WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

kinda weird, no offensive player of the year
and the defensive POY only makes 3rd team all-WCHA
not to mention the fact that Desbiens was POY, but apparently not good enough for defensive POY
all those passes she made during the year must have made everyone consider her an offensive player :o

Re: WCHA Thread V

The WCHA has wound up with a screwy list before. In 2010, Felicia Nelson and Zuzana Tomcikova were co-PotY winners, and both were on the 2nd team. The coaches apparently like to spread the wealth around.

I agree, it makes no sense on all these fronts.

I guess ARD's 2 assists outweigh all the scoring the rodent duo did.

Re: WCHA Thread V

The first game today was a dud, unless you wear red. UMD was virtually lifeless for most of the game; only for the last eight minutes of the first period and the last five of the third were they even vaguely threatening. Some of that is on Wisconsin, but the Bulldogs got muscled off the puck with ease and didn't have the speed to cope with Wisconsin. Duluth looked like a team that had spent itself emotionally beating Bemidji last week.

Annie Pankowski is just flat out a dirty player. The elbow she delivered to the head of a Bulldog with 2:34 left in the game was another instance of a penalty that needed to be five minutes and a game misconduct, minimum. The refs need to start sending her to the dressing room over these antics before she hurts someone badly. If nothing else, it's on Mark Johnson's head to rein her in.

The second game was closer, but not really as close as the 2-0 score would indicate. North Dakota generated very few decent scoring chances. They're able to get the puck into the zone and maintain possession at times, but they don't have a clear idea about how to move the puck in the direction of the net. They mounted 1:43 of one of the worst 5-on-3 power plays I've ever seen, that at one point featured the two defensemen on the blue line just passing the puck back and forth for about 15 seconds. Amsley-Benzie made a couple of outstanding saves to keep the game close.

Two shutouts in which neither winning goalie was tested much.

Sounds about right.

Can't recall who the UMD player was who had a fairly clear shot on net in the last half of the 3rd but "shot" the puck like an Atom BB player. Pushing the puck would be a more accurate description. Terribly embarrassing to watch. I've mentioned this many times before. If UMD screened their potential recruits for the ability to shoot the puck with authority and then culled the list accordingly the odds of greater success in the standings would bend substantially in their favour.

Anemic offense just like the last few seasons. Not enough difference making players. The passing looked pretty crisp at times though.

And can't speak to Pankowski's behaviour other than the "elbow" you mentioned. Looked more like an elbow/forearm that she used to push Stalder past the net as opposed to making impact with her elbow. Looked pretty tame to me.

From where I was sitting, she had the elbow up and hit the UMD player right in the head. I couldn't tell whether it was the elbow or the forearm, but either way, it looked like a textbook Contact to the Head penalty.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Copying from the Badger thread...

Thanks for that. I had been on this site but don't know if I just couldn't see for looking or the link wasn't available yet.

Got access to the semi final games but unfortunately this year the WCHA is not making the final game available online outside the US.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Final Post For The 2015-16 Season
Play in the Women's WCHA is complete for 2015-16. Congratulations to Regular Season & Conference Tournament Champion Wisconsin. Congratulations to NCAA At-Large Selection Minnesota. Best of luck to both teams in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

As promised, this year's 3 Stars Series comes with a Bonus Post. Here you go. No visiting team at the OSU Ice Rink this time. In fact, no game at all. Just a retrospective look at the Buckeye season; a compilation meant to salute the Graduating Seniors.

Seven Super Novas: The Ohio State Class of 2016
Seven members strong, the Senior Class shined brightly all year long. But unlike their galactic counterparts, these women aren't burning out. They've literally just begun. The only thing nearing completion is their time at Ohio State. Yes, of course, they'll be greatly missed here in Columbus. But for each, the future is bright indeed.

During the course of the season, each of the seven earned recognition in my 3 Stars posts. That wasn't planned or guaranteed. OK, I do make a conscious effort to spread the wealth. But there were no charity stars awarded. All recognition was well earned.

Allow me a trip through memory lane; I'll share some memories for each of the seven. This particular year there were 16 Home Games. Made 'em all! Didn't travel this year, which is becoming all too normal. As a result, 100% of the memories are from OSU Home Games. As per team tradition, the players are listed in numerical order.

#2 Cara Zubko
Cara finished the season as one of the Buckeyes' core four Defenders. Injuries reduced the Buckeye 'D' Corps down to the bare minimum. But rather than wearing down, they seemed to thrive on the extra ice time. Along with other 'D', that perseverance gave Cara a place on my Senior Night list. Back at the beginning of the year, she scored a goal against Minnesota with 11.2 seconds left in the first period. That's Zubko; she never quits. Between those bookends, Cara had a nice series against St. Cloud in January. Scoring was tough to come by that weekend. But both Buckeye scoring plays began with Zubko slapshots from the point. Among other things, that heavy shot will be missed. Hey Saskatchewan: Send more like Cara.

#9 Bryanna Neuwald
Bryanna didn't show up on the score sheet a whole lot, but she always brought great energy to the rink. She finally received the recognition she deserves for the January 15th game against St. Cloud. Her hustle that night was crazy good. Despite standing only 5'4" (is that in skates?) she was an irresistible force. Regrettably her season was ended by a shoulder injury -- her second, IIRC. But she still played in 20 games and certainly made her presence felt. Thanks to Oakville, Ontario for sharing Bryanna with us.

#14 Maggie Rothgery
It's always a treat to have an Ohio native on the Buckeye roster. Maggie came to us from Elyria. (Lorain County, West of Cleveland) Her college journey started at Mercyhurst, before she landed in Columbus. Back on December 12th, Rothgery was part of a spectacular goal against UMD. Her crisp breakout pass sprung Maddy Field on a breakaway, thus earning her the primary assist. On January 16th against St. Cloud, her hustle was impossible to ignore; her diligent forechecking also earned her an assist that night.

#16 Melani Moylan
A tenacious player in both the corners and the slot, Melani became something of a tip-in specialist over the course of the season. Moylan earned mentions from me for nifty tip-in goals againt both UMD and St. Cloud. The tireless forechecker came to Ohio State from Mississauga, Ontario; and we're glad she did.

#17 Julia McKinnon
A fierce competitor, Julia can get under the skin of opposing players. At the same time her work ethic is beyond question. She's also an unselfish teammate; I can't forget Julia's decision to give up a sure empty-netter against UND; instead sharing the puck with Claudia Kepler. The story of Julia's Senior season includes an extended stay on 'D' during the Fall games. Ultimately she returned to her true home at forward. But her willingness to be part of solution on defense speaks well. McKinnon earned a mention for her defensive work back on November 6th against Bemidji. Of course Julia did a good bit of scoring over the course of her career. One of my favorite McKinnon goals came against St. Cloud, when she pounded home a rebound off a Zubko slapshot from the point. Julia's journey to Columbus began in Kelowna, BC, with a stop at the Ontario Hockey Academy.

#26 Kendall Curtis
Those ginger locks flying down the Ice Rink are certainly going to be missed. But if anything, Kendall's leadership and intelligence will be missed even more. From Highlands Ranch, Colorado, it was always a Rocky Mountain High watching Curtis play. Can't forget that goal against Bemidji, when she really should have had both the goal and the second assist! The play began with a Curtis face-off win, directing the puck to Julianna Iafallo. After the return pass from Julianna, Kendall scored with style, nailing the upper left-hand corner. True beauty.

#39 Stacy Danczak
Another Ohio native. (Macedonia, Summit County, Cleveland/Akron Area) Stacy spent most of the season as the back-up goalie, logging time in 11 games. Perhaps the highlight of Stacy's season came against Conference Champ Wisconsin back on February 5th. Danczak was sensational, stopping 26 Badger shots and falling just short of stealing the win. I gave Stacy an Honorable Mention. Stingy me. Puckdrop14 posted his opinion that Danczak was the #1 Star of the Game! I will certainly concede that the quality of the work was there.

Wrapping Up
Long post, and yet I've only scratched the surface. Sincere thanks to all seven of you for the memories and inspiration. Never forget -- you'll always be Buckeyes!

Re: WCHA Thread V

Thank you, Pgb-ohio, for yet another wonderful tribute to our seniors. Would you mind if I shared that on The Scarlet Liners fb page? Or maybe you could share it if you are on there.

You're welcome; glad you enjoyed it.

Sure, feel free to share it with the Scarlet Liners. With proper attribution, of course.;) Actually, the only thing I really ask is that you encourage the SL members to give USCHO a try. You know, if you like this tribute, check out USCHO next Fall; that kind of thing.

Last but not least, I've never had a facebook account. It's becoming increasingly clear to me that I need to fix that, and probably will do so in the months ahead. But for now you'll need to be one to take care of the sharing.

Re: WCHA Thread V

I am not a fan of the Buckeyes though I am thrilled to see the improvement in style this year & hope them more success in the future (just not more than my team ;) ). That said I really appreciate the job you do in covering your team. Not just well written but very even handed. You deserve a lot of kudos for the work you do. Thank you

I couldn't agree more. Both PGB and Osualum86 are what sportsmanship is all about. I read their posts with interest knowing that their comments will be fair and unbiased (for the most part). Keep it up and all teams deserve the kind of support you provide the Buckeyes. I Enjoy the rest of the season and let's keep the National Championship in the WCHA.

Thank you for the kind words Puckdrop14! I used to be very much into my teams and the players who played on my teams. What really changed for me was in the mid-1990's I was an assistant coach for an AAU girls basketball team. I coached not only kids from my alma mater, but kids from other high schools who had success, and in some cases, beat my alma mater. It was then that I realized at the end of the day, they are all kids who are playing a game and trying to get better. Today, I root for the Buckeyes, but I also respect and appreciate the great efforts of our opponents, and I try to be fairly unbiased here. I definitely agree with you on keeping the NCAA Title in the WCHA!

You're welcome, and thank you for posting that. One of the main reasons I post my 3 Stars on the League thread is to reach out to fans of the other 7 programs. To hear that it's connecting means a lot.

Speaking for myself, I certainly have my biases and rooting interests. But my feeling is that as long as positive biases are acknowledged, and negative biases mostly suppressed, fairness can be accomplished.

Keep it up and all teams deserve the kind of support you provide the Buckeyes. Enjoy the rest of the season and let's keep the National Championship in the WCHA.
Best of luck to both the Gophers and the Badgers. Go WCHA! Admittedly that comment is the product of a bias.;)

I don't see anything on the horizon that will lead to a change.

WCHA women getting squeezed out of NCAA tournament
http://www.twincities.com/2016/03/11/wcha-women-getting-squeezed-out-of-ncaa-tournament/

I get the point of the article and there is no doubt it's tough getting a 3rd team to the NCAAs. However, it seemed like all Bemidji had to do was beat UMD (at home, best of 3) and advance to Final Face-off and couldn't get it done. Also, North Dakota lost/tied several head-scratchers throughout the year to negate their 2-4-2 record against Wisconsin/Minnesota.

I'd also like to point out with regard to the "none of the good teams want to play each other during the regular season" stuff, Wisconsin played defending champs Clarkson last year, during the 2014-2015 season.

Even if Bemidji had won that series, they wouldn't have made the NCAA tournament. Anything short of winning the WCHA playoffs and they would have failed to jump past Princeton and Northeastern.
