 9/11: America longs to care about meaningless **** again.

We did.
