WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

You may wish to check that $11K figure on flights. Mine was over $1100 alone and that's before you add baggage.

But don't you also fly separately from the team? I would imagine that talking directly with the airline that there would be some savings in booking 24 guaranteed passengers versus just one who booked via Travelocity. ;) I think when I spitballed some travel numbers with you two years ago, 20k was the estimate used.

Geoff, via Google.com/flights I can book a flight from Huntsville to Anchorage for their first weekend in January at $867, leaving either Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. Bumping Google/Flights up to 6 Adults (the max their program searches) gives me $5,257 round trip for six ($877/person). Twenty four tickets would run (using their math) $21,028.

Like I said, I was just doing a thought experiment using likely-bogus numbers. Higher flight costs make this make even more sense. If my flight estimate is off by half, then you're really improving things:

Standard trip:
Flights: $22k
Lodging: $3k
Meals: $3k
Ground Transportation: $2k
Total: $31k
x 2 trips: $62k

One long trip:
Flights: $22k
Lodging: $6k
Meals: $6k
Ground Transportation: $6k
Total: $40k

That's a $22k savings. If Lower 48 schools are paying something like $15,500 per trip (assuming their Alaska university host pays half the freight), you could have them paying $20k for just one trip (assuming that both schools split the cost of the total trip). That's a savings of $11k for the Lower 48 schools doing the double, and the Alaska schools would save that, too. Does that offset the attendance hit? Probably not, but a smart university can make this once-a-year event a huge thing marketing-wise.

Booked with team. Same price. Marquette to Anchorage and Fairbanks to Marquette. Left Nov 19. Returned Nov 30. Your lodging prices were also a bit on the low side for Anchorage, although UAF does pick up the rooms there. You also need to add baggage to those costs. And the fact that no one only has 24 in their traveling party. I believe we had 27 not including me. 22 players/ 2 coaches/ equip/trainer/doctor. Even at the $21K you have, the Anchorage subsidy falls well short of that and that price doesn't inlude baggage, meals, ground transportation and the cost of ice time.

I doubt you could get either of the Alaska schools to go along with it since they are paying about half the cost of the tr
That should definitely get a hell no from the Alaska schools.

Especially on the road trip side of it. Travel Tuesday, play Friday-Saturday, travel again Sunday, play Tuesday-Wednesday? No thanks.

The Tuesday-Wednesday thing could lead to exclusivity against the other leagues..Could it also attract a national TV deal?

I wouldn't give it an unqualified no, because you can make the analog to mid-major D-I football conferences taking mid-week games just to get some recognition. That said, the college hockey landscape probably doesn't support it.

Alaska schools ought to just go p*** up a rope...problem solved.

In case your sarcasm meter is non-functional, I'll tell you I DON'T really mean this.
I just wondered how many of them would slam me before they read this part.

Wishing all fans a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season!

Not much different from what pro teams do. However, I think the academic side would suffer without the usual down time during a week.

The entire team flies direct from Marquette?
Direct vs. non stop vs. change of planes etc.
It's all airline lingo.
And I know you know there's no Marquette (pick your Alaska city) Alaska flights. Unless it's chartered and that's not happening.
Or maybe you started imbibing the eggnog without inviting Alaska Hockey and I.
