Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important
I doubt you could get either of the Alaska schools to go along with it since they are paying about half the cost of the tr
Well, if teams are doing one set of flights and then transit between Anchorage and Fairbanks, it should decrease the cost of the trip —*especially if you can get both schools that are doing the double that year to do it in the same week span. The Alaska schools could rightly ask for a decrease in their support of the trip.
I mean, let's fake numbers here:
Standard trip:
Flights: $11k
Lodging: $3k
Meals: $3k
Ground Transportation: $2k
Total: $20k
So the year that you do the double — how many teams do that again? — you're spending $40k on travel.
But if you can get away with being up there for a week, it could look like:
Flights: $11k
Lodging: $6k
Meals: $6k
Ground Transportation: $6k
Total: $29k
And since the formula for the trip costs to UAH is based on taking the farthest non-Alaska league trip and replacing it with Huntsville[sub]1[/sub], you could apply the same logic here. Instead of each Alaska school kicking in $10k for each of those two trips, you say, "You each only pay $5500," because you've saved $11k on the cost of the trip. Does the $4500 offset the drop in attendance for Tue/Wed against weekend games? Probably not, but if the Alaska schools can get the same kind of deal on trips to the Lower 48, maybe it makes sense.
For teams doing the Alaska double in one week, give them a league week off the weekend after the travel.
It's worth talking about. Dave, I'm sure that you have better access on numbers for this — my numbers are atmospheric extractions.

[1] I think that the worst league trip would have to be Lake Superior to Bemidji State, as there are no major airports within 5-6 hours of either city in winter driving conditions. Actually, Sault Ste. Marie to Huntsville by bus is probably an easier trip given that you're coming south the whole way.
