It's embarrassing when a FARK "Florida" news story is the same thing that happened in your own town (though in our case substitute liquor store ATM and successful, albeit almost immediately caught and arrested).

If there is anything I have learned from this board, besides the fact that Freddy Meyer is a hack, it's that if something weird happens in Michigan, it's probably Saginaw.

You think Kepler's (non)belief is held any less sincerely than yours? Or is somehow less legitimate - his is a second-class belief in your mind? Fortunately, the US government disagrees with you even if US culture does not - a few billion more shots like that and it might come close to equaling the number of shots Christians take at non-believers, Muslims, Jews, gays, etc every. single. day. Better be able to take it if you want to dish it out - there is no right not to be offended.

Well hold on a second, let's talk about this. Let me say in advance though that if you personally take mentions of the Black Mass as a knee to the groin, that was not what I was getting at in my post. I was after a different low blow. ;)

First of all, I doubt very much whether these Satanists are in any way interested in Catholicism. They've got their liturgy and I don't expect them to have any more sophisticated sense of its historiography than the typical Catholic does about his own rituals. I doubt Satanists are any more interested in specifically mocking Catholics than say Pastafarians are. I do suspect that as with FSM there is a strong sense of the mocking all organized religious observance for "Satanism." It seems like a rather ordinary exercise in "Middle Finger Philosophizing" where the (typically sophomoric) subject feels that the act of shocking people is ipso facto profound, like wearing an anarchy t-shirt or proposing Reaganomics as a legitimate economic theory.

Secondly, even if they did, mockery is fair game under the First Amendment.

Personally, though raised as a Catholic by extremely pious Catholics who I revere, I don't take the Black Mass as anything other than grist for Hammer films. I even always have to look up when Candlemass Eve is (it's February 2).
