WCHA Final Five Quarterfinals - BSU vs. UMD: Time to make some top hats!

Re: WCHA Final Five Quarterfinals - BSU vs. UMD: Time to make some top hats!

If it wasn't for BSU playing the team with the most favorable playoff match-up for them they would not be here. UMD had to play through the hottest team in the WCHA and the team no one wanted to play.

Having personally seen UNO play BSU eight (8!!!) times in the last year (we had a home series against them towards the end of last season besides the 6 times we played them this year) and, both of their games with UMD this year, as well, I have hard time handicapping this one. Stylistically, I thought UMD was enough like UNO that this match-up might present some problems for UMD, too, much like it did/has for UNO. Statistically, one of the things that strikes you about BSU is how good a team they are defensively, yet they only finished 10th in the standings, despite only allowing 94 goals. Only North Dakota allowed less in the WCHA this season. My dad always said good defense beats good offense every time and UNO has the bite marks to prove that adage, at least, in their case (do Beavers bite?). I note that both UMD/BSU games this season were overtime stints (in Bemidji) so UMD looks to have had some "issues" with them as well. I'd expect UMD to come out on top, but I would not underestimate the playoff experience BSU has, having been to the FF year before last. They still have fifteen guys on the roster from that team! I don't expect BSU to win, but I would not be shocked if they did, by any stretch. Their goalie was otherworldly against us. The best goal tending I saw by ANY goaltender this season.

I fully expect Bakala to come back to earth this weekend. Which reminds me that his mom's name is Ursula. Seriously. Ursula? HAHA.

At least she doesn't wear army boots like your mom does. :D

I believe that wcha.com will have a live video feed for free. They did for the Women's tournament and they were supposed to have it up for the men's as well.

No. WCHA.com will only have the audio feed for the Final Five. FSN (and Fox College Sports) is the only place for video...

Re: WCHA Final Five Quarterfinals - BSU vs. UMD: Time to make some top hats!

See, you keep talking about this shortsightedness, and how it's been in "motion" for years. No, it hasn't. You've been basically irrelevant until pretty recently. You can brag all you want about your titles outside of D-I, but to be honest, they don't count. That would be like UMD's football team going D-1 next year, and saying that we are a quality program with many banners because we've won the D-II championship. Newsflash, anything less than D-I in hockey doesn't matter. Heck, in any sport it doesn't matter. So, you can brag all you want about your couple of NCAA births and wins, but in reality, they are just wins other schools get to make fun of St. Cloud with.

You left out one key component in your point about the UMD football team. Say UMD football makes a BSC bowl after going D1. That would be quite an accomplishment which I would say BSU did by making the frozen 4. Like it or not they are a relevant team now that will play your squad tough. Will the beavers advance? I hope so but they will have a tough time doing so. But they've been in this spot before except on the national stage, so they know what to expect.

Does anyone know if this will be on the radio in the Minneapolis area? I have a dentist appointment and would like to listen to it instead of the drilling.

I hate beavers, but these ones are orange and black, so I'll cheer for them.

Wow, I guess we know the University of Minnesota, Duluth fans will be carrying the "Minnesota" fan mantra into the new era of the WCHA. :)

Hey, don't drag us down. Most of us are on your side. :p

Beware of the Green on St. Patrick's day. Oh, and drink many beers.

Maybe you should try getting a win against North Dakota before you cock off about your little team.

Thanks for the recognition. Bakala kept us in games all season long. When he's on he's on, much like the UAA wins over the Gophs last weekend. Good goaltending can take you along ways. Can't wait until 3:37 today, may have to find a place to hide here at work and clock out after the first period.

The Rivalry
One of the Beavers’ most consistent Division-I opponents, BSU has clashed with Minnesota Duluth in each season since making the jump to NCAA Division I (1999-2000). Although UMD holds a 19-9-1 record in the all-time series and skated out of Bemidji, Minn. with a win and a tie Oct. 29-30, BSU is 7-4-1 in the last 12 meetings.

UMD is 14-9-1 overall. Stats are fun to change.

Also UMD is undefeated in their last two games against BSU.

Not sure who I want to see on Friday--Connolly&Connolly&Fontaine or hot backstop Bakala:confused:

The difference is that there are 120 D-I football teams. It would be like UMD playing in a conference with the school of the blind, the school of the deaf, and the school for paraplegics, and getting an auto bid.
