WCHA Thread III

Re: WCHA Thread III

Sounds great if you say it fast enough...but it's all relative. I watched that series where they beat the Pandas to win the CIS West a couple of years ago and while I was happy for the players and their success...objectively speaking, watching that quality of hockey was like sandpapering your retinas.

Such "success" is, as I mentioned, all relative. And it certainly doesn't come close to putting them in the same league, ability wise, as most of the better D-1 teams...especially most of the
WCHA teams.

I have watched several U of M games in the last several years and have always been extremely underwhelmed.

While I do respect your opinion, you must only like the best of the best and consider your statements elitist or be darned. I've watched plenty of entertaining hockey at various levels, whether it be the CIS, D1, D3 or AA hockey. One of the statements from your original post I completely disagreed with was:

.......They would struggle, to put it diplomatically, against a half decent AA team. ....

Not sure what you define as a AA team, but in my mind in Canada that would be the top tier Midget teams, or in the case of Ontario the PWHL. I think you will find that except for the top end teams (Aeros etc), AA teams would have a hard time winning over mid pack or higher CIS teams given the same terms and conditions (Full team, neither in tryout mode). Remember when you see early season match-ups between CIS and club teams, the club teams have a full roster, already playing, while many of those CIS teams are still in tryout mode.

Not so...you're making an assumption that is incorrect.

and consider your statements elitist or be darned.

You can consider my statements however you'd like but I would certainly disagree with your conclusion.

Correct.

I think that the basic difference between us on this topic is that you are speaking in generalities while I'm referring more to specifics...specifically, this team that I have watched play several times over the last several years.

(I goofed on the intended format of the response but I think you'll understand it easily enough).

I like those picks too. I did say PRE-SEASON! And I did say let's see what happens.

Did you see Goldy in a tuxedo for the inauguration of the new prexy?

I thought Goldy looked GOOD!

Interesting sequence at 3 and 4 as well. The Sioux get early opportunities to make a strong case for that pick...or better, in the next couple weeks. We'll see what happens there...but I think that placement is pretty legit as well.

Goldy in a tux. Would have liked to have seen that.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Whitecaps add one more skater to the thirteen who played yesterday (and a pretty good one at that, former Bulldog Jocylyn Laroque) and turn the tide on their hosts. Also worth noting that Van Buesekom showed up to play goal for the 'Caps.

Whitecaps 5, UMD 3.

Shots were 34-32 for UMD.

Wrazidlo (another former Bulldog) worked the series as a referee along with Thorsheim (former Gopher). Thorsheim has appeared as a referee at least once previously that I am aware of but has except with rare exception always been an AR in this league.

So the Beavers go 1-0-1 vs. Providence and UND splits with BU in Boston. Decent showing in early season matchups with the pre-season favorites in Hockey East.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Friday
Syracuse vs. St. Cloud State Syracuse wins!
Union @ Minnesota Minnesota wins!

Saturday
Union vs. St. Cloud State St. Cloud State wins!
Syracuse@ Minnesota Minnesota wins!

I picked these games correctly, but I missed a couple in the others:

Providence @ Bemidji State SPLIT [BSU gets 3 points with a tie (officially) and a win.]

North Dakota @ Boston University SPLIT [Correct!]

Lindenwood @ Minnesota State MSU SWEEP [Correct, but the first game was closer than expected!]

Minn Whitecaps @ Minnesota-Duluth UMD SWEEP [Ooops! the Whitecaps win the second one, and it's a split!]*

*(hard to pick exhibitions featuring the Whitecaps, since you're never quite sure who and how many are going to be in uniform). ;)

Wow, some great matchups on tap for the weekend!

Would it be unreasonable to forecast (or hope for?) a split in the UND/Wisconsin series?

BSU/TOSU, and BC/UMD should also be very competitive and I could see those teams splitting as well.

And I'm pulling for Minnesota State; hopefully they can find a way to win at least one at home.

It's what I hope to see...though no easy task in Madison. Checking national stats.... Sioux need to slow down the "excessive" pts. accumulation by the Badgers to make a split a reasonable proposition. Also, be nice when the new facility might allow for avoiding the Friday and Sunday series for opponents and their traveling fans.

Here goes what may be my first, and last, predictions. Always wanted to try.

BSU splits with OSU 4-3, 2-4
MN sweeps St. Cloud 5-1, 6-0
NoDak @ Wisconsin....wow, this is the series of the weekend, and although UND gives them good games, Wisc comes out on top 5-3, 5-4.
I hope the MSU-Mankato has a good show, but Mercyhurst too much...close on Friday, more lopsided on Sat 6-4, 5-1
Duluth and BC also a great early-season series...another tough one...I'll go split w/ BC winning Fri 5-3 and the Dogs coming back Sat 6-3.

It's still early, so I'm just going on from what I know last season with what I've read/heard this season. Take it for what it's worth...but should be a good discussion point. I'm no "Jimmy the Greek".
