What has disappeared since you were a kid

Re: What has disappeared since you were a kid

Long distance carrier commercials. Granted, they've been replaced by cell phone commercials, which are more numerous and worse.

When mix tapes were recorded on actual cassette tapes.

The library being the only source for researching just about anything.

From reading comments on this board for over a decade...I'm certain this has already been said, but:

Kids playing outside from **** near sunup to sundown. That and riding their bikes all over creation. We did it all day every day when possible (I'm nearly 32yo now)...and it seems like a line falls between me and my brother (28). Even him and his friends didn't do the things we did...and it seems no one does it now. They don't know what they're missing. I still remember how much it sucked to wake up in the summer and see it was pouring out.

Ditto. Usually the tornado siren test (at 9pm in my neighborhood) was considered the "last call" for playtime. Otherwise, as long as you told the parents the general vicinity you were going to be in, you were good to go.

Makeshift dirt tracks/laps in a clearing for bike races, kickball at the park, football in a field, whatever. Outside, being active. Heck, even playing "21" at the local bouncyball courts was fun.

Pinball machines.

There's one company left that still makes them, mostly for collectors/enthusiasts. I suspect they're circling the drain, though.

Man, I loved me some T2 and Addam's Family pinball in college. I destroyed T2 quite often. Eight Ball (IIRC) was my favorite old-school pinball machine.

And handheld video games:

Oh yeah, it could be anything. Usually varied by season, of course. My favorite might have been spring when about eight of us would pick eight NCAA teams and play the bracket down in a series of one-on-one contests in the driveway. My UMass team with Camby and Roe was unstoppable. It still pains me to now know Calipari is a piece of filth.

And how can we forget the time the homemade explosives burned down about four acres? Woops. Never got caught, either. Like it was our fault it was windy that day...
