WCHA 21-22 Season

Gophers want to "Get back, get back
Get back to where they once belonged"

Buckeyes: "You think so? Think again!"

I think it could get intense!

The song that's been in my head since yesterday is Johny Cash, "I don't like it, but I guess things happen that way..."

:-o

Well...it's seven minutes into the MN-OSU game. Were the Gophers planning on playing any offense today? Maybe put a shot on net or something. Just thinking outside the box here.

When did people stop attending Gopher women hockey games? Yesterday's crowd was not very good, and today looks worse. Is it s COVID hangover thing?

What a great game and great production. Looking forward to OT!

1 vs 2 in the country, we are spoiled as fans today.

Does Julie Friend work in media? I think she’s doing a nice job with the color. Grates a little bit when she calls Ohio State “Ohio”, but oh well.

Women’s hockey has always been small time compared to women’s soccer or basketball. Having Sloane Martin on the call (crossover from pro women’s basketball coverage) is awesome and provides some hope that women’s hockey is elbowing its way into the main stream of women’s sports.

Not to mention the fact this playoff package was included with the reg season package (unlike the CHA). Just impressive all around.

Well, better than a chance...OSU scores very early on the PP in OT and wins. And the Muzzinator continues to have the Gophers number.

Don't know what Friend does now full time, but she has done color commentary on the MN Girls HS Tourney in recent years. As for Ohio, she was a player at SCSU, and around the league, everyone says, "Duluth, Bemidji, Mankato, etc." And Ohio. Once you've said Ohio State at the top of the show, Ohio is unique and everybody knows what team you're talking about. It's actually closer to being a thing in a game like yesterday where both teams are "University of Minnesota." However, there is no more sure way to sound like you don't know anything about the WCHA than to start saying, "The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities." I went to UMD, and we all knew who people meant when you said Minnesota. Sorry for the lack of precision, but that's just how teams are known around the WCHA.

Perhaps if you couch it as a WCHA thing it makes sense and in fairness I don’t know how WCHA people refer to the school. In Ohio we’d say Ohio is a different school.
I was thinking of it as a B1G ten production between B1G ten teams and in that regard I would’ve expected Ohio State. Nonetheless a very nice job by Friend and thanks for the response. I had recognized her name as she played a game or 2 for the Whitecaps recently and of course I googled to see where she played college. As I think I’ve said before it is nice to see the development of the sport to a point where we are seeing alums in these off ice roles or crossover between pro and college media involvement etc.

It also jars me when I hear the Gopher players refer to them as "Ohio"!! (and I live in Minnesota!)

Muzzy used to call them "Ohio" when she was on the Minnesota staff. I think we all do. Maybe Commissioner Jennifer Flowers makes a point of using proper references. Ironically, some of the student announcers who don't get anything else correct, come from a football/basketball background, so they are more likely to say, "The Ohio State University Buckeyes." Dan Hamman does a good job on the Gophers audio of using "Ohio State." Personally, I only have so many years left to live, so if we're talking women's college hockey and I say, "Ohio," just what other program do you think I could be referencing? The club team of those other Bobcats? At which point, I guess I should also say, "The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Varsity Women's Hockey Program," to remove all doubt that I'm not talking about club hockey. In print, I try to say "Ohio State" or "OSU." As for Friend, I'd rather that she instead worked on not starting and ending so many sentences with "Obviously." It's a minor flaw compared to AJ talking about the bracket reveal and digressing to say Princeton is going to be getting Sarah Fillier back, and she had a breakout Olympics. Wait -- what? Did I miss the Tigers in the bracket somewhere?

I kind of hate to say anything, because big picture, this is so petty. But in the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry, Michigan leaders refer to OSU Sports Teams as "Ohio" as a non-profane form of disrespect. Similarly, Ohio State leaders refuse to use the word Michigan, instead saying things like "The Team Up North" or "Our Rival." Again, disrespect is the intention. Coupled with the somewhat amusing belief that as long as you don't use 4 letter words, you're beyond reproach.

If there's any value in this discussion, it's that people should understand how they're being heard, and choose their words accordingly. Speak in the Wolverine manner, and a Buckeye will hear it as a little jab.

Julie's commentary is a case in point. My reaction was that her "Ohio" references were her mischievous little way of telling Buckeye listeners "We're not Friends." (winking emoticon here)
