WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

That's my Bold Prediction series for the week and the only discrepancy between D2D's picks and mine.

Beavers Sweep at Sanford!

As fate would have it we are going to be nearby this weekend and I believe we are going to the game on Friday. I'll report back. It will be interesting to see if BSU plays as hard against UND and if the green slime plays as cheap against Bemidji.

Beavers Sweep at Sanford!

Both the mens and womens teams are playing UND on Friday night, so I would take a Beaver sweep at Sanford!

And all will play at the Ralph on Saturday.

Re: WCHA Thread V

From Bemidji, UND and BSU tie at 0-0, UND wins the shootout.
Same two teams tomorrow in Grand Forks.

BSU loses in a sh%tout 1-0. The Beavers started slow, couldn't clear the zone & ran around for at least the first 6-7 minutes of the 1st. Only the ?'s inability to hang on to the puck, actually pass or shoot a lick kept them from burying BSU early. After that the Beavers picked it up and had some decent shots. The second period was up and down but not exactly exciting. The Beavers did their usual good job of blocking shots but the only real threat was a couple of break-a-ways by the ? but in both cases the BSU D caught up with them & prevented even a shot. Neither goalie was really tested until the sh^tout. The first half of of the third was just like the second period. But at the 11 minute mark both teams decided to play hockey and it was actually pretty good. A lot of blocked shots again and the ?'s had two more break-a-ways chased down & scuttled. Either the Beavers D is fast or the ? forwards need some treadmill time. The OT was pretty much all ? with the Beavers blocking shots left and right but there were not a lot of chances either way.

The first ? shooter scored and the first 2 Beavers looked disinterested, the 3rd shooter beat the goalie & rang one off the pipe.

I had picked BSU to finish ahead of the ?. They did not show me anything to make me think I got that right, the ? slightly better but neither are going to be a real threat unless they get a lot better or are saving it all up for Us, W and M. Better luck in NoDak tomorrow night.

And a hat tip to the front runner to replace Miller. Some coach was barking at the refs all afternoon. He was wrong often enough that it was I can't imagine they paid any attention to him. The refs apparently left their whistles at the Keg-n-Cork. Not any really ugly stuff but a lot of low-level crap they let go.

Final Score From Friday, October 16th
Minnesota 7
Ohio State 2

Twenty-Somethings Rule
#21; #22; #26. Sounds like a group of 4th line grinders with anonymous jersey numbers, right? Hardly. The Cameranesi/Brandt/Potomak Line was really something tonight. Let's describe them as quite talented, extremely hardworking and highly effective. Don't know if they'll be together for the long haul, but the Gopher Coaches might want to consider it. Of course the Gophers have a deep roster, filled with stars. But tonight it was the Twenty-Something Line that blew the game open and stole the show.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Hannah Brandt, Minnesota
Hannah generally lives up to her sterling reputation. But tonight she outdid herself in the face-off circle, winning 18 of 20 draws. Crazy good.

#3 Star: (tie) Cara Zubko, Ohio State; and Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
The 2015-16 Gophers appear to be well positioned to make another run at a national title. But be that as it may, OSU never quit. That's something to be proud of; something to build on. Cara scored with 11.2 seconds left in the 1st period; Claudia scored with 1.3 seconds left in the 3rd. Playing for the full 60 minutes will pay dividends in both the short and long run.

#2 Star: Sarah Potomak, Minnesota
Sarah's compete level was amazing tonight; she was all over the ice making plays and creating opportunities. Not necessarily what Buckeye fans wanted to see. But as a fan of the sport, I have to admit it's kind of nice to see all that effort get rewarded. In this case, the reward was 4 assists. Potomak was +4 for the night, which led all players.

#1 Star: Dani Cameranesi, Minnesota
Dani scored consecutive goals late in the 2nd Period. By doing so she broke open what had been a competitive game, and effectively settled the matter. Add in her two assists, and Cameranesi also had a four point night. As the only player with a multiple goal game, we'll give Dani top honors.

Next Up: The Saturday Afternoon Rematch. Face-Off at 2:07 PM EST. Be prepared for Football-Priced Parking -- or a very long walk.:(

Re: WCHA Thread V

Brittni Mowat leads the nation in save percentage. Early in the year obvi, but she's got a heck of a run going.

Well, she was a 1st Team All-American last year, so it isn't too shocking.

Re: WCHA Thread V

ne7minder's friend doing color today. ;)

pokie? Norwood? Woog? we were out biking in the woods and only heard tiny bits of the game when phone was in range so I don't know who. Honestly, I have a ton of "friends" above is just the first 3 to come to mind.

edited because of someone with a simple mind intentionally trying to misrepresent a piece.

She had to be 1000% better than the guy doing the color on the Collegesportslive stream. He was able to explain how adept the Gophers were at "ball control".

:D Ball control...that's funny. The crew in Grand Forks is always good in my opinion. Actual hockey people.

I agree, with one exception. I was listening to the audio-only stream from UND both days, which is different personnel than is used for the TV. They didn't totally understand the differences between how points are awarded for OT and shootouts in the NHL versus the NCAA, so they were advocating for a 3-on-3 OT. Their point was that it was better to have a game decided that way than a shootout. That's true, but the way the women's WCHA does it, the shootout doesn't decide anything of NCAA importance, so I can live with it being a flawed way to decide anything, whereas if they went to a 3-on-3 OT, that would be binding in the eyes of the NCAA. Thus, no thanks on 3-on-3 OT as far as I'm concerned. Beyond that, they call a very good game.

Re: WCHA Thread V

A battle of two evenly matched teams should result in a very interesting series, one with significant implications for each team. I see a split as the most likely outcome. Over/Under for total goals scored in each game is something like 2.5.
Even more defensive than I guessed it would be. Excluding shootout tallies, the "Over/Under total goals scored" was 0 in the first game and 3.0 in the rematch, for an average of 1.5 in the two games.

Still, you set a good line with one "under" and one "over". :)
