The Gophers enter the season with a 49-game winning streak, but we all know that will be broken at some point. Which opponent stops their run? If you'd like to win this prediction outright, the first tiebreaker is the date of the game, second tiebreaker is margin (0, 1, 2, etc.), and third tiebreaker is final score. Exhibitions don't count.

OK, I'm game.

November 9, 2013.

St. Cloud State Huskies (HEY, no laughing until the end!!)

Margin of win--1

Final Score: SCSU 3 tGopher 2

ARM, you will be impressed with the face lift of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (us rebel fans will still affectionately call it "The Concrete Center").

I am still trying to find the new mural of Top Row, Skeeterman and myself.

Duluth. I don't know which game; I just get a bad feeling about that trip.

I hope to get there next week for one of your games with the "Q". What are my chances of seeing The Boomer?

Good poll. Vaguely recall a discussion on this board about the all time record of UNH. If memory serves me correctly that number is a 56 game winning streak. Minnesota needs 7 more wins to equal and 8 to win it. I believe UNH's undefeated streak was longer, but don't recall the exact number.

Either way game 7 is vs Benmidji at Benmidji Oct 25, Game 8 is the next day against Benmidji as well. I think they won't get there. They will fall in Duluth at the hands of the Bulldogs on Oct 18...Score 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs....to stop the streak at 53.

I don't think of UNH and Minnesota streaks in the same terms - different eras. Kind of like comparing Canadiens or Yankees of old to leagues with 30+ teams.....both acccomplishments of their times but parameters are so different.

Re: What team ends the Minnesota winning streak?

I decided to be slightly less of a homer and vote for Colgate. :D

Re: What team ends the Minnesota winning streak?

I was a homer and voted for my Buckeyes, but we may not get the chance as we don't play Minnesota until 12/7 in Columbus. If others are right, the streak will have ended before our series.

It is still the record, and there is no asterisks beside it like some of the baseball records.

Thanks for posting that link. Given the subject and timing, I thought it would be good idea re-post my post from the end of last season. Made the research I did at the time worthwhile:

Decided to do some research. With DC "apparently" in limbo, went to the trusty UNH media guide.

http://issuu.com/unhathletics/docs/wih_2012-13_final_guide

And this is what I found:

1 - UNH has the most wins all time in Women's D1 hockey, 711 wins, followed by Providence with 645.
.......The other programs in the top five are Dartmouth, North Eastern and Brown.
2 - UNH is fourth in All time winning percentage with .750. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Mercyhurst are the top three in that order.
3 - UNH was dominating in the late 70's early 80's, with TWO undefeated seasons in a ROW.

Here are those seasons:

77-78 15-0-0
78-79 16-0-1 (The tie was the second game of the season)
79-80 20-0-0
80-81 21-0-0
81-82 18-1-1 (The loss was the second game of the season)

Two major streaks in this set of games:

- 74 game undefeated streak 73-0-1
- 56 game winning streak

I don't think there has been another team that comes close to this, other than the current Minnesota winning streak of 49.
(IIRC, Wisconsin had a 32 or 36 game winning streak a few years ago, hopefully a WCHA expert will be able to fill in those details).

If the above are indeed the records, Minnesota will need to win the first 8 games out of the gate next year to break that record.

Maybe DC can be on hand for the record breaker, to commemorate the event. :D

Better yet....Schedule the 8th game of the season vs UNH at the Whitt.......

Even if Minny goes on to start the season 8-0 to set the all time winning streak record, there are a few UNH records that may NEVER be broken, the 74 game undefeated streak and TWO undefeated seasons in a row. No one in either D1 or D3 has ever come close to any of those numbers in female hockey.

Anything I can do to promote your agenda. ;)

Show me detailed schedules and results. Maybe then I'll entertain a theory of comparability in winning / undefeated streak achievement. If that's the objective.

Exactly. One record occurred in the NCAA era, the other long before it. Exhibitions like the one versus Japan get included in the UNH number; only official games are counted in the current mark. Obviously, the Wildcats had to overcome other unique challenges to stay unbeaten for so many seasons. We were reminded last night of the hurdles that must be cleared when starting over with a new team and so many new student athletes.

Minnesota owns the NCAA record. That in no way detracts from what UNH was able to accomplish in the early days of the sport. At least every time the Gophers' streak is discussed, it provides the opportunity to remember those Wildcats, which is a win-win.

Unlike OnMAA, I don't see it as Minnesota still chasing some mark. It already owns the NCAA records for consecutive wins, consecutive road wins, and consecutive home wins, and if the Gophers lose out of the gate at Colgate, they will remain atop the NCAA record book until somebody comes along and puts together a longer string.

Note that this is a myth. There are no asterisks on the official MLB records, whether for PEDs or for season length.
