Re: WCHA Thread III

Candidates for the yet to be announced WCHA recogitions for the week?

Spooner? Tarr? Kessel? Lorence? Smith? Wong? Someone from UW?

I'd say Wong for DPotW based on Sat -- 5 pts and +4. However, no points for her on Sunday and -1 in a loss, so who knows. Spooner should get OPotW with 5 goals plus another in a SO. Kessel had 5 as well, but BSU is tougher to score against than SCSU, so that's how I'd go. Don't know that any rookie really stood out. Ramsey had 3 assists, but in a 14-0 weekend for her team, it isn't that impactful. I don't think any other frosh had more than 2 points.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Hmmm, the Rookie of the Week's headline is about Meghan Lorence, and that's definitely her in the picture, but the story honors last week's winner, Blayre Turnbull.
I just emailed a comment to info@wcha.com regarding that error.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, October 14th
Ohio State 5
St. Cloud State 1

The Unofficial Three Stars are back. For those who don't know or have forgotten, no official stars of the game are chosen at the OSU Ice Rink. This is an attempt to fill that void, pass out some much deserved praise and get people talking about the Women's WCHA. But if the day comes when official stars are chosen, this little project is out of business.;)

Tonight's Buckeye win was truly the product of a team effort. Yes, there were many highlights. But it was very difficult to pick individual stars. For example, five different Buckeyes scored goals; six others tallied assists. Even more than usual, it must be understood that the stars represent successful units.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun
Honorable Mention: Brittany Toor, St. Cloud State
Brittany's hustling forecheck led to the lone Huskie tally. With her linemates changing on the fly, the first line right wing flew around the back of the Buckeye net, disrupting the OSU breakout. When Toor picked up the loose puck off the resulting turnover, fourth line center Jocelyn Zabrick had arrived on the scene. Toor put the puck right in Zabrick's wheelhouse, and Jocelyn made no mistake with her shot. Coming just 1:20 into the contest, it made for a fine start for St. Cloud. Unfortunately for the Huskies, that was one of the relatively few quality chances of the night.

Don't know if Toor was late finishing the change. But if so, I imagine her coaches found a way to forgive her.:)

#3 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
If not for the Buckeye Penalty Killers, this one could have been a good bit tighter. As it was, the Huskie PP Unit went 0 for 8. I've recognized Paige's work on the PK before, but she always earns it. She's constantly disrupting the opposing PP, and seems to be increasingly adept at milking penalty seconds off the clock. Everyone on the PK gets a thumbs up. But we'll let Paige stand as a symbol for the unit.

#2 Star: (Tie)Annie Svedin, Ohio State and Madison Marcotte, Ohio State
The Buckeye Defense was stingy up and down the line-up, limiting St. Cloud to 17 shots for the game. So this is a night to recognize the depth of the Buckeye D Corps. Svedin and Marcotte led the entire team in plus/minus, recording a +4 and +3 respectively. Both got on the scoresheet with assists, with Marcotte earning a pair of points. It's great to spread the recognition around a bit, and Annie and Madison more than earned the kudos. One down note: Svedin was shaken up toward the end of the game. Hope to see Annie back in the line-up tomorrow.

#1 Star: (Tie)Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State and Natalie Spooner, Ohio State
The Buckeye Offense was quite productive tonight, putting up a robust 48 shots on goal. Kuehl and Spooner led the charge with 6 shots apiece. They also combined on the play of the night, the fourth Buckeye goal. After Svedin held the puck in the zone at the left point, the Huskie D simply could not separate Kuehl from the puck. Twice Taylor wheeled into the high slot, launching stiff shots toward the St. Cloud net. On the second, Spooner executed a beautiful tip play, steering the puck into the upper left-hand corner. Speaking only for myself, I was left babbling mildly inappropriate language in celebratory praise. I will say that one of the words used was "awesome."

The big play ended a scoring drought of over 30 minutes, and basically settled the issue. A nice insurance goal by Tina Hollowell (first of the season) came just 12 seconds later and completed the scoring.

Up Next: Saturday's Rematch with St. Cloud @ 4:07 PM. It's the Buckeyes Go Pink Event, recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Final From Saturday, October 15th
Ohio State 5
St. Cloud State 1

With apologies to Led Zeppelin, the Score Remains the Same.

Certainly there were some differences between the two games. For one thing, the Shots on Goal disparity wasn't as great on Saturday. Power plays had an impact on shot totals. As with Friday, there was a generous batch of penalties of the hooking/holding variety. But this time it seemed like the Huskies spent almost half the game on the PP. The two major penalties account for most of the difference, I suppose. In any event, the Huskie offense was more dangerous in the rematch, although at the end of the day there wasn't an increase in production.

Overall, the impression remains that there is a bit of a talent gap between the current St. Cloud team and the rest of the league, as was the case last year. Certainly the Huskies have good players. But they'll need some more horses to get back to their winning ways.

At the same time, the Buckeyes looked confident and effective all weekend, certainly a pleasure for the home fans at the OSU Ice Rink. But note that the bar will be raised considerably next weekend in Grand Forks.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun
St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Alex Nelson
A skilled and determined player, to be sure. Alex's persistent effort generated the scoring chance that Audrey Hamner finished. Nelson was also a solid 8 for 14 on face-offs.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Minttu Tuominen
Minttu is one of those quietly effective players; often an unsung hero. She played a crucial role on the Buckeyes' initial tally, appearing to tip in Annie Svedin's shot from the left point. At the very least, she was an effective, distracting presence in the slot.

#3 Star: Chelsea Knapp, Ohio State
Another strong performance by the Buckeye Defense, particularly on the PK. Chelsea was at the heart of effort, playing shutout hockey for over 50 minutes. Today we'll let the keeper stand as the symbol for the defense.

#2 Star: Ally Tarr, Ohio State
The Buckeye Offense scored every which way: 5x4, 4x5, 4x4, 5x5 Unassisted, 5x5 with Two Assists. Ally seemed especially comfortable with the varying situations, netting a goal and an assist. Tarr finished at +2 for the game.

#1 Star: Laura McIntosh, Ohio State
Mac is extremely patient with the puck, often with highly productive results. You had to love her moxie on the third Buckeye goal. Dangling with the puck, she paused momentarily to complain about a non-call on a slash, shrugged, then proceeded into the slot and buried the shot. Laura was effective all night, finishing with a goal and an assist. Her +3 stat led all players.

I've said for a couple seasons now that Laura Mac is the heart and soul of the Buckeye offense. As Laura goes, so go the Buckeyes. Natalie Spooner is obviously the best player on the ice for us, but Laura, in my humble opinion, is the glue that holds the Buckeye offense together. I just hope we have others step up when Laura Mac and Spoon are gone after this season. They will certainly be missed. I am going sit back at the games this season and just enjoy watching those two play for our Buckeyes one final season, along with our other seniors. If Coach Handrahan can continue to recruit players like that, we should be in good shape in the coming years. I am really enjoying what I am seeing on the ice out of our team this season. We will certainly have a tough test next weekend, but if we can get a split in Grand Forks, I will be happy.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Everyone in conference action for the weekend ahead.

St. Cloud State @ Bemidji State

Wisconsin @ Minnesota-Duluth

Minnesota State @ Minnesota

Ohio State @ North Dakota

The race is on! Looking forward to seeing what happens in Duluth and Grand Forks.

Depends on how you define "best, " I suppose. Spooner may ultimately be more effective at the Olympic level; we'll likely get a chance to see. Certainly Spoon is physically stronger than most of her peers, obviously including Mac. But who's the more valuable player? The more effective player? That's really tough. I'd say it varies game by game -- as per this weekend's Unofficial Three Stars.

Couldn't agree more; I'm going enjoy every possible moment of their Senior seasons. It's such a privilege to able to see the stars play all four years. In this respect, Women's D-1 actually has the advantage over Men's D-1.

Agreed. If this team is going to reach its full potential, winning some of the tough road games is a must. Next weekend would be a great time to start!

Excellent points, and it is a really tough question to answer. Maybe it is not "obvious" as I originally stated!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Can someone tell me how the 3 stars of the week are chosen? Because I'm not getting 2 of the 3 this week. Look, it's not they are all not talented awesome women... I'm just sayin'.

Each team can nominate one player for each category, but they don't always. These show up in the bottom paragraph -- "also nominated." Then somebody from the league office makes the selections. I don't know how that works, but it appears that they attempt to spread it around to some extent.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I'm a little surprised that Alex Rigsby won the defensive award. Not that she didn't deserve it, but her stats were essentially equal to Noora Raty's. They each gave up the same number of goals (5) in their two game split, and their total saves (55 vs 50) and save percentages (.912 vs .909) were also nearly the same. Apparently, they must have concluded that Rigsby had a greater number of difficult saves than did Raty, and was more essential to her team gaining the split. Perhaps someone who was there and saw both games could comment.
