WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

In this week's USCHO poll, Mankato has 11 first place votes to UMD's 5 first place votes, but Mankato is in 3rd and UMD in 2nd. How does that happen? Is there some criteria other than votes that they use?

More second place votes (or third, or fourth, etc.) than the Mavericks to make up the difference in first place votes.

Interesting, since Mankato did marginally better in their games against the Gophers and Bemidji than UMD did.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Wait, I just went and looked, and it's Boston U. that's in second place with five first place votes, not UMD. Duluth stayed 7th.

It's time to update things a bit! Still not much time for spreadsheets — it's proposal time at work — but here is the story in the league at this moment.

Only one position changed, as LSSU crept up to tied with UAH while an idle Seawolves squad held firm.

· BG's road to #2 is a little tougher, especially with Tech looking strong in comebacks over Alaska (although at some point you have to stop setting up comebacks).
· Ferris State's hold on 4th place is looking more likely assuming everyone stays healthy (especially CJ Motte) and they keep playing about as well as they have (i.e., .500 hockey). For all the amazingness that Bemidji has pulled off of late, they're still under .500 for the season and at .406 in league play. (I know, SOS, all the stuff I normally evaluate, etc. This is a zeroth-order look. Bit me, Beavs, it's been a long few days.)
· LSSU beating BG was definitely a shocker, even with Defiel playing as well as he has, but they didn't leapfrog UAH in the standings, and UAH has just as many league wins in two fewer games.
· UAA should want to schedule UAF for the remainder of the year. Unfortunately, they go to Northern this weekend (no comment), to Mankato the next, host Tech after that, go to Bemidji, host BG, and host UAF. Holy smokes. I can't see more than two or three wins in there, and that gets them to just 16, and UAH and LSSU would have to get just one or two.
· It's time for me to validate that tiebreakers haven't changed.

GFM <— going to go get coffee and think about some spreadsheets.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Sioux Sports has their "What If" calculator up. Here is what I came up with using my Green colored glasses

MSU
BG
Tech
Ferris
BSU
Alaska
NMU
UAH
LSSU
UAA

That would end up leaving both Alaska schools out of the playoffs. There would be two killer road trips with LSSU going to Mankato and Ferris/Bemidji playing somewhere (I actually had the two teams tied and splitting head to head). Otherwise you have Huntsville at Bowling Green and Northern at Tech. Pretty decent playoff setup.

So the first year the AK teams play either other in the playoffs, the next year they both miss the playoffs. Hmmmm... Don't tell me the league treasurer isn't pushing some buttons behind the scenes... Cost Containment - WCHA style... Don't go to Alaska for any post-season reason.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I foresee the 'Cats on the road for the quarter finals. BGSU looks to be where I would pencil them in at. @MTU might be the easier road to St. Paul though.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

It does look almost certain that a number of positions - if not the majority - will not be determined until the final weekend of the regular season again.

A warning to all teams (except Fairbanks, of course) - drop points at your own peril down the stretch.

I tweeted much the same thing. I remember when I had hopes that UAH would sweep at Bemidji and try to get past Northern and into the 4/5 slot. Dangit, I wanted to get to the X.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I am enjoying this year of playing non-like minded teams. a little independent thinking never hurt anyone! :)

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Tech and MSU are really separating themselves with 8-10 games to go.

I can't wait for that series at the end of February!

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I could see a pretty easy scenario that Bemidji gets in to the dance. They are playing well and it's very possible they win the WCHA tourney. It's iffy for them to get home ice, but they might just get there as well..

and this is pretty interesting. I can attest that most of the ivy schools over recruit and that BC and a few others in the east definitely do not abide by the agreement. Now ad in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and it's getting to be a problem.

I haven't seen the treasurer, commish, or anyone but the players on the ice playing for either Alaska or UAA.

Time for this week's update. I'm finishing that proposal, and I'm sick, and ... yeah, excuses.

· The league is currently sorted on winning percentage, which wasn't the case earlier in the year when games-played was farther out of whack (hello, BG).
· Mankato and Tech are officially in the WCHA playoffs, as none of the bottom four teams (counting Alaska as ineligible) can pass them at this point.
·*BG can make that three teams if they sweep Ferris this weekend.
· UAA fans thoroughly disappointed with this season should note that they have games in hand on the two teams above them and only need to leapfrog one. In Mantha you should trust.
· Northern's lead in points is mollified by their games-played disadvantage. Throw a blanket over that trio and let them fight it out.
· The league really is three trios: the three at the top, the three in the middle, and the three scrumming to be first round chum in Mankato and Houghton.
· By KRACH, those trios are 1 Mankato-5 Tech-9 BG, 24 Bemidji-28 Northern-35 Ferris, and 42 Anchorage-43 Huntsville-45 Lake.

No time for best/worst just yet.
