WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Speaking of respect, A well done to Michigan Tech, who won their first game of their Euro tour tonight. The Huskies beat ESV Kaufenburen in Bavaria (Kaufenbueren is a second division German Pro team) on ESV's home ice, 3-0.

75,000 posts? Really?

Brent, you know you're my brother but that is kinda funny considering the timing. :D

But what suddenly vaults the Gophers from 6th in a 10 team league to top 5 in a 12 team league?

As if you'd analyze them objectively anyway. ;)

Moving up one spot considering the two additions are BSU and UNO isn't exactly that bold of a prediction. That said I'm torn. I really think they have enough talent if they play like a team and stay healthy, but if they play individually and suffer injuries they could easily go as low as so many seem to predict. [edit] The play of Kangas will go a long way in this thought process as well.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

It just struck me that that old "finish in the top three" mindset goes out the door in a twelve team WCHA.

If you advance past the first WCHA playoff round you need to finish top two to guarantee that you won't have to play on Thursday.

Ouch.

From WCHA.com:

Does that "pre-set bracket" thing mean that Minnesota no longer must play on Friday night (and never afternoon)? Or will it just work out that the bracket is pre-set that way.

The Minnesota rule is stil in there. Meaning the Gophers will alway play the night game on Thursday and Friday.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

It is just laughable to me that Bemidji State fans think that DU will finish 8th or 9th, when there are around five players on the DU roster who may be playing in the NHL in two to three years. :D

NHL potential...in 2-3 years...has nothing to do with how a player will perform this year in the WCHA. :)

That said, I agree with you that there is no way that DU finishes 8th or 9th in the league. I have them closer to 4-6 range depending on how well their offense/goaltending does.

DU had INCH's #2 recruiting class in the nation last season and every one of those players will be back this season.

The 2010 recruiting class is better than 2009.

INCH's recruiting class ranking is done in the preseason. When looking at the freshmen from last year on DU, only Donovan and maybe Shore stood out as "key" players. Everyone will have to step up on DU's roster to replace the losses of Rakhshani, Ruegsegger, Colborne, Wiercioch, Cheverie, etc. The addition of Bennett and Zucker will definitely help, but asking them to replace the scoring from the above players (minus Cheverie) is a bit much.

That said, anything can happen in the WCHA, and Gwoz will have DU tough as always, so nothing is certain. :)

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

OK lets just talk college hockey.

DU has averaged 24.9 wins per season over the past 10 seasons.

DU had INCH's #2 recruiting class in the nation last season and every one of those players will be back this season.

The 2010 recruiting class is better than 2009.

Top-seeded DU was eliminated by fourth-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology in 2010.

FYP :D :p

Is it just me or could Michigan Tech get a leg up on the season by taking this tour? I could see them using this a springboard to getting off to a huge start for the first four weeks of the season at least.

I hope so. UND doesn't see Tech until March 2011.

They will certainly see some advantage, although they spend the first couple of weeks playing out of conference.

Incoming freshmen aren't aren't allowed to go, so that hurts, but yes - playing pro teams in Europe helps generate bonding and experience.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

Either it will give them some help, or it will hurt them by getting used to playing hockey without getting hit.

Re: WCHA 2010 Predictions Thread

What about Freshmen that are already enrolled in Summer School?
I don't know what the rule says, but I'm 99% sure that none of the freshmen made the trip, except for Gordic, who is technically still in his first season due to a medical redshirt, but played a couple games last season.

Interesting. Thanks.

Teams that make the Frozen Four get an extra month of sanctioned practices, as opposed to teams that are eliminated from the 1st round of the league playoffs. It usually helps the team team the following season. The same is true of NCAA football teams that make bowl games.

I'd like to think so, but I have little in the way of expectations anymore.

Either it will give them some help, or it will hurt them by getting used to playing hockey without getting hit.

They've actually been forcing their opponents to play pretty physical. ;)

Yeah, bb_dl is correct. None of the true freshmen were permitted to make the trip, because none of them are technically members of the team yet.
