Well, Dan's pretty clear that he's a Mankato guy. It would be interesting to do an analysis of attendance at VWC pre- and post-BTHC.

Ciskie already did a few. In fact, it was probably the most useful thing he did yesterday.

I wish that trend was true across the conference. UAF is down about 15% since entering the WCHA. UAA is down too.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

Winning sure has helped those programs, eh?

Yeah, that's the other major factor to consider. Based on my experience with looking at UAH box scores in the past and other studies I've seen on the topic in the past, attendance gains lags winning by a year. The opposite is also true, although IIRC attendance falls off faster in the face of losing. (There is, of course, a floor of diehards. You can see how many there are in Huntsville.)

That doesn't explain any attendance woes in Alaska given the success of both schools last year, although any depression in Fairbanks may be due to the NCAA problem.

We averaged right around 3,000 the last few years in the CCHA. It went down to 2,500-ish last season, and is similar this year. I don't think the NCAA issue has much to do with it. Our people have noticed, and there are some steps being taken to get people back in the building.

I don't know what UAA's deal is this season, frankly. Their last few home games have been <2,000.

I expected that the UP teams and Ferris would see a bump in home attendance, mostly because they will be playing more games against nearby teams with a lot of shared conferences and history in other sports. Tech/Northern always packs both rinks and now that they will be playing four times, it should bump up the numbers. MTU also had good attendence against Lake State. I think Tech and Ferris is also well attended for both schools. Tech's home attendance was never consistently good for Wisconsin, Denver, CC, UNO, etc, so from a strictly home attendance standpoint, I think the new WCHA has been good for them. That said, I think the loss of the away games at Wisconsin, NoDak, Minn and the Final Five erase the modest home ice attendance gains.

Yeah, the postseason tournament is where the league absolutely feels it.

Msu's current year is a bit deceiving. We had a record crowd for the first game of the year against umd, not because of umd, but because we hung our firat banner in school history for the final five championship. Very misleading to look at it before the end of the year.

Michigan Tech is also not fair with Michigan making its first trek in 30+ years to Houghton.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

And NMU's numbers are juiced by hosting Wisconsin at the Resch Center in Green Bay (and calling it a home game).

Well, but winning in the previous season generally drives attendance.

That's definitely something else to take into account.

Re: WCHA 2014-15: Semi-colons make things seem important

I would appreciate it if you would funnel any thoughts that you have on WCHA.tv to the extant topic about the wonderful product that we all love to complain about. After some complaints today on Twitter and then an email to the Christmas card that Matt Hodson sent out to the WCHA media contacts, he responded to me and wanted to set up a time to talk on the phone on Wednesday. I'd appreciate it if we can pull our complaints together for me to present to them.

A bit off topic but has the WCHA announced any hotel deals for the Final Five?

I thought they gave away a bunch of tickets for that game

Let's see how we draw for Princeton this weekend with finals week over and break started.
