UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Nice article, the kids seems to be very mature and intelligent. He should be a great player on what looks to be a very promising team. By that time, McCarthy and Stalberg will be juniors, White and Brickley will be Sophmores and you will have a future potential #1 pick in Girgensons. Not to mention Madore as a senior in net. God willing they all stay of course.

The future looks good and if Sneddon can keep to his ways UVM looks to be a national contender year in and year out at least in the short future.

How long will it be before Sneddon is forced to kick out a player like he has done so many times already?

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Not to go the "glass half empty route" after seeing what is obviously good news, but I'm a little worried this guy my be so good he'll never see the Gutterson ice....or at best case be one and done.

The compare (favorably) him to Gagner and Okposo.

Gagner was supposed to play for Wisconsin but never did, playing in Canadian jrs before becoming (I beleive) the youngest player in the NHL in his rookie year for the Oilers after being drafted 6th overall in the NHL draft.

Okposo was drafted 7th overall in the NHL draft, and I'm sure most of you have heard about his brief and controversial stint with the Gophers before heading to the Islanders.

Hope we actually get to see this guy play for awhile in green and gold.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

I almost miss those UML fan braggards who were all over our offseason post last season only to have their over hyped team come of WAY short of their expectations.

Boy they really set themselves up for that, didn't they?!

The UML fans will be back in 2 or 3 years when Blaise gets his 15-20 freshman through a few years of Hockey East and everyone says, "they're going to be great because they're so EXPERIENCED!"

Considering Lowell's years of tradition (LOL), I can see where their arrogance comes from.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Just a note,

If the Bruins advances then of the 4 teams left in the playoffs 3 would have a UVM alumni on the roster. :D

And there is at least former Catamount in the Stanley Cup finals this year.:D

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

So that means half the teams in the conference finals will have UVM alums because the Bruins probably won't even score in game 7

That article on Girgensons is inspiring to this UVM fan. He will likely be the highest ranked UVM recruit ever and that class will be strong.

It's a shame they didn't do anything for Vermont while in college. Was that a product of Vermont unable to develop them or Vermont playing a system that degrades the skill of its players?

Right.....It's not like Tim Thomas didn't hold just about every goaltending record and carried UVM to its first two NCAA tourney appearances ever.

And Torrey Mitchell didn't help UVM be a contender from the first time they took the ice as a member of Hockey East, leading to UVM gaining a little more recognition/prestige leading to better recruits.

Nope, those guys out right sucked at UVM and didn't help the program out at all.

UVM will travel to Minnesota to play a team out there.

UVM will play Dartmouth according to their agreement.

I'm guess UVM will play Yale and / or SLU to finish out their OOC.

Two of the games will be X-mas tourney and the rest will happen in the Oct-Nov.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Yes, I have the Yale game above.

We are not on the posted schedules of UMD, Bemidji or Minnesota St-Mankato. I swung by the Gophers thread and no one there thinks we are playing them this year. So I'm starting to wonder about the Minnesota trip, unless it is a holiday tourney of some sort.

Yeah I'm not sure, Sneddon said it in an interview at (?maybe before?) the NCAA's that DU would be here and we would be traveling to Minn. I suppose it's possible that he meant we would be traveling to Minn the following year.

Either way, DU will be another great test for the Cats and a good showing will go along way. Maybe even change INCH and their power rankings from hating the Cats to giving them a bit of credit once in a while.

Minny's already hosting UMass, so you're probably not going there. The Dodge Classic field is Minny, Bemidji, Ferris and Union, so not that either. And you're not on St. Cloud's schedule. I'd say you guys aren't going to Minnesota.

I heard somewhere that the Gophers are replacing DU for the 2011-2012 season and so I have had the suspicion that Sneddon said that when UVM would be traveling to Minn. he meant after next season.

Either way, I'm sure UVM will have another strong OOC schedule. It seems to be their saving grace lately and I doubt they are going to change their scheduling now.

Thanks for that info.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

INCH will give the Cats credit when they earn it by beating the teams they should beat most every time out. Finishing 8th in HE does not warrant high marks.

I think INCH had them pretty high the years that they had the hot starts and then faded. That probably gaves INCH an unpleasant institutional memory (of the fades) that needs to wear off before the cats get back into their good graces.

I think Brickley, Girgensons, et al will help INCH favor the cats in the future.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

After the Bruins sad, unbelievable choke job, here's a link to some good/happy
news about former UVM player Patrick Sharp (from Thunder Bay).

Maybe not the "prettiest" of goals but sure the Hawks were glad to get it. :)

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

UVM commit Ian Spencer was selected in the 3rd round, 36th overall in the USHL futures draft to Des Moines. The futures draft consists of only players with 1994 birthdays. Ian is a defenseman and will join UVM in the fall of 2012.
He looks like another good commit for coach Sneddon.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

UVM commit Nick Luukko was selected in the 3rd round, 37th overall in the USHL draft to Dubuque. Nick is a defenseman and will join UVM in the fall of 2011.

Jcarter -just to set the record straight, UVM did make the NCAA tourney prior to the St Louis/Perrin/Thomas era. The year was 1987-1988, they played against Bowling Green.

Players from that team included Ian Boyce and Kyle McDonough John Leclair
