UVM Offseason 2023

Big fish you say? Might that big fish be a Belorussian D that has top 10 draft potential next year?

You would be correct. McMahon noted it in his newsletter, I believe. Us, Michigan, and MSU. Worth noting Woodcroft's brother Craig (a former college player himself at Colgate) coaches in Belarus and has worked with the NT before.

Do we know UVMs 10th non-conf game?

Got Union 2x, st. Thomas 2x, @AIC, @Clarkson, @St. Lawrence, @Long Island 2x, and I'm going to guess the last game is Stonehill or an ECAC team.

Are those LIU and SLU games official? I haven't seen anything on those.

They haven't officially released their schedules yet but SLU is supposed to be the night before the Clarkson game so that would be 10/13. Long Island is in Dec.

Was just missing a nonconf game so I figure it's probably Stonehill since they seem to be playing a bunch of teams 1x or it's an ecac team like Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, or Brown.

Gotta be Dartmouth then, right?

Based on history I was thinking almost certainly Dartmouth, or if not Dartmouth then Yale or maybe Brown. Wasn't considering Stonehill.

I have to say I'm happy they've dropped the degree of difficulty on out of conference games a bit to match where we are in the rebuild.

I think the team gets more benefit from playing a stronger schedule. If I'm playing a top HE team, I'll be better prepared if I just played a top 20 team rather than a low ranked team. Top recruits want to play top teams. Also, the better team doesn't always win in hockey. Upsets will happen. The more games there are against better teams, the greater the likelihood of an exciting unexpected win. On the other hand, with a lot of games against weak opponents, eventually you lose one of them and that's very discouraging. UVM hasn't played a Big 10 or NCHC team since 12/2019. That season, UVM's record was 12-19-3. But, we beat Michigan and split with Colorado College.

On another note, I'm pleased we're playing St. Lawrence again. That rivalry dates back to our Division 2 days and they're not far away. I'd prefer to not double up on ECAC teams (Colgate and RPI last season, Union this season). I'd rather play one game and play an additional ECAC team. But, that's easier said than done.

Don't disagree with your points at all, Jim F. But I'm at the point where until we have a chance at breaking .500 it'll be tough for us to get back into the national picture in any way. When you are playing a Hockey East schedule you know you are going to get SOS up with BU, BC, etc etc etc.

As for recruits, again we play in HE so I don't think any recruit is going to feel negatively about the schedule. I think it is different if you are trying to recruit as an Atlantic hockey team where your out of conference record does have to be very strong.

Long run, I'd like to see a schedule like this year's but maybe swap out one of the lower level teams with a top team from a western league. To me, that'd strike the right balance. But this year I'm happy to keep it lighter in the hopes we can make some progress on the number of Ws.

Sooooo...Maybe in hindsight we should've gone with Barr.

Looks like another rebuild on the way. Maybe Weidler turns out to be the guy, but I could see a situation where a whole bunch of players start leaving. This athletic department is a joke.

New rink is a JOKE….Head Coach is a JOKE….glad I didn’t renew my season tickets this year….ten years a season ticket holder…this AD is a JOKE….I feel sorry for all the players past and present to see what a JOKE this program is…..I’m out enjoy getting stomped by hockey east year after year

Ugh. Felt like roster wise they were really starting to bring in some talent, and got unlucky with some guys who didn't show up like Strbak and Thomas.

Hopefully the roster turmoil isn't too bad but I'm fearing the worst as a fan.

I hope whatever he did was egregious and this isn’t some kind of bs firing. It’s honestly a little hard for me to believe someone in his position wouldn’t know better but I guess anything is possible.

Obviously not what the program needed as we are trying to make steps upward. I also hope its not a BS type of situation. Todd has representation and as reported in media:

Andrew Miltenberg, an attorney representing Woodcroft, issued the following statement about his client:

“We vehemently disagree with the process and the findings of a proceeding that lacked fundamental fairness and due process. We strongly believe the University’s decision was contrary to the facts and the law. We intend to pursue justice for Mr. Woodcroft, who has been an outstanding coach and community advocate for over two decades.”

Welcome to Academia 2023. If only he'd just taken bribes from Ukraine and China, the poor guy would still be in a job ...
