Wcha 24 25

First league games of the season are behind us. The season started off with a bang!

I assume it's just a coincidence, and not a reference or "dig", but the phrase "...with a bang" has a place in Wisconsin sports history.

In 2010, the #1 Ohio State football team came to Madison to play a nationally televised Saturday night game at Camp Randall. Tons of hype, ESPN Game Day in town, etc. And a receiver named David Gilreath took the opening kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown. Wisconsin proceeded to pull off the upset, 31-18.

The Badger radio play-by-play guy Matt LePay (himself an Ohio State alum) made the famous call of the play "And this game is underway with a BANG!"

The play and the radio call is part of a "hype" video that gets played in the stadium before every home game.

I must admit that mentally, I was too quick to write off UMD, assuming that the 'Dogs would dip while adjusting to a new coach (who's obviously not entirely new to the team). Coaches are always "excited" by their incoming class, but Caitlin Kraemer has already demonstrated why Laura Schuler is beyond the usual cliches when anticipating her career at UMD. Favored Wisconsin, Ohio State, and yes, even Minnesota fans are excited by our teams, but I think we're all going to have to work for our league points. It won't always show up in the standings, but I think that all of the contenders are going to have to grind it out every week, and I expect that increase in difficulty will extend beyond the top half of the league. I'm interested to see what coaches like Shari Vogt and Amber Fryklund can do now that they are in charge. It's been awhile since the WCHA had four women as head coaches, and it should be a great season!

Excited to be the 3rd or maybe the 4th best team in the WCHA? Heck, there is so much excitment for the tunnelers that the season thread is buried on the 2nd page.

Minnesota got one vote to win the WCHA in the coaches poll. It would be pretty darn interesting to know from who. But they got one vote.

The apathy you refer to seems to have extended to the arena attendance. I could name 4 season ticket holders who have not renewed for this year. A shame I think, for the quality of the hockey in the WCHA. I plan to get the new St. Thomas thread going before further ventures on the Gopher thread.

Johnson seems likely as TimothyA says but what if the muzzinator did it just for spite since their biggest rival now is the sinners?

Or the St Thomas coach really thinks Minn will win. Or it was a mistaken, or ... twelve other possibilities.

That's why it would be interesting to actually know.

I can see that 100%. I can see her being spiteful after the 1-0 loss a few years ago, plus she used to be one of them, so she has a soft spot for the rodents. She coined the phrase "better dead than red."

Not only did UMD sweep on the road, but they narrowed the sog deficit from 14/40 to 30/39. They doubled their sog total in a game where you'd think that other team would have been keen to erase a bad taste. Instead they got a lot more of it. What is closer to the truth? Is UMD at the assumed level of the former #1 team or is the former #1 team more at UMD's assumed level?

St Cloud did sweep the woodsters, but the woodsters too narrowed the sog deficit from 18/41 to 22/35.

This week:
UM at UCONN - Can we say a battle of heavy hitters since UCONN is tabbed to win Hockey Easy Conference again?
tosu at BSU - Hang onto your whatevers, is the fur going fly?
Woodsters at UW - more goals than shots anyone? Nope, UW has a lot of game inexperienced F's playing.
Cuse at UMD - Like your OJ with skin and all?

U of Manitoba at St. Cloud
MSU at U of Manitoba
U of Manitoba at Tommies

Maybe someone should do a welfare check on Hockeybuckeye and Sierra ... noticeably absent the last few days. The OSU thread has even dropped to page 2.

It has been brought to my attention that UW is returning more goal scoring and total points than ever before in the history of the program, so maybe there is hope for my favorite chant to get some use.
