WCHA 2023-2024 Calamity Or Calmness?

Apparently you don't know a facetious response when you see one. It was your turn to hit the bait. ;)

We should give gopher fan a break Hockeybuckeye... he/she is going through a lot right now. We should try to be more understanding of his/her feelings... fivehole doesn't know what to do when he/she has sharks on the line. Wink wink (I stole that from Hockeybuckeye) I will say the Golden Posers have the ability to be above average this year. (Wink, wink)

I have a lot of respect for FiveHole, he gave us The Muzzinator name. It's even been used now by broadcast commentators covering our games.
Kudos FiveHole, Kudos!

The Muzzinator by Fivehole!!! I will keep my jocular humor at bay. Maybe. Thank you Fivehole.

OSU will have more NIL money than any other womens hockey program in the country. Now if the University of Georgia started a womens hockey program, then OSU would have some competition. The BIG will eat the small.

Thanks. This makes sense.

CBS Sports recently reported Ohio States football players will be the highest paid in the sport. Once can't help but wonder how much will trickle down to the hockey players. I assume that's public knowledge if you know where to look for the payouts?

A lot of NIL data seems to make assumptions based on fan base and attendance numbers. Hockey doesn't seem to be a big NIL sport. Make sense as you get a bigger impact at an event in front of 100,000 people compared to 400 hundred. Combined women's and mens hockey is a number south of 1% of a total institution's NIL number. It doesn't appear that there are any hockey players are in the NIL top 100 women.

It's over my head but OSU went after the new AD because he's supposedly an NIL guru. He was very controversial at his previous hires but I'm reserving judgement on what he does here but if he doesn't raise Muzerall's salary to match Frosty's and MJ's then that's strike one in my book.

I would be worried that if the gophers have a bad season and that job opens up it might be hard to keep your coach given salary and rink situation as you described it.

I was worried about that scenario and anything's possible but I have it on good authority it's unlikely she would leave anytime soon.

I'd forgotten how much turnover we've had in the WCHA this year until I saw the lineup for the WCHA's Media Day. WCHA Commissioner Michelle McAteer, and new head coaches Laura Schuler, Amber Fryklund, and Shari Dickerman, all of whom have roots in the league that go back many years in other roles, are among the speakers.

It also reminded me of how out of touch I've become, as I don't remember the teams having players participate along with the coach before. Plus, shame on me for not recognizing a couple of names, Bemidji's Alyssa Watkins and Wisconsin's TBA. Although, I probably shouldn't take the list too seriously, because the league sent out an email saying the event was taking place on Tuesday, 9/17, while the schedule shows Wednesday, 9/14, so who knows what season "TBA" might be a remnant of.

Big Ten Media day for football is a long-standing event. Two or three years ago, 'they' added a Media Day with student athletes and coaches for volleyball (it generates 'content' for BTN and for social media). So the BTN-associated WCHA adding one makes sense. I assume there's such a day for men's hockey as well?

It makes sense if the media attendance has improved. At certain points, other than someone from USCHO, there wasn't anyone asking questions of programs that traditionally finish in the bottom half. It's bad enough to subject coaches to that, but players should start their season with such apathy.

Certainly a fair amount of that surrounding the tunnelers these days...

WCHA recruiting update...

Saw this posted on GPL. The tunnelers pick up a commitment for 2026 from Sloane Hartmetz, who plays defense for Shattuck. Interesting, as this is the sister of Hadley Hartmetz who played for bc and slOwSU so you would have thought the muzzinator would have had the inside track here...

Just not slOwSU material obviously. Thank heavens she allows losers like UW and UM to sign up her rejects.

There was a poster here (or on the Wisconsin thread?) who was saying that somebody at Shattuck was 'bad mouthing' OSU or Muzzeral or some such, and it was going to affect recruiting. I should look it up to be more accurate, but...

If true, I don't think there has been any negative impact on our recruiting. Three of our incoming freshmen are Shattuck girls who were quite taken with Nadine and what she's done here.
