What next USCHO to ask all UND posters with Sioux in it to change their username?

Re: What next USCHO to ask all UND posters with Sioux in it to change their username?

Funny part of the name change, the "Sioux" nickname will now be more popular than ever, and my guess is that you'll see even more of it at sporting events. Not to mention all the third-party bootleggers will now receive 100% of the profits from merchandise that bears the name and logo. The only ones that lost in this deal is the University along with its students, staff and fans.

The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe would disagree.

You tell 'em faninseattle. :D

Dam straights Goal! :p

According to wiki EMU decided to switch after a Michigan Department of Civil Rights report suggested that schools drop Native American logos and nicknames because they promote stereotypes.
The thing that shows the moronic thought behind this is half the cities & towns, streets, ect in Michigan alone have indian names not to mention the other states. Do they propose to change them all as not to offend?

Happened with the word "squaw" in many states. Lakes' names and such were changed.

the irony of it all. Florida State Seminoles. Central Michigan Chippewas. Washington Redskins. Chicago Blackhawks.

You could always wear this to your next Sioux game:

So you're going to change Pontiac, Saginaw, Manitou, Otsego, Paw Paw and all the other Michigan cities that are too numerous to list? The lake and street names are even more numerous! I think the basic point here is that things and places that have indian names are EVERYWHERE in our society and an ingrained part of American culture. A few with warped ideals in positions of authority can't really change it so they do what damage they can that makes the most impact on the public so they feel good that they "accomplished" something.

Don't get me wrong. As much as I hate the Sioux, I hate the name change even more. Just sayin' that it's happened. It's pathetic.

I don't hate the name change more than the Sioux. But, it is stupid.

Squaw Lake in Minnesota was renamed Woman Lake (SE of Bemidji)*, while the town Squaw Lake (NE of Bemidji) remains Squaw Lake.

*Woman Lake is next to Man Lake, Kid Lake, Baby Lake, Child Lake, Girl Lake, Little Woman Lake and Little Boy Lake. No, I'm not kidding - hey, you come up with 12,000 unique lake names...

Nah, stuff like that gives an area history and culture and boring stuff like that. We need it to be like all of the new housing developments in Northern Virginia, where everything is a combination of (Dominion/Potomoac/Oak/Forest) (Valley/Acres/Green/Hills).

Whatever your thoughts on the Fighting Sioux nickname, you should watch this

Re: What next USCHO to ask all UND posters with Sioux in it to change their username?

There are Native American/First nation names everywhere in the US/Canada. Here in Massachusetts we have a Lake Chaubunagungamaug, a name shortened from Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. If North Dakota asked the Massasoiit Nation for permission the might be able to use that name. Be a bit hard to embroider it on a hockey sweater though.

Considering UND "borrowed" their nickname, from the Irish this comes as no surprise. Next up "Fighting Canucks"? You could continue with the intertwined ND you "borrowed" from Notre Dame, "borrow" the Nuck name (embracing the great UND tradition of bringing in the majority of that roster from Canada) and carry on like its a long held sacred name until someone notices a flaw 30yrs from now.
