UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

I didn't see the UNH game. The first period of the Brown game made me angry. Short version: Hang out in the defensive end chasing the puck and blocking shots while Lekkas stands on his head making amazing saves. Gain control of the puck and either miss the first pass out of the defensive zone or gain the center line and dump it in to do a whole sale line change. Repeat.

The players are better than this. I really like the team's depth. Players need to have the attitude that you ALWAYS have 10 more strides before you need to go to the bench. Control the puck. Instead of dumping it skate into the offensive zone while the players behind you change. Dumping it in should never be an option.

I agree with the lack of patience with the puck.
Good things happened when a few players DID show patience.
I do think we might have a couple of lines who might have defensive liabilities.
The sitting of Misley/Vlad might be a result of some of that?
Our top line also seems to let up a few too many shot attempts.
Maybe the line blender will help things? I know it seems like there was some chemistry but if we never score more than 2 against the likes of UNH and Brown, it will be a long season for Stef.

Go Cats Go!

Game day!

Also, apologies that I've been slacking on the blog lately...midterms last week and I wound up utterly knackered early this week (and there was also some weird scheduling on the women's side). But I'll be at all four games between the men and women.

I wonder which team shows up tonight. Hopefully it is not the one that played in the Brown game.

Very fun game to watch and a heartbreaking loss. This must be how Brown felt after their game last weekend.

First 5 minutes were ugly. The rest of the night I thought they played ok The team with the hot goalie wins. And to the casual observer the power play and penalty kill are indistinguishable. Lodermeier needs to be on the ice more

Expect a win tonight

Thing of it is both goalies were very good tonight. UVM had the shot generation, but no end product. Basically a similar game to the earlier women's game, just the women executed once (and kept the shutout) and the men didn't

Would like to see the forwards work on shooting the puck quicker.

Announcer said upper body is the reason. No head games here. Goalie looking great again. D zone a little more improvement - not dismal. Neutral zone not sharp. We've had 2 good scoring chances. Everything else just looks like we don't have players with a scoring touch.

We will see in the third. At least the guys playing due to injury are working hard. Would like to see them get rewarded.

wow. Just great. So happy for the boys. Great effort all weekend and earned a split for sure.

That was as entertaining as it gets! Players never gave up and deserved that win for sure. Two standouts to me-Misley’s improved defensive play, and Lekkas looked amazing yet again. Great win!

59 and 1/2 minutes of lackluster hcokey followed by 5 and 1/2 minutes of exilerating joy. Lekkas played amazing as usual and the defense played better then recent outings. I just don’t understand the offensive strategy. At least they are no longer skating to the neutral zone and dumping it into the corner just to turn it over. Now their carrying it into the offensive zone, which i like, but then going straight to the corner and exhausting energy just to lose it 30 seconds later without a shot on goal. Its really hard to score goals from behind the net.
I’m extremely happy with their effort to stay in this game and not give up. I just have to question the effectiveness of this offensive strategy.

2 questions
Does anyone know why there was not penalty for the too many men call? They took the goal back, but nobody served two minutes. Not that I’m complaining.
And why is Sneddon not doing post game press?

I definitely agree with your take - honestly had UConn scored in the third I would've left early because my god that second period was mind-numbing.

As for your questions...

1. Hockey East refs. But seriously, I don't know. I assume that the penalty itself isn't reviewable, but the goal was for the infraction, and maybe you can't give them the penalty after the fact? That's the most logical explanation besides "Gravellese and Shea are on their **** again"

2. He is, they're just not putting it on the highlight packs anymore. https://twitter.com/UVMmhockey/status/1058900277590441984

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

It was nice to be on the right end of one of these last second excitement games.

Gravellese and Shea are the two worst refs in Hockey East. They couldn't call the too many men penalty off the review. And UVM had 7 on the ice for a long time.

Things they need to work on in practice:
- Breakout. Way too many passes to the other team. Move the puck to space. Defense, stop firing the puck at your forwards like you trying to score a goal.
- Quick release on shots. I bet the announcers would love to say "One times it - GOAL!"
- Line changes and counting :)

I think the team is going in the right direction. Nice seeing completed passes, drop passes, and a little bit more patience with the puck.

Happy for the boys to steal a W, which kinda makes up for the tough loss against Quinnipiac. I just wish we weren't constantly struggling on offense, year after year, after year. Take away the Michigan game, and the team's scored 8 goals in 5 games. Add in the Leurentian game, and it's 9 goals in 6 games. You look at Ariz St, a team that's only been in existence for a few years, and they put up 9 goals just last weekend alone against a very good (6th ranked) Penn St team. Why is offense such a constant problem for UVM? (somewhat of a rhetorical question, cuz I think we all know why). We need someone to come in, on a consultancy basis perhaps, or as an assistant, (or better yet, as a head coach), to teach our guys the elements of offensive hockey. Just saying "we need to get guys to the net more" every couple of weeks isn't going to win hockey games.
