Re: WCHA Thread IV

Minnesota-Duluth @ Ohio State Tough call and I can't decide, so I'm going with a split.

North Dakota @ St. Cloud State The Whioux take Tioux.

Minnesota @ Wisconsin The history of this series says otherwise, but I think the Gophers will ultimately prevail in both. I do, however, look for this series to be the Gophers' toughest of the year.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Minnesota @ Wisconsin

Friday / Sunday...sucks! Time to get the organizational and scheduling logistics $**t together UW.

I more than encourage you to contact the UW administration about this. It has been the bane of scheduling around here for years. Thought it would end with LaBahn, but they don't want to play games there at the same time when Kohl Center is being used. Kind of thought that was one of the main reasons for building it, but what do I know? I'm just a season ticket holder.

Yeah, there aren't enough UW people available to man the 1 concession stand, 1 popcorn stand, 2 in the ticket booth and 3 scanning tickets....why is Saturday aft out? I don't see any other event in the aft.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

OSU, UMD and UND all have 2 games in hand over UW with 10 points presently being the maximum spread in the standings between them (UW and UND).

Things could get quite interesting as we round the clubhouse turn.

Badger men's basketball is playing (interestingly) Minnesota at Kohl Center at 1:00 while men's hockey plays at 8:00.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

In Minneapolis, there'd be no problem with scheduling women's hockey to play at 4:00 or 5:00 in that scenario.

There's no real good reason they couldn't do it here either, except for an unwilling administration. I still can't get over the fact that they dump one of the biggest games on the schedule to a 2:00 Friday. Even though the programs are down, they would never schedule a mid-afternoon weekday game for women's basketball or volleyball.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Friday, January 25th
UMD 7
Ohio State 5

Bulldogs start early, score often, outpace Buckeyes 7-5
Those who see the glass as half full will point to the Power Play stats: UMD 2 for 4; Ohio State 3 for 7. Solid production by both teams. Those who see the glass as half empty will point to the modest save percentages and the high goals against numbers on both sides. Those who see the glass as totally empty will simply point to the Schottenstein Center stands. We threw a hockey party this afternoon and nobody came.

In fairness to the Buckeye Fanbase, the workday timeslot prevented many local fans from attending. The heavy-by-local-standards snow storm deterred most of the rest. The lack of fans in the stands was unfortunate; there were many offensive fireworks to behold.

And yet, despite the prolific scoring, the game was frustrating to watch from a Buckeye point of view. OSU fell behind during the first minute of play, then tied the game at 1. The Bulldogs built a 3-1 lead, but that evaporated as the Buckeyes forged a 3-3 tie. Then it was deja vu all over again; UMD 5, Ohio State 3. The Buckeyes bravely fought back until the score was tied at 5. But when the Bulldogs opened up a two goal lead once more, the deal was done. Climbing the mountain a fourth time proved to be too much to ask.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Kim Theut
Kim had a great night in the face-off circle, winning 10 of her 12 opportunities. She also had an assist on the first Buckeye goal, a big equalizer at the time. Just as importantly, she provided a lot of energy, keeping her feet moving all game long.

UMD Honorable Mention: Zoe Hickel
The GWG may have been a little soft, but the momentum shift was huge, decisive and final -- and the shot came off of Zoe's stick. And there was certainly nothing flukey about the rest of Hickel's outing. She was a constant source of danger, particularly on the power play.

#3 Star: Kari Schmitt, Ohio State
Kari has a cannon for a shot, and two of her launches resulted in the final two Buckeye goals. The first deflected in off Julia McKinnon. The second needed no help, Schmitt simply pounded the puck into the net on her own.

#2 Star: Jessica Wong, UMD
What's not to like about a four point night? It's always a pleasure to watch Jessica play, and Friday's game was no exception. The first line center opened the scoring, setting the tone for the offensive explosion to come. Like Hickel, Wong was creative and productive throughout the game, particularly on the power play.

#1 Star: Briggette Lacquette, UMD
With all do respect to everyone else on the ice, this was an easy choice. Briggette's game was a tour-de-force. Her 5 points led all scorers, and included a hat trick. Her +4 was tops for either team. Lacquette's 5 blocked shots were unmatched by anyone on either side. Really now, with all that hard work, hasn't Briggette earned an afternoon off on Saturday? :)

Next Up: Rematch with UMD. Face-off is at 2:07 PM @ The Schottenstein Center

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Saturday, January 26th
UMD 3
Ohio State 2

Second Period Surge Powers Bulldog Win
This weekend at the Schottenstein Center might be dubbed The Agony and the Ecstasy. Men's Hockey provided the ecstasy with a much needed, well deserved sweep of Lake Superior State. Unfortunately, the Women's team went through the agony.

In a span of exactly 5 minutes, UMD bagged 3 second period goals. Once again, the Buckeyes were placed in the unenviable position of playing catch-up. Once again, the valiant comeback bid come up just short. Also similar to Friday, both power plays clicked. In the end, both teams went 2 for 5 with the extra skater.

There were, however, some differences between the two games. Friday's "Snow Day Scrimmage" was a bit short on defense. Overall, Saturday was much more tightly contested. But ultimately it was another 3 points for the Bulldogs.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Hokey Langan
Though scored in losing effort, Hokey's goal is destined for the season highlight video. Executing a perfect give and go with cross-slot passes, Langan pounded Paige Sememza's feed into the short side of the net.

UMD Honorable Mention: (tie) Hannah Bramm, and Katie Wilson
Hannah and Katie joined forces to create the GWG. They came together as both scrambled for the rebound of a Tea Villila shot. Arguably Wilson should have yielded to Bramm; Hannah's momentum was moving toward the net. But it didn't play out that way. Instead, the resulting double-hit turned into a quirky but deadly effective shot on goal. The Buckeye goalie made the initial stop, but couldn't handle the rebound. Brienna Gillanders hungrily gathered up the loose puck and stuffed it in the net. At the time, it seemed like little more than an insurance goal. But in the end it paid a large dividend.

#3 Star: Jenna McParland, UMD
Earlier in season, IIRC, some USCHO posts described Jenna's play as listness and uninspired. Well, I'm hear to tell you that reports of McParland's demise were greatly exxagerated. Jenna was a force up and down the ice Saturday. Her goal alone qualifies for that description. Down in a defensive corner, Shara Jasper banked a breakout pass off the near boards. McParland accepted the puck around her blue line, and carried the puck all the way into scoring position. From there she patiently curled across the slot, and then used her excellent reach to wrap the puck around the Buckeye goalie and into the goal cage.

#2 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
Paige's brilliant pass led directly to Hokey Langan's goal, as noted above. Semenza also had a goal of her own, steering Kari Schmitt's centering pass into the lower right hand corner. The two scoring plays were by no means clones. A fully set-up power play generated the Langan goal; the Semenza goal came on an odd-man rush. But the plays were similar enough to say that Paige was returning the favor for the great pass she had earlier received. Semenza's fine two point effort was almost enough to pull the Buckeyes even. Almost.

#1 Star: (tie) Zoe Hickel, and Jamie Kenyon, UMD
The second UMD goal was the play of the game. That was the "oh no, here we go again" moment. Working on a 5x3, Zoe took an offensive zone face-off and perfectly pulled the puck back to Jamie at the top of the right circle. From there, Kenyon dangled out to the right point. Meanwhile, Hickel stealthily glided into scoring position. Jamie launched a crisp, low drive toward the right post -- perfectly timed for Zoe's arrival. Hickel finished the play by expertly guiding the puck into the net. All of Saturday's goals had their selling points; but this one had the largest Wow factor. Gotta split the #1 Star this time; hope no one minds.

Next Up: Road Trip To Bemidji State

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Coming up the first weekend in Feb. 2013:

Ohio State @ Bemidji State

North Dakota @ Minnesota State

Minnesota-Duluth @ Minnesota

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Ohio State @ Bemidji State I was a little disappointed in the Buckeyes for not getting at least a split in Grand Forks this past weekend, (a) because I like them more and (b) losing both games cost me a perfect record with my prognostications. ;) But I think they bounce back against the Beavers this weekend and win both.

North Dakota @ Minnesota State I see the Whioux having more to gain and will be more motivated in this series, and they come away with a sweep.

Minnesota-Duluth @ Minnesota Another big test for the Gophers against a team that's much improved compared to when they last played back in early November. The Gophers will prevail in both, but I see Friday's opening game being an especially close nailbiter.

Could be wrong but wasn't Ohio State hosting UMD this past weekend?

Actually Ohio State was playing UMD and we were swept at home (ouch). And yes, we were disappointed. I sincerely hope you are correct about our fortunes in Bemidji. We need the six points.

Sorry for the error; don't know why I was thinking Grand Forks instead of Duluth! Anyway, good luck in Bemidji! :)
