WCHA Thread IV

Re: WCHA Thread IV

For the moment, UND is in fifth place. Their advantage is that they're done with Minnesota for the regular season and UMD and Ohio State aren't. Any of those teams that can take points from the Gophers get a big leg up.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Just took a look at the latest Pairwise Rankings. Assuming they are correct, then currently Wisconsin, Ohio State, and North Dakota are effectively 8th, 9th, and 10th. That could make for some interesting by-play the remainder of the regular season and in the conference playoffs, starting with this weekend's series between Wisconsin and North Dakota.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Eeyore's point, plus the fact that Wisconsin has played two additional games, makes the standings even closer than they appear at first glance. Expect an amazing race the rest of the way.

As for Crazy Dave's point on the pairwise, I certainly hope one of us can get to #7 or better. We need to at least make it difficult for the NCAA to schedule a first round, WCHA intraconference match-up.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Please... be my guest... this gets the "whatsupwiththat?" award.

Kenyon had a really great game and performed and led the team at a critical time: Start of the second half where not only did they need to sweep, but they needed a convincing sweep. She was tremendous on the ice and not just for her SOG or G's. Was is better than Kessel's performance? I can't say. I wasn't there. Is Kessel amazing right now in general? Absolutely.

In addition to her 4 goals Kessel also had 6 assists, and her 10 total points came against a much stronger opponent. And of Minnesota's 12 goals on the weekend, she figured into the scoring on 10 of them. Not to take anything away from Kenyon, as I'm sure she did play great, but her two goals on Sunday came after her team was already up 6-1 and 7-2 respectively.

My god, really?

Make that 6 goals and 4 assists for 10 point weekend.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I think that the intent is to spread these awards a bit. At the end of the year, it will still say that Kessel was honored "X" number of times, so it's all good.

Good column on the women's main page. This is a big weekend for both the Whioux and Badgers per post season aspirations. UND needs the sweep pretty urgently I'd think. Interesting comments from Idalski about the improvements and progress he imagined necessary to compete nationally...when he took the job, vs. coming to know it's even tougher a few years later, to reach that level.

A whale of a series. The Whioux PP was impressive last weekend. The first PP unit pretty scary. Talented scorers all around. Rigsby will be tested. UND really needs to cut down the penalty minutes too I'd say...for hopes of two wins.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Friday, January 18th
Ohio State 1
St. Cloud State 1
(Ohio State Wins Shootout 1-0)

Hardworking Huskies Grab a Point; Buckeyes Win Shootout
In the developing donnybrook for home ice playoff positions, it's been said that the contending teams can't afford to leave any points on the table. Friday night the Buckeyes earned 2 of the 3 possible points. The Huskies grabbed the third point for themselves with a determined performance; nothing was "left behind" by either team.

Every portion of the ice was contested. The Huskies won many loose pucks, particularly in the second period. Quite honestly St. Cloud was the better team in the middle stanza, during which they tied the score and outshot Ohio State 15-8. In third period, the Buckeyes retook control of the game, especially in the last 5 minutes of regulation time when they mounted a furious assault on the Huskie net. But the St. Cloud defense didn't crack.

Hard to say to if the point the Huskies earned will damage the Buckeyes' post-season aspirations. Guess we won't know for sure until the end of the regular season. Certainly the Buckeye point earned in the shootout limits such damage. But leaving the Ice Rink last night, I truly wasn't dwelling on that. My main emotion was respect for the Huskies.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Molli Mott
The Huskies goal scorer received a crisp pass from the left point, took a stride into the high slot and buried the puck in the upper left hand corner of the net. The nicely placed shot was vitally important on a night when goals were hard to come by.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Danielle Gagne
The Buckeyes' lone regulation tally came when Danielle finished a little give and go pass from Ally Tarr. Byranna Neuwald earned an assist on the play, carrying the puck across both the red and blue lines and dishing the puck to Gagne. The early goal gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead; little did we know that would be it until the shootout.

#3 Star: Audrey Hanmer, St. Cloud State
The story of the night was the Huskie defensive effort. Everyone deserves some credit; up front, on 'D' and in goal. I'll let Audrey take the bow for the group. Her leadership and confidence stood out; her six shots on goal was the high total for St. Cloud. As she led her team through the handshake line, she was justly proud.

#2 Star: Chelsea Knapp, Ohio State
Chelsea played a strong game in goal. As noted above, she was just one well placed shot away from a shutout. After Mott's goal, Knapp looked a little shaky for a few moments, giving up a couple of awkward rebounds. But she quickly regained composure and was perfect the rest of the way. Good thing! And with the game on the line in the shootout, Chelsea was flat-out brilliant; patiently outwaiting each St. Cloud shooter, then stuffing each Huskie shot.

#1 Star: Ally Tarr, Ohio State
While I hate to place undue emphasis on the shootout, tonight it's due. Only one goal was scored, but it was a thing of beauty. Finding room in the upper right hand corner, Ally slammed the puck off the underside of the crossbar. From there the puck authoritatively caromed to the ice, just over the goal line. The fact Tarr assisted on the only Buckeye goal in regulation time solidifies the choice.

Next Up: Rematch with St. Cloud. Face-off is at 4:07 PM.

Pgb, anxiously awaiting your "unofficial" three stars for today's 3-1 win. The Bucks looked much better today.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Final From Saturday, January 19th
Ohio State 3
St. Cloud State 1

Buckeyes Keep Plugging Away; Are Rewarded With 3-1 Win
It wasn't easy, but in the end the Buckeyes were just a little better than the Huskies in most phases of the game. From the stats we see OSU outshot SCSU 28-25. Face-offs? Advantage Buckeyes, 34-27. Power Plays? Buckeyes 1-4 with 10 shots; Huskies 0-3 with 3 shots. In the end, the power play conversion sealed the victory.

Coming into the rematch, a common sentiment was that in reaction to yesterday's tie, the Buckeyes would come out blazing. Um, not exactly. It was the Huskies who scored in the first minute of the game. From there, the Buckeyes slowly righted the ship, patiently breaking down the stubborn Huskies. The Buckeyes just kept plugging away. In the end, the steady effort generated a goal in each of the three periods.

Oh, and while not directly relevant, I hope everyone in Minnesota had a good Hockey Day. Before leaving for the Ice Rink I watched a little of the outdoor action from Grand Rapids on DirecTV. An awesome winter sports scene to be sure.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Julie Friend
Julie had a nice weekend, stopping 58 of 62 Buckeye shots. Certainly she had many impressive saves, and helped keep the game in doubt until the end.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Chelsea Knapp
Another solid game for Chelsea. Although I know she'd like to have a certain rebound back, she was pretty much flawless the rest of the way. For the series, Knapp made 54 saves on 56 shots, and was perfect 3 for 3 in Friday's shootout. Solid numbers, and a fine weekend's work.

#3 Star: (tie)Abby Ness, St. Cloud State; and Julia Gilbert, St. Cloud State
St. Cloud certainly started off with a bang. Skye Kelly grabbed the puck at her blue line, quickly steering it ahead to Gilbert. Gilbert then made a beeline for the Buckeye net, actually banging two shots on goal in rapid succession. The second left a fat rebound. Ness, who had been smartly following the play, arrived right on time to pound the puck home.

#2 Star: (tie)Sara Schmitt, Ohio State; and Kari Schmitt, Ohio State
It's probably a cop-out to make the twins share a star -- again. But it's just so hard to choose, especially when both make vital contributions at both ends of the rink. Tonight Sara had assists on both the tying goal and GWG. Kari just had a single scoring point, but it was memorable. The play began with Taylor Kuehl winning an offensive zone draw a little too well, sending the puck all the way back to the Buckeye zone. From there Kari carried the puck the length of the ice, weaving through traffic. She finally got the puck back to Kuehl, who was positioned down low. This time Taylor harnessed her energy in a 100% positive way, snapping the puck past the Huskie goalie on the short side.

#1 Star: Ally Tarr, Ohio State
For most of Fall Semester, Ally was always the playmaker, never the goal scorer. While goals and assists are both worth one scoring point, it was clear that Tarr was hungry for some goals. Now? Well, fans of the Hunger Games will be tempted to call her the Girl on Fire. I'm not sure if that's the perfect description, but I do know she's been a tremendously productive hockey player of late. Tonight she bagged the tying and winning goals.

Harkening back to the second RIT game, Tarr earned a third consecutive #1 Star tonight. That's a rarity, if not an unprecedented occurrence for the Unofficial Three Stars. Not that I have any "real" honors to bestow, of course. But since I make a conscious effort to spread my stars around, the fact that one particular player couldn't be denied for a third straight game certainly suggests a series of standout performances. Well done, Ally!

Next Up: Ohio State hosts Minnesota-Duluth @ The Schottenstein Center. The Friday/Saturday Games both face-off at 2:07. As per the Marketing Department's promotion, if you're Too Cool For School, we'll see you Friday afternoon at the Schott. And even if you're a more studious sort, at least plan on Saturday's rematch.;)

WCHA recaps from the recent weekend action:

http://www.wcha.com/women/index.php

I tried to go back and dig up pre-season WCHA prognostications...appears they've aged beyond recall. From what I can recall of what most thought likely at that time, OSU's and UND's current positions are perhaps the most notable deviations. I think a fair number WCHA fans had UND at #1 or #2 spot. A guess would be most had OSU @ #4 or #5. All in all...I'm comfortable with any "surprises" that may have transpired thus far. Including a team or two I have not specifically mentioned. ;)

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Minnesota-Duluth @ Ohio State

North Dakota @ St. Cloud State
