West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I must agree, I thought the officials during the sconny and vermont game were brutal. I know that Northern Michigan fans will cry foul about the penalties during OT, but I thought they did a good job during regulation and of course OT :)

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

There was no attendance announced at the game that I heard.

If the X holds 18000, then maybe it was 6000. The upper most deck wasn't used at all. 3rd deck was spotty, luxury boxes, too. The lower bowl was maybe half full.

UVM hung in there but too many mistakes - especially penalties at bad times (I.e. Negating power plays - and that series of icings that just stopped them from getting any momentum.

That said, good job by Bucky capitalizing and controlling play. Madore kept UVM in it.

7300 was attendance. Not great but certainly better than Albany (4300) and I'm guessing that'll be better than Ft. Wayne tomorrow.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

With fans coming and going between the two games, I can see 7300...

Still, that wouldn't have filled Mariucci. And I was surprised there weren't more UW students. Only about 50/75 by the band.

Of course, UVM didn't even bother with a mascot, much less the band...

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I usually don't bristle at all at the cost of tickets, but for some reason I thought the price for tickets to the all 3 of the games was a bit steep. That's a surefire way to minimize attendance.

Agreed, I thought 30-35/ticket woulda brought in alot more people, 47 was pretty steep, but i'm sure not complaining after getting to watch us finally break the drought :)

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

This could be one of the stupidest things I've ever read. The referees should NEVER put away their whistles.

are you kidding me so if a player is on a break away to score the game winning goal just hook the crap out of him or pull him down, that wouldn't affect the outcome of the game.

You sir are approaching belobrasil levels of stupidity

Allow me to correct what I said originally. "Blatant" minors only + double minors & majors. Neither of the penalties called tonight in OT should have been called. Period. The game was at such a nice flow 4 on 4 and 5 on 5 that it's a shame to see those terrible penalties called to hand SCSU the game. I'm not saying I didn't want to see SCSU to win, the more WCHA teams the merrier. But I can understand why a NMU fan would be upset.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

had 2 end on a pp. Tough loss for NMU. 5-5 loved the action just wished the refs would have kept the whistles away

What are you talking about? They put the whistles away with 5 minutes left in the 3rd period and then only called the two on NMU when there was nearly blood on the ice! Kyle even said the penalties were legit calls and the NMU players in the postgame interview mentioned that the officials put the whistles away late in the game.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Yup...Huskies won the Friday games, Badgers won the Saturday games.....

BTW...what day is tomorrow????

I prefer to think of it as the Huskies won game 1's of the series, Badgers won game 2's. Saturday is game 1 of the Huskies/Badgers series this weekend. :p

K i was a little inebriated for the game but as i remember the last penalty; scsu had a 3 on 2 and a nmu player grabbed the 3rd scsu player by the shoulder and pulled him down from behind... what about that isnt a penalty

Apparently they didn't have to clean any blood off of the ice.

What you and the ref may not have seen was (Lasch?) reaching behind him and helping the NMU player on top of him. I thought they both should have gone. First one looked legit from where I was though...

waterlover, no it definitely didn't happen...

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I'm still struggling to accept the fact that St. Cloud didn't lose.

Are we dead? Did I somehow miss out on the Apocalypse? What's going on here?

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Given how poor the attendance is, we may as well go back to campus sites with two game total goals series. I'm guessing that total attendance yesterday was somewhere around 12,000 for the two west region games combined. The Albany regional had around 8,000 combined.

A two game first round series at UND would draw 20,000-24,000 while a series at UW would draw 25,000-27,000. That's roughly 50k total tickets sold. I'm going to guess that the first round games of all the regionals will be less than that.

Of course, this begs the following questions:
- do we want first (and possibly second) round matchups to be two game total goal series at the high seed?
- do we value atmosphere more or less than the odds of upsets?
- how important is revenue to the tournament?

I enjoy seeing upsets and believe that's part of the draw of the tournament. However, it's troubling to see regionals played in half (or more) empty arenas in generally dead atmospheres.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

On the SCSU-NMU penalties, as a massively conflicted observer (I was cheering for both teams at different points of the game and was just befuddled in OT)...both OT penalties on NMU were legit. But I felt that the refs let about a half dozen other equally legit penalties go, some each way, including a game saving tackle of an NMU player who was about to tap in the game winner to an empty net past a down and out Lee. Still, I sort of assume they swallowed the whistle on most of those that they let go because they were as blatant but not quite as game-shattering, and just blew the one call. That game could have ended 20 times in OT and the refs aren't the first place I'd look, although it's probably cathartic.

I've been saying for a while now that they should have all the #1 seeds host the regional. It would boost attendance and gives #1 seeds a natural advantage that they deserve after playing their way to a top 4 season finish after 5 months. If a #1 seed's home arena seats less than 4,500 than have it at the nearest possible place that's suitable. I'm totally opposed to a total goal series. It was a dumb & controversial way to determine a winner back then and would be the same today.

I agree they were put away towards the end of regulation, but why did they take them back out in OT? Blood???? Are you ***** kidding me? I saw a couple plays where SCSU got away with robbery compared to the 2 penalties they actually called. If you have to call one then call one, but you better make **** sure you call the same thing when it happens on the other end of the rink.
