WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

I don't know, the denver-wisconsin games have yet to be played. I expect once wisconsin's top line gets tired, denver will roll to impressive victories.

Do you really see Denver as being that much better than the gophers? I realize playing in Denver makes the conditioning part more significant, and I gather that's why you think the outcomes will be different than they were this weekend. But aside from the altitude factor, you don't think the Pios are a better team than the gophers do you?

we always lose on Fridays, our best player didn't play, and we are your biggest rival. Denver smoked us on the road, too. I think Wisconsin's best players want to get the season over fast, so they can go pro.

FYI only expect Schultz to bolt. The concensous is Zengerlee is not a flight risk.

I think for any series this late in the season, you can toss out the season stats and look to the short term stats for a better view of the teams.

I guess I wasn't too familiar with how it went for the Gophs in Denver. Still, you have to think that if the Badgers can stay with the Gophs at Mariucci, they are capable of making it a contest in Denver. They won't win in a shootout, but they are capable of playing a shutdown game.

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

If DU plays like they did last Friday night at UNO, they will win the series. They dominated the game from start to finish, forechecked the hell out of UNO, didn't take stupid penalties and barely gave them a sniff at a good shot on goal. The other DU team we have seen this year, turns over the puck in the D zone, takes too many lazy penalties and is impatient with the puck. If that team shows up, who knows what happens. DU played most of the season without arguably its 3 best players; Beau Bennett, David Makowski and Sam Brittain. Brittain is back and is rounding into form and we have yet to see him at his best. Beau may or may not be back this season and it is looking highly doubtful if we will see Makowski back this year. Even if Bennett and Makowski do return, who knows how effective they will be given the time they have missed. The team has learned to play without them and has been doing just fine with a strong 2nd half. DU cannot afford not to give its best effort every game from hereon in. The Badgers will be a strong test in this first round and this series could go 3 games.

Games will be webcast on Pioneer Vision on DU website for a fee.

Regular Season in the WCHA:

Offense:
DU #2 3.43 gpg
UW #9 2.71 gpg

Defense:
DU #5 2.82 gpg
UW #6 2.96 gpg

Penalty Minutes:
DU #1 15.9
UW #9 13.0

Power Play:
DU #1 24.1
UW #8 19.1

Penalty Kill:
DU #6 81.0
UW #12 73.8

Special Teams Net:
DU #3 +5
UW #11 -7

So it looks like Wisconsin better stay out of the penalty box.

If Rumpel plays this weekend like he did at Mariucci last weekend, this series will be much closer than it should be.

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Who else remembers the last time Wiscosota visited Magnets Arena for the playoffs? (2007) It was not good. Even losing one game this weekend will hurt DU in the Pairwipes...

That's right! Kept us out of the playoffs that year. IIRC, we were the last team out that year. We could find ourselves in the exact same situation this year if we don't find a way to win this series.

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Definitely, and not to beat a dead horse but their style of hockey plays into that as well.

They clog the middle really well and clear the rebounds. I didn't think Rumpel really had to stand on his head because the chances weren't that dangerous for those reasons.

DU sweeps, but it'll be reallllllllllllly close both games.

I feel as though we watched different games this weekend. I think Rumpel had to stand on his head several times throughout the weekend. Saturday night, the score could have easily been 3-0 Gophers after the first period if Rumpel had not had the amazing period that he did. I do not deny that we clog the middle really well, but the Gophers had some opportune chances that were stonewalled.

Totally agree. My brother said at the game on Friday, "Rumpel is just standing on his head" and I didn't really think so. I thought their D as a whole shut down the Gophers' offense. But Rumpel did make some very opportune saves, particularly on Friday night, IMO.

The Gophers, at times this year, have been very good at shooting the puck directly into the chest/stomach of the opposing goalies. As I said above, Rumpel did make some opportune saves, but sconnie D as a whole can make it easy on goaltenders when they are on. I thought Rumpel was good, but not spectacular. I agree with goldy's fixing of my initial post with the addition of "sconnie D".:)

I played goal for over 30 years and never once stood on my head. God I hate that expression!

I hope this series is televised, easily the best matchup of the week.

I wouldn't count on it. At this time last year, Craig Smith was coming back and Jordy Murray is no where near the player Zengerle is. Hopefully Zengerle is not a Swiss surname, but I know of one scout that was in Madison looking at McCabe that came away impressed with Zengerle. Zengerle will have oppurtunities. Hopefully he likes the makeup of the team (which with the growing pains a young team went through this year and adding good talent like Zullnick, Kerdelis, & Withchow has him as excited as I am for next year) and maybe is a legit scholar (most guys are within striking distance of a degree in year 3 if they are serious about that sort of stuff).

Just losing Schultz will be a huge adjustment for Sconnie next season.

Puck moving Dmen are worth their weight in gold because they can deliver saucer passes to the weak side which is practically they the only way to manufacture goals in college hockey these days.
