Focused Effort Nets Win, Series Split
On Friday, the Buckeyes may have been just slightly tentative. The return to the Schottenstein Center was, after all, a special occasion. There was no such issue Saturday. A determined group of Buckeyes largely controlled the action en route to a solid 3-1 win. When a player of Brianna Decker's caliber goes home with a -2, you know you've done something right. Team defense, by the forwards and 'D' alike, deserves a ton of credit for knocking the Badger stars off their collective game.
When the weekend concluded, the aggregate score was 5-5. In the end, this may actually matter. The regular season race for home ice slots could wind up requiring a tiebreaker. Coaches of the contenders may want to think twice before risking empty net goals. The teams really looked that close.
Perhaps more importantly, the Buckeyes proved they belong in the same elite category as the Badgers. The Badgers remain smart, athletic and talented. But they won the Friday game strictly on the counter-attack, and were outplayed on Saturday. This was not a case of a Buckeye team trying to pull upsets. It was a fine battle of equals.
Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun
Wisconsin Honorable Mention: Alev Kelter
Late in the 3rd Period, Alev's 6x4 goal spoiled the shutout. Kelter was one of the more productive Badgers all weekend long, and the only player on either team to make my list for both games. On Saturday she launched four strong shots, including the power play marker.
Ohio State Honorable Mention: Ally Tarr
Though rewarded with only one assist on the day, Ally was a full partner on the first two Buckeye goals. Read on...
#3 Star: Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State
Taylor is making a habit of scoring in bunches, and Buckeye Nation is definitely pleased. Working down low on the power play, Kuehl drove to the net along the endline. She put a dangerous shot on goal, carefully calibrated to coincide with
Ally Tarr's arrival at the opposite post. Ally arrived right on time, ready to bury either a goal mouth pass or a rebound. Badger Goalie
Alex Rigsby would have been less than human if she wasn't a bit distracted. As it happened, the puck leaked into the net before Tarr could get a stick on it. But no doubt Taylor would be the first to give Ally credit on the play.
On the second goal, Tarr's strong wraparound bid remained in the crease, but Kuehl was in perfect position to finish the job. Again, the effective Kuehl/Tarr combo paid dividends.
#2 Star: (tie)Kari Schmitt, Ohio State and Sara Schmitt, Ohio State
Watching the Schmitt Sisters play defense is pleasantly addictive. There may or may not be an actual chemical reaction in the brain, but they certainly give the Buckeye Fan a sense of well being.
The Schmitts shine on offense as well; Kari had a pair of assists, and was on the ice for all three of the Buckeye goals. Sara might have matched that, except that she was in the box for the 4x4 tally. Nevertheless, she was present and accounted for on the other two goals, and had an assist of her own.
#1 Star: Chelsea Knapp, Ohio State
As the game was winding down, I had Chelsea penciled in for top honors. The 6x4 goal did nothing to dissuade to me; no one was stopping that one. Although an excellent performance by her teammates was clearly a big help, Knapp turned aside many tough Badger shots to preserve the Buckeye lead, and ultimately the victory.
Quite honestly I've been a little stingy with my praise of Chelsea this season. Now with a 10-4 record and .923 save percentage, Knapp has been a great anchor for the team all year long.
After the final whistle on Saturday, Knapp was at the center of the celebration and deservedly so. Keep up the good work, Chelsea!
