Vermont 2023/24: Stuck in the Wieds

There's been a few commitments:

https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/568366/michael-la-starza
(Says BU but as of yesterday, it's been confirmed he's going to UVM)

And there was one other one I saw pop up on my Instagram story but I can't seem to find it now. Also, anyone know what's up with Matt Cato? He put some decent junior stats but hasn't played a minute. Should be a good test tonight against UMASS. Hopefully we can come away with a split at the very least.

F Yeah!!! When was the last time a UVM team scored 6 goals!! I like this new coach and team! Carrier smooth and in position at all times!!

In a hockey East game Jan 2018 vs Lowell. This team is had 3 straight weeks with one good game and one ugly game. Not being in the basement for a change is nice.

Crazy night for Jens. One even strength one shorthanded and one empty net. For a guy who only came in with one goal pretty impressive night. Can't remember anyone having a goal taken off the board by replay then score a goal seconds later. Poetic justice I quess.

Yeah it's been one terrible game one great one. A lot of fun to watch Saturday night and hopefully they'll be able to string back to back wins sooner than later.

I can’t remember the last season there were any great games played. The great/terrible/great…pattern is pretty common early in the season in college hockey, even with very good teams. I continue to be impressed with this team, and with the new coach. Top 3rd in pairwise, middle of the pack in Hockey East. Pleasantly surprised so far.

They looked great on Saturday. Considering everything that was going on this summer, I'm really excited about this team right now. I almost think they have a chance to go on a run here. Outside of UMASS on December 1st, there are winnable games from now through the end of league play in January. Even the UML matchup on December 3rd seems winnable with how slow the Riverhawks have started. I'm definitely getting ahead of myself, but hey it's been a TOUGH few years.

Good to see them picking up some recruits as well. Michael La Starza is someone who should be able to help them next year. Former BU commit who is putting up solid numbers in the USHL. Max Strand and Gennadi Chaly are also have strong seasons so far.

Agree, La Starza looks like a very solid offensive player who will have a big opportunity to put up numbers if he can do it.

If you had told me that in the AIC game we would give up no goals even strength and kill all of AIC's powerplays I would have assumed we won.

Watching this UMASS game…best coach’s challenge I’ve ever seen; 1-0 UM converted to 1-0 UVM on ensuing PP. Back and forth all game-UVM is matching everything #10 UMASS is bringing. Love it.

2-1 OT win, deserved. Those teams looked totally equal. Coach of the year.

The process part is there, there's chances being created and Gabe has been on a roll this year. If we can figure out the end product...(and the power play, which continues to be mostly poor although they did get the goal tonight. Wieds said in the postgame that it was Madolora that insisted on the challenge, for the record.)

First few minutes we looked awful but once we had that first PP it felt like the rust was gone

Thought we played really well last night. Every bit as well as UMass. Regarding the PP, I really liked the approach last night. Seemed like they were a lot quicker to shoot rather than endlessly passing back and forth on the perimeter.

Not sure how to view this team. Whether Wiedler is just the beneficiary of a team Woodcroft built, or if he's actively doing something to make the team play better? I kinda feel like it's the latter. In terms of style of play, I felt Woodcroft was more or less a continuation of Sneddon. But gotta hand it to Wieds, even in a low scoring win like last night, the team is much more interesting to watch, and they seem to generate a good number of scoring chances.

The one thing that made Miotto's OT goal even better was seeing that the UMass player that failed to cover him was #16, who drew a BS penalty earlier in the game by grabbing a VT player stick into his body then falling down. UMASS got way with that one but got caught twice for Embellishment afterwards. How much practice time do they spend working on flopping because they looked pathetic last night.

Apparently NESN forgot to tell UVM that the start was moved up an hour based on how they played in the first period.

Just started seven consecutive non-league games. Hope we see Mangbo or MacKenzie get some playing time. If we don't, it suggests it's because they're not good enough and we'll have to worry about Carriere burning out in February. Looking at scoring stats through not quite one third of the season, there are some names near the bottom that I would have expected to be much closer to the top. Have to be happy with Jens Richards' production and development.

Jim - I agree, love way Gabe C. has played (up till last night) and now is perfect time to see what the other goalies have. After Friday night's game I'd hope we see a change. Does something else in that if backup comes in and plays a good game. Gabe then has to go into fight mode in practice. It's not assumed he has the net all the time. Also agree regarding some key players not getting it done scoring wise. I still contend Andrei B. is the most skilled player on the team. But something is not right when he's sitting at 0 G 2 A after 10 games played. I can see him pressing and getting frustrated. Also, Maatta needs to be higher than 1G 2A. I know he does a lot of other things to help the team (faceoffs, PK) but he needs to deliver offensively a little more. Like what Richards is doing. All 4 goals Friday night were by defensemen. Need some forward Goals. Disappointing outcome Friday after we had a 3-1 lead. "If" we had swept the weekend we would have been back to .500. Now 3 games under. Tough to claw back.

On Friday the 7 d-men in the lineup had a combined total of 3 goals all season and went on to score 4. What was with both teams skates this weekend??? Never seen so many players fall without any contact before except while watching the kiddie scrimmages between periods.
