West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Congratulations to Wisconsin and St. Cloud. Congrats also to NM and UVM, you played great.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I'm still struggling to accept the fact that St. Cloud didn't lose.

Are we dead? Did I somehow miss out on the Apocalypse? What's going on here?

Wisconsin played well, very much a solid team all the way down the bench.

Ref's were horrible, but that is too be expected.

I don't miss the little turd.... ok well I guess a little, he was entertaining.

Although seriously, how he is still in the green is beyond me:confused: . I know I gave him some gray lol. :D

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

It must be true. The newspaper says SCSU won their first NCAA game last night! :D I was afraid I dreamt driving over to St. Paul and watching them win in OT.

I know we have our work cut out for us tonight. Hopefully we can play a strong game against Wisconsin.

Oh Happy Days! Beat Bucky!

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Congrats Wisconsin. Good luck the rest of the way unless you are playing a HE team.....well if it is BC it will be a tough call on who to route for.....

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Of course, UVM didn't even bother with a mascot, much less the band...

On the radio I heard what I assume was the Vermont Fight Song when they scored. Who played that? The UW band? Was it recorded?

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

Given how poor the attendance is, we may as well go back to campus sites with two game total goals series. I'm guessing that total attendance yesterday was somewhere around 12,000 for the two west region games combined. The Albany regional had around 8,000 combined.

A two game first round series at UND would draw 20,000-24,000 while a series at UW would draw 25,000-27,000. That's roughly 50k total tickets sold. I'm going to guess that the first round games of all the regionals will be less than that.

Of course, this begs the following questions:
- do we want first (and possibly second) round matchups to be two game total goal series at the high seed?
- do we value atmosphere more or less than the odds of upsets?
- how important is revenue to the tournament?

I enjoy seeing upsets and believe that's part of the draw of the tournament. However, it's troubling to see regionals played in half (or more) empty arenas in generally dead atmospheres.

I agree. The regional attendance just ain't makin' it.

Re: West Regional: #1 Wisconsin vs. #4 Vermont, #2 St. Cloud vs. #3 Northern Michigan

I've been saying for a while now that they should have all the #1 seeds host the regional. It would boost attendance and gives #1 seeds a natural advantage that they deserve after playing their way to a top 4 season finish after 5 months. If a #1 seed's home arena seats less than 4,500 than have it at the nearest possible place that's suitable. I'm totally opposed to a total goal series. It was a dumb & controversial way to determine a winner back then and would be the same today.

And how do you plan for that far enough in advance to make sure those dates are clear? Arenas book dates often over a year in advance. You cant just call up a venue six days ahead and book an event.

Not sure I understand the question. It used to be done. Every year. These games would be played in the same arenas as the teams play their regular season, so they could be left available for a post season weekend.

It was easier, at least in Madison back in the day to do something like that, because Hockey and Bball were at different venues in Madison...now, with both calling the Kohl Center home (along with boys and girls state HS Bball tourneys), it might prove a difficult task...

I think it would be harder in Madison than it would be in most places, where they have a dedicated hockey arena (I'm still ****ed about moving to the Kohl Center, but that's another story). If the higher seeded team can't host the game, and can't make other accomodations (like moving it to the another building) it goes to the lower seeded team's venue.

Piped in music. Which unfortunately would've been the better option for St. Cloud as well. Sorry Huskies band but you need to listen to Wisconsin (or even NMU's) band. The star spangled banner tune was nearly unrecognizable. :o :(

Wow. You can't even say ****.

I was embarrassed by the Star Spangled Banner. You could only tell what the song was every now and then. It's like they tried to change the song and add notes or something. I hate it when people try to change it when they sing it too.

The song is good enough without trying to change it somehow.

Senior forward Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) scored the game-winning power-play goal with 44 seconds remaining in the second period as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team defeated Vermont 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey West Regional at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday night.

The top-seeded Badgers (26-10-4) advance to face No. 2-seed St. Cloud State in Saturday’s West Regional final with a trip to the 2010 Frozen Four on the line. Wisconsin continues its pursuit of a seventh NCAA championship and looks to make its first Frozen Four appearance since winning the NCAA title in 2006.
The officiating was pretty iffy in that game. That goal where Gudmanson got pushed into the goal was a BS call, the 2nd goal by UV was an iffy call too. It looked like Gudmanson iced it and then a few seconds later the puck went in.
Not to mention a few of the PPs that UV got were on some pretty questionable calls. There was another instance where Gudmanson iced the puck and one of the UV players based him in the face with their stick and there was no call.
The Badgers looked pretty flat in the 1st period, but it was nice to seem them get it together and take care of business in the 2nd and 3rd.
They got the win though and thats all that matters. Hopefully the Badgers can play well against St Cloud and stay out of the penalty box. If they can, I think they win this game.
SCSU is a good team, but without a little luck and a poor performance from the Badgers I dont think they win this game.
