Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I haven't seen this pop up here, but the Alaska House had proposed to eliminate athletics at UAF and UAA: http://www.adn.com/article/20160220/wilson-would-slash-1000-ua-jobs-disastrous-plan

It sounds like there has been enough outcry to stave this off, but if any of you WCHA brethren don't want to see two of your teams go away, send an email to Tammie Wilson. University budget close-out is tomorrow at 7:00 PM Alaska time.

Got an email to post? I'd have never gone to Alaska to visit if it wasn't for your hockey programs and will gladly let her know that.

From the Face Off Club:

Representative Wilson has
asked the other subcommittee members to submit amendments to her proposal
by noon on Tuesday. On Wednesday from 7:00 -7:30 p.m., the subcommittee
will take up the proposal and any amendments, and pass a final
recommendation on to the House Finance Committee.

Subcommittee members are interesting in knowing what you think of this
proposal. If you would like to send comments to members prior to the
meeting, here is their contact information:

Representative Tammie Wilson, Chair ( rep.tammie.wilson@akleg.gov )
Representative Jim Colver ( rep.jim.colver@akleg.gov )
Representative Neal Foster ( rep.neal.foster@akleg.gov )
Representative Paul Seaton ( rep.paul.seaton@akleg.gov )
Representative Liz Vasquez ( rep.liz.vazquez@akleg.gov )
Representative Andy Josephson ( rep.andy.josephson@akleg.gov )
Representative Adam Wool ( rep.adam.wool@akleg.gov )

You also can contact the House member who represents you and express your
concerns, to be passed on to the subcommittee or to the caucus. If you know
who your representative is, you can get contact information here:

Gang, how can those of us in the Lower 48 help? I doubt that your lege gives a crap what Alabama thinks of athletics.

Tourism. With the oil running out it may be the last thing we have. You start talking about how you'll never visit and they'll listen.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

The committee had its hearing tonight and decided to preliminarily set the UA system budget at $300m. That's $12m more than the Wilson plan, but still a $51m cut from last year's funding. It of course has plenty of more debates and committees (because government) to go through before a vote, but things still seem bleak from 3,000 miles away.

What's stunning to me is that they don't just want to cut athletics —*they want to cut research. UAF does some solid stuff.

Yeah, that surprised me too. In many ways, thats much worse than cutting athletics.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

The best hope is it still has to go through the Senate, which is typically friendlier to UA.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

From my view cutting "research" means eliminating a lot of grad students from campus who are likely attending for little or no cost and focusing on undergrads who pay tuition to help bring in more money. Although, one would wonder if the lost money from corporations would result in a net gain. Corporations are not going to send money to campus and get nothing in return.

I'm sure these are the "shock and awe" budget numbers and what they actually approve will be much higher, resulting in fewer cuts. If they MUST cut sports, it would make sense to cut different sports at each school. Don't just wipe them all out. cutting athletics would also be a huge blow to the social experiance of college life. This layout below is just an example as I have no idea who is better in each sport or might have better facilities / program in place.
Ryan

UAF
men’s hockey
women’s volleyball
men’s and women’s cross country
coed rifle

women’s swimming
men’s and women’s basketball
men’s and women’s Nordic skiing

UAA
men’s and women’s basketball
men’s and women’s Nordic and Alpine skiing
men’s and women’s track and field
women’s gymnastics

men's hockey
women’s volleyball
men’s and women’s cross country

Except if you keep athletics at UA_ and UAA they need to compete in 10 sports each to maintain DII status and Title IX plays a role in that as well.
