Re: WCHA Thread III

Don't forget OSU"S been without Hokey who's a top 5 player and now I hear Paige Semanza is banged up and probably won't play this weekend. That's 3 top players. Ouch!

Might be time to come up with a creative new game plan.

Clearly the staff will need to make adjustments and teammates will need to step up / into bigger roles...but having those players unavailable could severely affect any potential strategy a staff could devise in a less than positive fashion. Definitely a bad time to lose the services of such key players. Hope they can get as many as possible back for the WCHA 1st round.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Well, as a preliminary matter, I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. If you mean does OSU have an unusual proclivity for intentionally for steering the play behind its own net, I would have to say no. But I think you're really asking whether the Buckeyes are a bit inefficient on the breakout, thus leading to scrums and turnovers behind the net. There could be some to truth to the latter assertion.

In either case, I'd like to see a game with the question clearly in mind before passing judgement. Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to have that opportunity for a while.:o But looking back with limited memory, (intuition?) I'd say there was room for better execution in this regard.

What I've seen the several games I've watched is the defense dig hard to get the puck out... make a fine first pass to the wing on the boards or up the middle only to watch the forward turn the puck over at the blue line or in neutral ice just to get it jammed back into the D-zone to start all over again. I also see both D picking up players as they come into the D zone just to watch teams like UMD drop a 3rd player into the rush... isn't that the responsibilty of a center? This team has plenty of issues if you want to start picking them out, but to say it's all the defense I think is inaccurate.

Agree with this assessment. Also, find it interesting that there are even opinions and observations about OSU hockey (other than the loyal regulars osu alum and pgb). OSU hockey in the past has rarely ever been mentioned in any thread and typically flies way under the radar as compared to the comments made from the Gopher, Bulldog, Wisco fans, etc. I personally think it's a good thing that people are becoming somewhat dissatisfied by the consistently mediocre (and some would say underperforming) Buckeye teams.

A team like OSU may take a very conservative approach regarding injured players playing or not this weekend, because they will have little riding on this outcome compared to the WCHA quarterfinal round.

Certainly agree we've had turnovers of this type.

This is the kind of thing I was alluding to when I said there was "no single smoking gun." Team defense is the responsibility of the entire squad, not just the blueliners. Same thing with the breakout.

I pretty much agree with your post, except maybe the part about wanting to pick out issues! Quite honestly the recent conversation has been a little painful for me. I've long hoped for more OSU posts. But having people publicly air out their grievances wasn't very high on my wish list.:o

At the same time, I don't blame people for being frustrated. The results of the Winter Quarter home games, as a group, have been tough to accept. Here's to hoping that the Buckeyes make some noise this weekend in Bemidji, and in the playoffs.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Does anyone know if many D1 games are televised throughout the season on the Big Ten Network?
I'm aware of 6 Minnesota home games that were on BTN this year, only one of which was televised live. The others are student productions that are shown after the fact. Wisconsin had a live broadcast of their "Fill the Bowl" game, and because the game this week was done by "Student U", I'm guessing that they had more of those as well.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Several of us Gopher fans were there tonight. Fun game. UND came up just short of their 3,201 attendance goal... recorded count was 3,158.

Just an update on how playoffs shake out...

The only position still up for debate is the #2 spot...

1. Wisconsin - clinched two weeks ago

2. Minnesota - lead by 3 points over...

3. Minnesota-Duluth - picked up a win tonight and hold the tie-breaker over the Gophers, but still need help to move to second with an outright win (i.e. not in a shootout) on Saturday by...

4. North Dakota - tonight's loss locks them into this spot

5. Bemidji State - locked into the position last weekend, but got a win today over...

6. Ohio State - who were locked into this position today thanks to a loss by...

7. Minnesota State - who were locked into this position with their loss to WI

8. St. Cloud State - oh... yeah... them... ummm... yeah... They did win last week. :o

May be without a couple more players for playoffs. Svedin (D) went into boards hard at end of game and was definitely not all there when helped off ice. And Wild (D) was benched during the 2nd Bemidji game; apparently in the coach's doghouse and probably will not play in the Gopher series. This can't help OSU chances.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Just in case someone missed it. Brilliant!

No doubt a great move, however, wasn't she in the crease?? I've seen this more and more where a player seems to be in the crease when the goal is scored. I thought that was against the rules, or, has that rule changed??

An offensive player can be in the crease if they have the puck or the puck is already in the crease. They've even relaxed the rule from what it was a few years ago. It used to be that if a skate was in the crease at all, they could whistle it dead. Now, it's only a cause for stoppage if they are in the crease and interfering with the goalie's ability to see or stop the puck. So if a goalie is on one post and an attacker is waiting on the far post and partially in the crease, that is no longer a problem.

Well I'll mention the Buckeyes...I still consider them very dangerous as a first round WCHA tournament opponent regardless of their season. I'd be very surprised if Wild wasn't on the ice this weekend too.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Soon, very soon, the pain of watching this season will be over for Huskies fans. If they manage to somehow actually win a game against Wisconsin, I might actually eat my SCSU jersey!
