UVM Offseason 2023

Already been noted the two portal pickups (Dubinsky and Bucheler). Bouquot is in there as a grad transfer; Schachle, Tarkiainen, and Mountain also in there. Tarkiainen didn't play at all this season and Mountain only got a few games so not real shocks and I wonder if Schachle just wants to go home (he was originally a UAA commit and is from Alaska, and they're playing again).

For the most part the guys in the portal are the guys I expected. Bouquot would've been great to have for another year, but I get wanted to go somewhere new for his extra year. Schacle is a bit of a surprise.

Total hope and speculation, but with our RPI connections and need of goal scoring, hoping maybe we pick up their 15 goal scorer Mahshie out of the portal.

This whole portal thing is very interesting. Alot of other schools in HE have bigger #'s of players entered. But until you really scrutinize the list it's not easy to say one school is getting impacted more than others. Additionally, some underclassmen signed pro deals leaving early (not UVM) impacting their schools returning roster.

UVM's official list has 7 names.
Vitolins is hold over from 1 yr + so he was gone already.
Azzaro Tinling same thing - left over 1 year ago.
Jacques Bouquot - SR already played 4 years - could stay I'm just not sure there is a spot for him and I'm thinking it's time to move forward with the returning players.
Hudson - as you mentioned 3rd string goalie - opportunity to replace.
Mountain - played 13 games - no goals.
Tarkiainen - don't think he got into any games.
Porter Schachle - like the player, like the story, like the effort and hustle. But 3 goals in mostly 4th line duty by end of year. Maybe this is his choice to return to Alaska or he's reading the tea leaves and deciding to get someplace with more playing time?

Per Mike McMahon, UVM snags Ryan Miotto from Canisius in the portal. Grad transfer, second top scorer on their team and first line center. Obviously a 1C in Atlantic is probably a 2C or 3C in Hockey East, but that should *play*.

Very cool to see an incoming transfer with a history of scoring, even if it's Atlantic Hockey. Still would like to see them add another experienced D or two. If there is space up front, Nicholas Niemo of Middlebury had a really strong FR season at Bentley last year and I think is still uncommitted in the portal. Looking at who they've lost and who they're bringing it, I'd say the offseason is going well so far.

Looks like they got a goalie out of the portal. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/201872/connor-mackenzie

Okay numbers in the AJHL, but I'd guess he is destined for the #3 role. Pretty quiet on the recruiting front.

Would agree that looks like where he slots in. What is interesting is that Gabe is #1 and SR, then 2 incoming (23-24) FR (including Mackenzie), and Axel Mangbo from Swenden and USHL. Then in 24-25 Daniel Heroux (Montreal and West Isle player) who is listed on some NA NHL draft lists and is currently at Kimball. Another Goalie is listed in 25-26, Aiden Mckenna which could potentially leave 4 goalies vying for roster positions. I guess alot can happen between now and those future dates and probably better to have too many goalies than not enough. Mangbo, Heroux, Mckenna - all prototypical 6'2"-6'3" and lean.

I wonder if the portal has something to do with number of goalie recruits. It's good to have cover in case someone leaves over a lack of playing time. Brody Hoffman came out of that league with similar numbers and had a really solid career.

UVM also got a commitment from Freddie Larsson, 04 forward who plays for Malmo in Sweden. Probably a 2024 arrival, since he'll have to sit some as he's played 5 SHL games and the precedent tends to be "sit/play elsewhere for a year, then suspension for each game you played".

And yeah, I do wonder if coaches are overrecruiting bc of the portal. Extra cover, and players have more freedom of movement if they're not playing.

Lol the NCAA eligibility rules are such a joke. You can play in a fully pro league and still play college hockey but if you play major junior you're done. I think this was the same story with Buyalsky.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad this player is eligible and that he's coming to UVM, but the rules are nonsense.

OK - anyone have an update on the Rink/Gym projects? I haven't been up to the "hill" lately and not sure if any progress has been made. I recall this to be the last public comment. Not sure what it really means in regard to shovels in the ground. This is one project that needs to get done. Every year that passes the price tag just increases.

UVM Website: (cut portions of statement).

Board Reaffirms Multipurpose Center Project Commitment and Goals - February 11, 2023.

Following a report from the Multipurpose Center Work Group on Feb. 11, the Board of Trustees reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the Multipurpose Center project and reiterated the importance of its original goals including increasing the space available to all UVM students for recreation, wellness and fitness activities and upgrading facilities for intercollegiate athletics.

To date, the university has invested over $67 million in the project.

The work group determined that an additional $87 million is needed to complete construction.

“Today, the board unanimously affirmed our commitment to this project and our belief that the plan approved in 2019 remains the best path forward for UVM,” said chair Ron Lumbra. “The board is also keenly aware of the significant resources required to complete the project and we will work intently with our partners to identify funding solutions. We remain grateful for the generosity of the project’s many supporters.”

Took a quick look in the directory, an idea of what this incoming freshman class may look like:

Eli Barnett
Mario Gasparini
Duncan Ramsay
Alex Bump
Matt Cato
Jack Malinski
Dan Sambuco
Axel Mangbo

are all in. Joe Calvarino and Ethan Begg are not, and they age out of junior.

There's a few in but with a year of junior left (the likes of Charlie Kinsman, Jackson Krill, Colin Kessler, and Max Strand), and I'd imagine they want to give some of them extra time to cook instead of rushing. Also whispers that UVM has a whale on their radar who would join this season...and the interest is at least mutual enough for us to be in the top 3 alongside Big Ten teams.

Thanks for this update on this. Was wondering about Begg and Calvarino. They just never clicked in Junior. I think this is the right group to bring. Another year of junior will help the rest of that group.

Big fish you say? Might that big fish be a Belorussian D that has top 10 draft potential next year?

Also was sad to see Caeden Herrington didn't get an Ivan Hlinka invite, but still think he's gonna have a huge year at Holderness. Exciting prospect for the future.
