Re: WCHA Thread IV

North Dakota @ Bemidji State The Whioux take two

Wisconsin @ Ohio State Going with a SPLIT in this one

Minnesota-Duluth @ St. Cloud State The DAWGS prevail (how can I be wrong?)

Minnesota State @ Minnesota Gophers keep it rolling!

Re: WCHA Thread IV

That's for sure, Mr. 86! Our Gophers are obviously doing great, but your Buckeyes are exceeding expectations as well!

Best of luck to your team the rest of the way....

Thanks D2D! Good luck to you, too, except when you come to Columbus (LOL)! ;)

Then again, I don't think your team will need much luck to win games this seasons with that group! Minnesota is easily the best team we've played all year. Your team really is at another level at this point in the season.

As for our series vs Wisconsin this week, I hope we can take two, but Wisconsin is playing better now than they were earlier this season. It will be interesting to see how we do against them. We did win one of our games with them last season, so we've shown we can play with them.

Ok, I was checking the polls. This might be a dumb question, but can someone explain to me why Minnesota is #1 in every poll, but does not even appear in the PairWise?!? Is someone asleep at the wheel there at the PairWise office?!? Feel free to enlighten me on this one! I mean, my Buckeyes are 6th in the latest PairWise and Minnesota beat us pretty good in Minneapolis last month. Doesn't make sense to me. Has to be a mistake, right?

Hadn't even looked yet this season until you mentioned it. Like Eeyore posted...I think there's a bug in that USCHO page.

...either that or they've discreetly plugged another East favoring component into the formula. ;)

Brooky, that component usually appears about mid-February.

Definitely a bug somewhere, whether it's the USCHO page or the PairWise rankings! :)

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Friday, November 16th
Wisconsin 4
Ohio State 2

Up a Player, Down a Goal
The story of Friday's matinee is discouragingly simple: The Buckeyes gave up goals when they had the manpower advantage. So I'm going to keep this edition of the 3 Stars short and bittersweet.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Julia McKinnon
The Buckeye Power Play wasn't all bad; it did net the first Buckeye goal. With the Schmitt Sisters controlling the point, Kari launched a hard drive toward the net. Camped in the slot, Julia courageously steered the puck into the net.

Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Madison Packer
Madison's long range empty netter sealed the deal. Skater ratio: 5x6. OK, one quick deviation from the story line is a must: Madison Packer may just be the ultimate Wisconsin sports name!

#3 Star: Blayre Turnbull, Wisconsin
Blayre had the GWG. Skater ratio: 4x5

#2 Star: Karley Sylvester, Wisconsin
Karley bagged her Penalty Shot, earned while the Badger's were playing 4x5. The shot itself was a beauty. Carrying the puck on her forehand, the left-handed Sylvester pulled the puck across to her backhand and nailed the upper right corner of the net.

#1 Star: Alev Kelter, Wisconsin
Although it came early on in the 2nd Period, Alev's goal foreshadowed all that was to come. On the PK, Kelter blocked a Buckeye shot from the left point, then carried the puck the length of the ice. Going in alone on the Buckeye goal, the right-handed Kelter smartly deposited the puck in the lower right hand corner hand corner of the net -- just above the goalie's stick. Alev's opportunistic counter-attack perfectly symbolizes this game.

Up Next: Rematch with Wisconsin. Buckeyes: Take care of business with the man advantage and we'll be just fine! See you at the Schott at 2:07.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Saturday, November 17th
Ohio State 3
Wisconsin 1

Focused Effort Nets Win, Series Split
On Friday, the Buckeyes may have been just slightly tentative. The return to the Schottenstein Center was, after all, a special occasion. There was no such issue Saturday. A determined group of Buckeyes largely controlled the action en route to a solid 3-1 win. When a player of Brianna Decker's caliber goes home with a -2, you know you've done something right. Team defense, by the forwards and 'D' alike, deserves a ton of credit for knocking the Badger stars off their collective game.

When the weekend concluded, the aggregate score was 5-5. In the end, this may actually matter. The regular season race for home ice slots could wind up requiring a tiebreaker. Coaches of the contenders may want to think twice before risking empty net goals. The teams really looked that close.

Perhaps more importantly, the Buckeyes proved they belong in the same elite category as the Badgers. The Badgers remain smart, athletic and talented. But they won the Friday game strictly on the counter-attack, and were outplayed on Saturday. This was not a case of a Buckeye team trying to pull upsets. It was a fine battle of equals.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Alev Kelter
Late in the 3rd Period, Alev's 6x4 goal spoiled the shutout. Kelter was one of the more productive Badgers all weekend long, and the only player on either team to make my list for both games. On Saturday she launched four strong shots, including the power play marker.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Ally Tarr
Though rewarded with only one assist on the day, Ally was a full partner on the first two Buckeye goals. Read on...

#3 Star: Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State
Taylor is making a habit of scoring in bunches, and Buckeye Nation is definitely pleased. Working down low on the power play, Kuehl drove to the net along the endline. She put a dangerous shot on goal, carefully calibrated to coincide with Ally Tarr's arrival at the opposite post. Ally arrived right on time, ready to bury either a goal mouth pass or a rebound. Badger Goalie Alex Rigsby would have been less than human if she wasn't a bit distracted. As it happened, the puck leaked into the net before Tarr could get a stick on it. But no doubt Taylor would be the first to give Ally credit on the play.

On the second goal, Tarr's strong wraparound bid remained in the crease, but Kuehl was in perfect position to finish the job. Again, the effective Kuehl/Tarr combo paid dividends.

#2 Star: (tie)Kari Schmitt, Ohio State and Sara Schmitt, Ohio State
Watching the Schmitt Sisters play defense is pleasantly addictive. There may or may not be an actual chemical reaction in the brain, but they certainly give the Buckeye Fan a sense of well being.:)

The Schmitts shine on offense as well; Kari had a pair of assists, and was on the ice for all three of the Buckeye goals. Sara might have matched that, except that she was in the box for the 4x4 tally. Nevertheless, she was present and accounted for on the other two goals, and had an assist of her own.

#1 Star: Chelsea Knapp, Ohio State
As the game was winding down, I had Chelsea penciled in for top honors. The 6x4 goal did nothing to dissuade to me; no one was stopping that one. Although an excellent performance by her teammates was clearly a big help, Knapp turned aside many tough Badger shots to preserve the Buckeye lead, and ultimately the victory.

Quite honestly I've been a little stingy with my praise of Chelsea this season. Now with a 10-4 record and .923 save percentage, Knapp has been a great anchor for the team all year long.

After the final whistle on Saturday, Knapp was at the center of the celebration and deservedly so. Keep up the good work, Chelsea!

Up Next: Happy Thanksgiving to All! Then the Road Trip to Princeton.

Coming up after Turkey Day:

Bemidji State @ Minnesota State

St. Cloud State @ Wisconsin

Ohio State @ Princeton

Minnesota @ New Hampshire

Should be a good series in Grand Forks, @ Princeton & New Hampshire as well.

Toughest ones to predict would appear to be the first two.

I'd like to be wrong...but Badgers probably have a good shot at 6 pts. this weekend. Making those pts. up for grabs in GF pretty significant for both combatants. Opportunity for all of UW, UMD and UND to close the gap. Who gets it done?

Bemidji needs to find some spark...maybe get out of the basement if they can do that.

Regardless of the points earned this weekend, all three teams still have the number 4 or higher in the "L" column. So they can "close the gap" all they want -- it just means they'll have played more conference games than the Gophers.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Yup. The time to make a real mid-season assessment is at the end of the day on December 9th. At that point, everyone will have played everyone else twice -- and we break for the holidays.

To the extent that we're mutually concerned about UW & UND, both those teams have relatively difficult schedules between now and the break. For one thing, they play each other. That's a good challenge regardless of which side you're on. Beyond that, UND has a series with UMD and UW gets you guys. Not the easiest way to pad the point total.

That's not quite true, as Wisconsin and Minnesota State have already played each other four times.

I would go with the Home teams for the WCHA series and with the road teams for the NC series. You can elect to ignore the advice of an ECAC fan, with no horse in any of these races. :D

You're absolutely correct; I missed that completely. I also failed to catch that Wisconsin has six games conference games remaining before the break, with the additional opponent being St. Cloud. So it won't be an even comparison after all.

Gotta believe that having a conference series in September is the rare exception to the rule. I'm also guessing that having all four UW/MSU meetings completed by the holidays is quite irregular. Did one of the schools request that a second half series be moved to September? If yes, what was the motivation?

Yeah, it's not really closing the gap, rather than maintaining it. Until somebody actually takes a point from the Gophers, everyone keeps drifting farther away.

Wisconsin "should" get 6 this weekend, but the offense is still Jekyll and Hyde. If they can hold serve this weekend, they'll get their shot at Minnesota to see if there will be any kind of race for the WCHA regular-season title.
