Vermont 2023/24: Stuck in the Wieds

Hopefully the Saturday effort is an indication that the 'play 60 minutes' mantra is getting through. The league needs to do something about the lengthy video reviews. I think they need to move to the NHL model where it is a penalty for a failed challenge.

Yeah I agree the video reviews are getting old. I've never seen so many challenges and they really should follow the NHL model. I'm not minding the split every weekend but hopefully they can pull a sweep here and there. With LIU coming up, hopefully they can achieve it.

Nice effort Saturday. I agree with other post - close if not there to a full game effort. I still would have liked to see a backup goalie in..... But I can admit that Gabe played very well and was big part of win. Too bad he wasn't rewarded with shutout. So, there were 2 key players not suited up. Joel M. and Andrei B. both were scratches. I didn't hear anything about injuries so have to think this was a coach's decision. Steve W. made comments relating to lineup changes coming. While not a huge fan of +/- stats, Joel was -2 and Andrei was -3 on Friday. If this wasn't injury related, then it was definitely message sending related. I thought the entire team had jump and effort was certainly there. Freshman line was moving all night trying to be involved in play and hit everything out there. They were rewarded with goal. I want Joel and Andrei in the lineup just need them playing up to capabilities. It will be interesting to see what decisions are made going forward. I'm sure practice will be a battle this week for lineup positions.

Anyone know what is going on with Maatta and Buyalsky. Haven't played since the first Union game meltdown.
Drei was back in a big way today - 2 primary assists. My guess is injuries and/or illness, Cats have been pretty banged up this year.

I never thought I'd be happy with .500 hockey and basically bang average in the PWR...but here we are. 29th in the PWR at the semester break and some tangible signs of improvement. Power play has been awful but hopefully today starts to turn that around as that (and health) is my only real complaint. Second half is gonna be tough (we haven't played BU, BC, or Maine yet) so hopefully the guys rest up and are ready to rumble.

They're clearly a better team than they've been in quite awhile. I think consistency is an issue still, they'll prone to some let down performances. At the same time they've shown they can give a good game to anyone. They come back with St Thomas(x2), Dartmouth and Northeastern(x2). My hope is they'll be above .500 after that run of games.

RE:Maatta, at the outset of the sunday LIU game, the wvmt announcer simply said he was not in the lineup and did not make the trip to brooklyn w the team. Perhaps its just a lack of press coverage (the Free Press barely covers the team anymore) but it’s frustrating that things like this go unexplained.

Not sure if it was the internet, ESPN+ feed on my tv was an issue too. But agree, nice win. And hope they can build some momentum, as St T is having a decent season.

Nice to get 4 goals against statistically the best goalie in the country. Seems like we're getting a lot more goals from well placed shots and offensive zone pressure. In the past, it seemed like the recipe for beating UVM was have a solid goalie and don't give up odd man rushes. Looks like we're finally overcoming that. Have to like the five game winning streak and balanced scoring. A little concerned with how much we relied on Carriere today. Will need 60 minutes of tight defense to keep things going against the Hockey East elite. Dartmouth and Northeastern are near us in the pairwise. Should be good tests before BU and UNH come in.

We have been saying for years we needed scoring and while we have yet to get that 20 goal guy the team as a whole has made big strides this year

Goals scored per game
2024 3.1
2023 1.9
2022 1.7
2021 1.5

And they did it without sacrificing the defense.

Goals against
2024 2.3
2023 2.7
2022 2.9
2021 3.2

Discouraging loss last night. Dartmouth got more goals against us than they did against Maine, UConn and UNH combined. They had a ton of blocked shots, but it seemed like that was a result of us taking ill advised shots when the shooting lane was blocked. We haven't had many power play goals, but at least, early in the season, we were getting excellent chances. Last night, it looked terrible. No more non-conference games, yet Mangbo and MacKenzie haven't played a minute. Meanwhile, next opponent Northeastern just tied #3 QU. They may be in last place, but they're clearly over their early season difficulties and playing well now.

That third period was unbelievably unhinged. That 4th goal (Miotto's second) might be the worst goal call I've ever seen haha

Gotta be better closing out games and cutting down on the penalties but a win's a win.

Northeastern has no one to blame but themselves for not having a camera that can show the whole blueline, come on replay has been around for years. Maybe spend less money on a huge scoreboard and a few bucks on proper replay cameras. Reminds me of the game I went to at BC not long after the replay rules were started and UVM scored but the refs said they didnt and the BC rink was unable to get the video system to work only later to find out the video clearly showed VT had scored.

As rare as it to see VT score 3 goals so fast was seeing Gabe give up a softie.
