Re: WCHA Thread III

This weekend's series' at Ridder and The Ralph could go a long ways toward determining home ice for the first round of the conference playoffs. Whatever happens, it looks like there will be at least one team that gets home ice for the first time in its history--either UND or BSU.

Indeed. I'll be keeping an eye on results in the Sioux / Beaver series. I'm rooting for the Beavers. My contempt for UND has increased for a "couple" reasons.

Guess they're playing in Roseau on Saturday? Nice opportunity for Ram fans to watch some D-I hockey.

WCHA showdown between UND and Bemidji heads to Roseau to help promote sport
Promote the sport...and pretty savvy of the UND & BSU coaching staffs as well I think, with a good opportunity to make an impression for their programs. Everyone knows there's always some highly skilled kids in that neck of the woods.

You seem to be implying that their motives were not strictly altruistic? As if Roseau doesn't need events like this to grow the sport of hockey?

:D

It's all good. Attending such an event could surely inspire some young athlete to future hockey stardom. ;)

That is pretty funny. "People of Roseau: Behold the sport of ice hockey!" I'd guess there aren't too many places in the state with a greater per-capita participation. Other than Loken, most of their recent D-I commits have seemed to go to SCSU though.

Absolutely agree that these teams are aiming to impress the fans, players and parents in this hockey hotbed but I'm all for it--anything that helps promote womens hockey specially where there is great interest!!

I think it's safe to say we're just having a little fun here, froshgramp. But if next year they decide to hold the game in Winnipeg we just might be a little more critical... ;)

Re: WCHA Thread III

Hey, what a great idea! We should host a game in Toronto. Any takers?

Leaving the fanciful aside, I have no problem with UND vs. BSU in Roseau. It's a nice treat for a deserving hockey community. It should be an appealing change of pace for the coaches and players. And while the recruiting implications are obvious, they don't strike me as inappropriate.

To argue that it's about growing the sport, though, is just ever-so-slightly hypocritical. The best comparison I can think of? Every few years OSU Football is able to convince an opponent to "host" a game in Cleveland. Again, some of the motives are altruistic, while others are clearly self-serving. But it's certainly not about "growing the sport of football" in NE Ohio!

Before the knee jerk reply comes, I understand completely that Women's Hockey needs to grow everywhere, even in the established hotbeds. But if growing the sport was the main goal, the game obviously would have been staged somewhere else.

Re: WCHA Thread III

What struck me funny in that article was when they mentioned that "Both the Fighting Sioux and Beavers squads feature talent from northern Minnesota." Seems to me that would be a great lead-in to feature the northern girls who have been a huge part of the BSU success this season, since I'd consider this the genius of Coach Sertich (getting at least one Roseville girl each year isn't quite enough is it?) But then they list only the Wheelhouses. Apparently Coleraine (Erickson), Walker (Arola), Cloquet (Lundquist), and Moose Lake (Vichorek) are what? Southern Minnesota? :)

Well...we wait another day to see who gets the #2 spot in the WCHA. The rematch should be a good one. It was an exciting game at Ridder tonight.

We may have to wait until Sunday. BSU is now only 3 points behind both UMD and UM with a game in hand, so if they swept NoDak, they could tie the winner of tomorrow's game at Ridder (or even lead outright if the maroon & gold outfits do another shootout.)

Who would have thunk it at the beginning of the season? We knew they would be improved, but fighting for 2nd place after the break? Sertich for COTY?

Re: WCHA Thread III

Sertich for COTY?
The candidates at this point would have to be Johnson, Sertich, and Idalski. Of those, Steve Sertich has the least to work with, and has accomplished as much as UND. One could say recruiting is a big part of coaching, but S.S. has done a good job getting kids to Bemidji. I'd assume the new building will make that task easier in the future.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Don't want to sound negative as BSU has been very good this year but they finish with ND, UMD, MINNY, WISCONSIN and OSU and a improving MSU and will be difficult to win 4of those games. Just saying.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Agree, they have a tough schedule -- just about everyone does. That's why this may be a bigger series for the Beavers than UND, because the Sioux are already done with UMD.

That's a schedule to test the Beavers mettle alright. The Beavers have obviously improved...they'll get a clearer picture as to how much after that stretch. As will those watching.

I'd still have to go with Serty as COTY at this point though...especially if they could win a few of those games.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Did you notice UND beat the Beaves tonight 5-2. Mo played on D and scored two goals....we'll see what happens next.
