Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Better to coach at 18 or 20?

Obviously 20 or every team would be bringing in players at 18. Since almost no one does anymore, it's clear someone found that letting players season for a year or two in a junior league is adventagious.

But there are players you can line up at 17/18... and they do. They just spend a year in juniors to get some ice time, maturity and travel experience before they matriculate.

Here's a good article on it...

http://www.collegehockeydirectory.com/contents/Articles/Why20Old.aspx

Moreover UVM does bring in 1-2 18 y.o. per season. Alex Columbe has already committed and he is 18, he will be here next year as a 19 year old. Considering his birth date, that is as early as he can come...
Haralds Egle will start at UVM at the age of 18.

Bruneteau came as an 18 year old. Paliotta came as an 18 year old...

So UVM is bringing in 1-2 players a year in that age group... they may not be from Quebec and there is a reason for that ... Major Juniors. You can recruit an elite player, tie up a scholarship offer and if they end up panning out as hope they get drafted by a QMJ team and now the University has little time to find a replacement... a scholarship player that is an elite player.

- I'm pretty sure Trey Phillips is a defenceman. A very offensive defenceman at that.

Seems like a much smaller in height and weight recruiting class compared to the typical Sneddon teams. Perhaps moving to faster team style to compete better with the BC's of the world.

Correct, I used the commitment page on the College hockey Inc website that had him listed as a LW. Of note, he was selected as the AJHL MVP this season and was also name the leagues top defensemen.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Interesting the Egle kid...

He dominated with Portland with 22-26-48 in 39 games, which was better then Girgenson's numbers in the EJHL, but hasn't done anything in the USHL.

He was a #1 round draft pick (#8 overall) in the USHL draft.

Injured? Not fitting into their system? I know its a step up, but that is a dramatic drop off.

I believe Anthony DeLuca (?) was the latest example of a kid we recruited and committed from Quebec that ultimately went QMJ.
He had unbelievable stats I seem to remember.

Yes, that was the kid I was thinking of... and a prime example of why UVM no longer recruits 16 & 17 year olds from Quebec.

Here is was Sneddon's take a while back from Ted Ryan's blog

"With most Quebec players opting for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the pool for the U.S. is relatively small. NCAA academic requirements have also made it more difficult for Quebec High school students, who graduate after the 11th grade, to fit in core courses; all U.S. and all other Canadian provinces have four years to complete core courses."

The good players from Quebec go to Major Juniors... Ted actually looked into it and only 9 players in HE were from Quebec.

McCarthy was named to the east regional all tournament team...

Really surprised he hasn't been signed yet...

5 d to replace the 1 they are losing? Someone was lied to or deceived..

That's a lot of incoming shortys. I hope they prove me a fool for wondering why we don't have some 6'+.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Can we ban Catmandoo and his negativity from this thread?

UVM just qualified for the tournament. Yeah, they got manhandled but by a team that probably plays in finals game and gives Minny all they can handle if not winning the NC. 45 other teams behind us that would like to have had this good a year. Pretty nice recovery from rough past three years. And they did that without one of their top players for the entire season (Reynolds). I will take it and be happy for it.

Other comments in response to the below.

Puskarich is a keeper. Anyone that thinks otherwise is insane or just having a real bad day. First UVM HE ROY ever. Most goals for rookie since Perron I believe (nobody else even close). 2nd most goals in HE play behind Gaudreau. I mean give me a break, give credit where due. Even if he does not improve he is our top scoring forward since V Stalburg. And this in his ROOKIE year. Yeah, playing with McCarthy helped but the kid can snipe like nobody we have had on the team since Stalberg and before that since 1997 and he will put up good numbers with a lesser center next year. I think Fallon or Petruzilli will get him the puck next year just fine.

I like Bradley also, agree there. I also think Shaw will be very effective the next few years.

Phillips looks like an enormous recruit and Petruzilli looks very nice also. Privetera will be a nice add to the D also. Add Reynolds back and this is a good team, possibly deeper than the current year version. Also if the Hoffman that played the UML QF series shows up we will win some games we lost this past season as a result of being out goaltended

On adding five D. we were playing five at times this year so I see Privatera and Phillips getting lots of ice with Palliotta, Pattyn and Hamilton. Not sure where Walls falls. Hamilton was a huge liability at times, hopefully not as reliant on him next season or he develops considerably.

Overall i like where the program is headed, good work by Coach and his assistants who are recruiting quite well. Now get on the website and donate to the new arena, that is the most important piece of the puzzle

Palliotta sounds like he is staying. He will be a monster next year.

Go Cats.

Just to add, remember we are also missing one Girgenson. With Reynolds and Girgenson this team would be on the next level that they struggled to reach this year.

I do think the recruiting is coming along nicely and there are some guys that will fill in for the guys we are losing. No one will fill the McCarthy hole, but I think Fallon, Bradley, or Shaw can step up into that role next year and be effective.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Just want to say congrats to the Cats on a good year. Hopefully this is a trend upwards. Also on the fact of 5 D coming in next year seems a little heavy for any team, don't think there is a lot of room for that as all remaining D should be playing as they are all more than capable. Doubt that all these small defencemen are going to be able to make the lineup. Do you honestly think they will sit Juniors or seniors in favor of Freshmen? Hamilton is a good example of a freshmen being overplayed in favor of another player. Sorry if you think his stats say he is better than others but he gives up costly plays and goals and bringing in that many more smaller offensively minded D will cost the team dearly. Like I said before balance is a key on any team. Again good job team and work hard over the summer and come back ready to get back to the tournament.

Did you read something or are you speculating?

Watching the game this weekend, the turn around from last year, the recuits and their projected impact.... I have to wonder how much credit should go to the assistant coaches or, on the flip side, how much Micheletto / Gasparini weren't effective. Snedden is the one to ultimately answer for everything, it's his team, but he can't do everything. I noticed Patrick and Walack active during the game over the weekend. It's not like they were just their for moral support. I felt Paul Goodman was a big loss. UVM used to just dominate the 3rd period and grind people into the ice. I'll never forget watching the way Jamie Sifers beat the crap out of Dan Winnick all game and by the 3rd period he had enough and was short shifting. The team was very well conditioned back then and there was a known issue with the strength/conditioning coach that followed. My point, it takes more than just a great head coach and I believe the team is headed in the right direction.

Hate the Sneddon style? Sorry, did you catch the Gilligan style toward the end of his time? Dump / chase, oh wait, it was more like dump / line change / play D and pray for the other team to make a mistake. Sorry, he's a good dude but it was painful to attend games before Sneddon took over. And his impact was immediate.

I think Sneddon does an good job and beyond that he is very well respected and the program is something that as an alumni I'm proud of. Many (or most) of the students are on the honor roll with legit majors. The ones I've met (McCarthey, Renoyds, Hoffman, Mountian) are nice, respectable, generally cool dudes. I was at UVM for the hazing scandal. I read about the antics and nonsense going on at the end of Jack Parkers career. I'd be willing to bet you Sneddon demands a LOT of this players. The folks that have left (Milo, Stacey, Pachan) are those really people you want to associate with your program anyway? Sure they all were capable of helping the team win games but at what cost to it's reputation?

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Unbelievable... Sneddon returning to Union to help coach at the frozen four. Return to UVM questionable.
