WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

I'd also like to point out with regard to the "none of the good teams want to play each other during the regular season" stuff, Wisconsin played defending champs Clarkson last year, during the 2014-2015 season.

True but they didn't know they would be doing tht when they scheduled them. To some extent it is guess work since the games are scheduled 2-3 years before they are played.

Re: WCHA Thread V

I get the point of the article and there is no doubt it's tough getting a 3rd team to the NCAAs. However, it seemed like all Bemidji had to do was beat UMD (at home, best of 3) and advance to Final Face-off and couldn't get it done. Also, North Dakota lost/tied several head-scratchers throughout the year to negate their 2-4-2 record against Wisconsin/Minnesota.

UND AT HOME included losses to BSU (twice), SCSU, UMD and OSU, a tie with Mankato, and a loss to Syracuse away. Until they figure out how to beat anyone other than UM or UW they are not going to get asked to the dance. BSU got tied by Robert Morris and then the series to UMD went badly South. They might deserve consideration, their record was equal to Princeton. Its possible the NC$$ would have calculated the cost of a bus ride to Minneapolis & made the decision that strength of schedule favored BSU in the same way they did with NU. It would be great if 5-12 could have best of 3s but there is no money for that so you just have to win a lot more.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Well with the season almost over and having read a lot of the forums post here's my take: Tony the Tiger and Pgb-Ohio are the only two I'd consistently listen to. Thanks for sticking around. The NCAA tournament is a joke for women's hockey. No wonder most players care only about their national team. Officials were slightly better this year. The WCHA is also a joke. Players of the week and all team awards are SO predictable with zero effort in looking at the whole picture of a player, the team they are on and it's overall record. It's about how many goals or points they have period. I hope the sport can grow and change the way that the WCHA and NCAA manage it. For the love of the sport.

I look forward to seeing your posts for the very same "predictable" reason although you must be getting soft as you didn't mention that this is all Minnesota's fault. ;)

So you are looking for participation medals, not keeping score, calling penalties and offsides by the honor system, all players playing the same amount of time on the ice and their gpa's being on the scoreboard. Not to drag politics into this, but I bet I know who you are voting for.....and yeah if TTT is your reference point for objectivity......*head explodes*.....T3 has gotten better over the years, but Pgb-Ohio is in a class of one for thoughtfulness.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Rumors from Wisconsin-
1-New men's hockey coach supposed to be announced next Thurs or Fri
2-99% likely to be UW alum

Some Wisco hockey guys are speculating that means Mark Osiecki, Don Granato, or Mark Johnson (Chris Chelios).

I believe ARM is on record as saying current asst coach Dan Koch would take over if MJ left, I don't recall him expressing an opinion on how good a job he would do. Some of the above mentioned Wisco hockey guys think Koch would do very well.

I would feel bad for a while if it was Mark Johnson.

As a general rule, the best way to avoid dragging politics into an entirely unrelated conversation is to simply avoid dragging politics into it.

That would not be any fun. :)

I hope MJ stays as I have stated in other threads. I think it's better for the program to bring in a guy who has current feel for the recruiting landscape. That is the most important factor.

Koch could be great ala Frosty, he could suck too. The next 2 years for UW MJ has a full roster of players signed up, and for 18-19 there's only 3 spots open, so as long as Koch is good at x's and o's and motivation, he can ride MJ's recruits for basically 3 years if MJ leaves.

Someone like Koch factors heavily into recruiting. He was at UW, he went to Shattuck for a couple of years, and he came back. One of the years where he was gone coincided with Johnson being away for the Olympics, but I thought there was a blip in recruiting where the Badgers' talent level dropped. During Brianna Decker's senior season, it was striking how little top-end talent she had surrounding her. Granted, that was a two-concussion season, but still. Johnson and Koch were back by then, but there is a lag from the time that recruiting effectiveness dips to when it shows up on the ice.

I doubt that Koch would suck. Would Johnson have brought him back if he thought he didn't have the makings of a very good to great head coach someday? I'm convinced that Joel Johnson at Minnesota would do a great job running a program. The only thing that stops me from putting Koch on the same level is that I don't know Koch as well.

If I was a fan of UW, I'd rather face the start of a post Mark Johnson era with Dan Koch rather than without him, and associate head coaches usually don't stick around if they don't get the top spot when the HC leaves.

Re: WCHA Thread V

That's debatable! That's a whole lotta ugly. Need's ALOT more cardinal and white, but to the victors go the spoils, though technically UW does own the wcha. :)

I think the cardinal and white would trade WCHA banners for the Gopher's National Championship banner. Next year Gophers fans could very well be saying the same "That's a whole lotta ugly." "Needs ALOT more maroon and gold."

I say DOWN WITH SHOOTOUTS! That way both schools would have had two banners to hang this fall. The league title really did deserve to be a tie. How much closer could two teams get? :)

if this year should have taught people anything, it is to not count the Gophers out, until they are actually out

too early to talk about next year, at least another month to enjoy this year IMO

however, I will say there is reason for much optimism for next year, after all, like #8, we have a player waiting in the wings that is on few opposing fans radar who IMO will have a big impact next year

shhhh! do not discuss, for another month, let them wonder

Sorry, I can't help but ask. Does her last name sound a little like the opening lyrics (slightly edited) for Laverne and Shirley?

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight
schlemiel, Schammel, hasenpfeffer incorporated,
We're gonna do it...

I don't think anyone but maybe a few rodent fans counted the rodents out. I sure did not.

Player to be named later.....so Kessel gets yet another year of eligibility?! It's Potomak's little sis, isn't it? I don't care who the stinkin rodents bring in. BRING IT! You have to beat the best to be the best.
