WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

IMO this season its going to be a fight between SCSU and ND.
Im expected my beloved Badgers to be about in the middle of the pack, but they might surprise people by the time February comes around.
They will be a young team after all the players they lost this summer and the start of the season will likely be ugly, but I think (hope) Eaves will mold them into a pretty respectable team by the middle of the season. At least we still have Gudmanson, who should bring them some leadership and maturity and is a solid goaltender. We've also still got Murray, who is a very good player and now should have the opportunity to grow into a star.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

I didn't think anyone outside of Colorado had an opinion either way on CC and DU.
Well I do. I see DU as the Yankees and CC as the Red Sox (pre 2004). Where one team has won a lot, and the other team has not won championships in over 50 years. Yeah yeah DU I know you won National Titles most recently, and I know CC hasn't won one in a long time. DU fans rag on CC fans and it gets old.

For DU and CC fans, the ragging never gets old. The DU vs. CC rivalry is 60 years old now and fans from both schools have been ragging on each other for all of those years. Over the years, there have been student riots (60s), live animals on the ice (70s) and even huge obscene banners (80s) that have made a mark on the rivalry and that's just the fans.

CC fans have had a lot to cheer about since Don Lucia resurrected the CC program in the mid 1990s. CC has really owned the regular season series vs DU since the mid 1990s and won more Gold Pans than DU since the trophy started in the 90s, and has really excelled in games in DU's Magness Arena, where they seem to play their best hockey.

Denver fans have also had plenty to cheer about, including still having the all-time series lead, crushing CC 6-2 in the in the biggest DU vs CC game of all time in Columbus (the 2005 NCAA Semi-Finals) when DU went on to win the NCAA title, and the fact that Denver has won all of its seven NCAA titles since CC last won one in 1957.

It's among the top 5 rivalries in college hockey.

It gets old sometimes (probably not a great idea to read a DU blog after they beat CC) but that feeling never really lasts.

Can we get a list of your top 10? Top 5 sounds about right. Sometimes I think that sells it a little short but it's hard to argue that it's better than some of the other great rivalries.

IMO, I would put it right around 5.

Here are my top rivalries in no particular order...

UND-Minnesota
Minnesota-Wisconsin
DU-CC
Michigan-Michigan St.
NMU-Tech
BC-BU
Harvard-Cornell
Maine-UNH

Thanks buddy!

I can’t put it below 4 on this list. On this list – I would say between 2 and 4.

UND-Minnesota – Didn’t some drunk North-de-codeines beat the snot out of a Goofs fan two years ago? Bad taste = DQ

Minnesota-Wisconsin – the Goofs can’t have more than one rival – it’s not fair! Also – the concept of BTHC sux nutz!!!

DU-CC – it’s CC-PU – get it straight!

Michigan-Michigan St. – It could be legit – again – BTHC – sux pux!

NMU-Tech – You could also mention Tech and da Germans…

BC-BU – I think they take the cake. I don’t like it but have to live with it :o

Harvard-Cornell – one word – wankers… REALLY? REALLY?

Maine-UNH - Who??????[/QUOTE]

Life is not fair. The Gophers have more rivalries than anybody else in the country.:D

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Tech-NMU doesn't belong in the Top 10 anymore, especially with its non-conference status. In fact, I'd put the rekindled Denver/UND rivalry, Clarkson/SLU, and maybe even the UND/BC postseason clashes ahead of it.

UND needs to win a couple games against BC to be a real rivalry... :(

When you talk rivalries between Minnesota North Dakota and Wisconsin they are all about the same North Dakota has a huge rivalry with Wisconsin too not alot of good feelings between any of these 3 teams

Why? MN has historically owned UW, its still a pretty big rivalry

While UND and UW don't like each other, in that threesome of evil, its the pairing that is easily the most civil. Maybe its because MN is the geographical buffer or just proof that the Gophers are the most hated college hockey team, but UND-UW < MN-UND or MN-UW.

And I'd agree that the UND-DU rivalry is undervalued; boy is there some bad blood there.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

In my opinion great rivalries are founded upon 4 factors, listed in what I think is the order of their importance:

1. Geographical proximity
2. Competition in multiple sports
3. Frequent match ups
4. Strength of programs/chance to play for all the marbles, and even better, to play against the rival.

That's why rivalries such as BU-BC, Michigan-Michigan St., UNH-Maine, are so good.

It also explains why UND has a bigger rivalry with Minnesota than it does with say a DU or Wisconsin. They obviously have frequent meetings with all 3, and all of those teams have traditionally had a chance to win it all, and even win it all playing one of the other teams. But the proximity between MN and UND, the intermingling of alumni and students in both locations is what creates the air of a rivalry. It's also why many MN fans consider Wisconsin to be their bigger rival due to the chance to play the Badgers in other sports.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Can we get a list of your top 10? Top 5 sounds about right. Sometimes I think that sells it a little short but it's hard to argue that it's better than some of the other great rivalries.

1. BU vs BC - This one goes back over 90 years, and the schools are only four miles apart on the same streetcar line. In 2005, Sports Illustrated called it the best rivalry in all of sports. I don't know if it's that, but it's the biggest we have.

2. Minnesota vs North Dakota - this is a 60+ year border war that really heated up in the '70s and has stayed there since. Probably the rivalry with the widest following.

3. Harvard vs Cornell - It's cooled a little of late, but these two have been cracking heads on the ice since 1910. Pretty sure this where we first saw chickens and fish thrown on the ice in the early '70s.

4. Denver vs Colorado College - This is a 60+ year state supremacy battle among two private school rivals that has seen some really intense fan behavior in an otherwise mellow state. This one had a full-out student riot in the mid 60s that forced a cancellation for a while. More recently, live on-ice animals and the occassional obscene banner replaced the student riots.

5. Minnesota vs Wisconsin - As intense a rivalry as you will get, the reason this border war isn't ranked higher is because it only really dates back to the Herb Brooks vs Bob Johnson hatred of the 1970s. Another with a big following.

6. Michigan vs Michigan State - Another rivalry that is a battle for the state, this one peaked in the Cold War in 2001 in front of 77,000 people. This also the result of a football spillover with many casual fans.

7. Clarkson vs St. Lawrence - This one is the best rivalry game you've never seen. Two small town North Country schools about 10 miles apart have been going at it for a very long time.

8. North Dakota vs Wisconsin - This one is remembered for the "Water Bottle" full tilt, all-out player brawl in the '80s that spilled off the ice and into the Beer Garden at Dane County Coliseum. Lots of people follow this one.

9. Maine vs UNH - A relatively recent arrival among the great rivalries, this one has all the hallmarks of two states' biggest athletic teams and statewide followings going at it.

10. UAA vs UAF - Another rivalry you've never seen, this one can get intense, as both schools want to be the flagship campus of Alaska, and these are also the only two real cities in the state.

Honorable mention:

Army vs Royal Miltary College (RMC) of Canada
Army vs Air Force
Northeastern vs BU or BC
Denver vs North Dakota
Minnesota vs all other Minnesota schools
Michigan Tech vs Northern Michigan
Lake Superior State vs NMU
Miami vs Ohio State
Ohio State vs Michigan
RPI vs Union
RPI vs Clarkson
Colgate vs Cornell
Harvard vs Yale
Vermont vs UNH
Cornell vs BU
