It all depends on the criteria one uses to rank rivalries. Current hatred? Geographic Proximity? School similarity? Historic tradtiion? Length of time? Stakes played for? Fan behavior? Statewide followings? Largest fan exposure? Coaches who hate each other? Pageantry and school pride? Cultural superiority?
UAA/UAF is a great rivarly for state supremacy, school superiority and cultural differences within Alaska.
But for me, I prefer my great rivarlries to have at least 30 or 40 years of animosity built up, and even better when it's 50--100 years, so that the history can tell a deeper story, not just more recent hatred. Others may think that a long history is less important, and that current hatred counts the most. That's what makes these discussions fun.
Some feel UAA vs. UAF is the "best" college hockey rivalry because of the inherent sociocultural antagonism that is historically and psychologically embedded in Alaskan culture.
