UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Not many positives tonight and not thrilled with the return of the dump and chase offense.

Northeastern turns tables, beats UVM 4-1.

"There will be a lot of lineup changes," Sneddon said. "Pretty much everybody who's not in tonight that is healthy will be in (Saturday). I'm fed up with some of the lack of effort of some of our guys so we'll make some changes.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Not many positives tonight and not thrilled with the return of the dump and chase offense.

The only real positives were the students. I was so impressed when they spontaneously sang the national anthem to Dave Grippo's saxophone solo. They also cheered for Santaguida after a huge save. When they did retreat to their obscene antics, they immediately stopped after the PA announcement that you will be removed from the game if identified. They started several "UVM" chants. I was verty impressed with them.

Too bad the team wasn't able to respond to the students. I think tonight will tell us how the rest of the season will go. If they come back with a vengeance then they will be a contender, if not I think we will have a very disappointing second half. I'm know this team has it in them so I expect we will see a whole different game tonight; I know we will see a lot of line-up changes from last night.

Good luck CATS we will do our part, please do your best - that is all we can ask. Don't give up.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Sneddon was not very happy after the game... his quote was something to the effect of every healthy player that was not on the ice last night would be tonight. I guess we will see how tough this team is and if they can respond.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Well, two games against a beatable opponent and 1 point. At home. Friday, the forwards were lacklustre, with little effort, no passing and very few actual scoring chances. The vaunted duo of Privittera and Paliotts was -3. When will you guys realize that you have two very talented offensive defencemen in those two, but Coach is playing them like they are each Shea Weber. They are each in fact below average defensively.......and it shows. The only way this team can score even strength goals, given that they are size challenged, is to swarm and outwork the opposition and to be willing to take a hit to make a pass. This did not happen Friday night....again. Saturday saw wholesale lineup changes, including benching the team's top scorer. While a tie is better then a loss, both goals were on the pp. No even strength goals. More energetic work by the forwards but no creativity. The NU forwards passed to each other, went to open areas and were way more physical. If Abramson wasn't going to dress, which based on Fridayu's game was odd to me, let him play forward and hit someone on the forecheck. Sinkbeil can't do it all by himself. Unless they deliver an effort like they did against Dartmouth, BU is going to be a tough hill to climb.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I wish! More like zero points and a non-conference tie. Ouch.

Pre-season I would have said BU should be 3, maybe 4 points. Now I'm guessing 0 maybe 1. Does anybody think we can beat BU at this point? This 2nd half of the season is getting ugly in a hurry. I hope Senddon's wake-up call to the team get some players ready to work a bit harder.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Okay, game day. Unfortunately, the way the Cats are playing right now, I don't see them beating anyone in HE, much less a hugely talented Eichel-led BU team. Cats defense hasn't been good and, like most years, the offense has been abysmal. You're not going to beat many teams when your offense is scoring at around a 1.5 goals per game clip recently. Wish I had a brighter outlook, but I don't see things improving this weekend. If I were a betting man, I'd go with BU 4-1 and 3-2. Hope the Cats can prove me wrong.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Been ugly lately obv... going to take an all out effort from the boys tonight.

I hope they bring it!

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Best effort I have seen out of cats this year. Obviously there was the motivation and in typical fashion we played up, wish we played like that against everyone.

I highly question sneddons move to pull hoff in third period, talk a out a confidence killer. I think he played a decent game, the 2nd goal could have been avoided by simply clearing the puck, and that third one he went end to end and sniped, not worth pulling your supposed goto guy down the stretch.

Markinson continues to impress me with his relentless forcheck and hustle, doesn't give up on anything, and he was rewarded for it tonight. I wish sneddon could get Mario to buy into that, getting tired of seeing him glide into the offensive zone waving his stick one handed at the defenseman. Outside of near snipe, I thought he was a liability all night. Is he injured?
Abramson looked 100% better last night than the week before. Not saying he was great, but against NU I had flashbacks to brooks Herrington on d 6 years ago, just brutal, big and unskilled. Hope he continues to see time, would be nice to have a big man ready for next year when we lose Pali and
Lukko.
Not impressed with the refs tonight. Pretty terrible, contradicting eachother, lots of missed calls that were just called penalty a on VT...

Eichel was a non factor, and if I didn't know who he was I wouldn't have noticed him. Overall BU is big and tough though, rough around the edges, but lots of individual skill.

Overall good game, tough loss. Hoping to see that same intensity and a bit more consistant officiating tonight.

I was surprised to see Sneddon pull him, but I don't necessarily think it was a bad move. That third goal... well there should have been a bit more defensive help and it was a good shot, but Hoffs a big kid and there is no way that shot should have gone in. It wasn't a great angle and it was a soft goal. At that point it looked like things may have been starting to turn ugly and I think Sneddon probably wanted to make sure things didn't get out of hand. As for Hoff being the goto guy down the stretch I don't think that is even the case. Last season it was Sneddon's plan to ride Santa down the stretch, but he ended up injured. They are both excellent goalies and either are capable, I really don't think either is a "goto" guy just yet. And frankly, I think Santa has a slight edge at this point.

I wish sneddon could get Mario to buy into that, getting tired of seeing him glide into the offensive zone waving his stick one handed at the defenseman.

I think you are missing the fact that Mario and Marikison are two different guys with two different styles of play. Mario isn't nearly as fast as Colin, nor does he try to be. Mario is successful because he has a good shot and because he has good instinct. He isn't going to be a guy that rushes end to end, what he is, is a guy that knows how to be in the right place at the right time. Trying to say you want Mario to play a certain way would be like saying Gretzky should have tried to play more like Mario Lemieux...

I totally agree with this. They were horrible... Gravalese continues to dictate the game... really calling goaltender interference away from the play from the opposite end of the ice. Guy has small ***** syndrome or something and feels like he needs to assert his authority from time to time over nothing. Worst ref in HE... I cringe everytime that guy steps on the ice.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I agree (mostly) with charlie.

Great first period BUT it is tough to dominate a team and not get on the scoreboard... Cats had two or three A+ chances and needed to bury one of them. Forecheck, physical play and cycling game were all on full speed and it was great to watch. Crushed the faceoff battle as well, especially in the offensive zone.

Refs made some strange calls/ no calls and I have to say it seemed like we were on the short end of it last night. Don't love the Hoff pulling either, but the team got going again immediately so I can't really disagree with the move.

I think it's pretty clear that he is not "the man" in Sneddon's eyes. If I had to go with one now, Santa would be my choice (although it's still tough to watch him sometimes)... and Hoff was the man in my opinion earlier this year. That second BU goal was such a mental mistake trying to clear the zone, I hate seeing that.

Markinson has been awesome, and his speed, and overall skating ability are huge plusses. Easily the best player on the ice last night imo.

Mario does get lazy in the defensive zone and also is prone to getting caught on long shifts which magnifies that problem. I think it's a little unfair to criticize him for "not buying in" though despite Sneddon sitting him against NU. His skating ability is well below Markinson but has other spikes in his game that most of the team is lacking. There are a lot of times I see him make effort plays on the pk and on the forecheck, and his skill set really wouldn't suit the Markinson game.

Abramson is not slow goon that can't skate or move the puck, I think he is going to be a beast for us. He is huge, doesn't get flustered on the puck and plays good positional D. I've also been impressed with the fourth liners, when Mckinney is on the ice he really makes things happen.

Great team spirit and effort in the third. We "won" 2 of 3 periods, but I guess winning the game would have been better... Let's see the same effort tonight!

To touch on the topics you guys discussed and to add a few thoughts:
Hoffman has let in a soft goal in each of at least the last three games he has played. Last night was no exception. The D took Rodrigues way wide and all a goalie is supposed to do on that play is to stay at the top corner of the crease, stick down and any shot, in the air or on the ice, will hit him. Why a big goalie like Hoffman would choose to go down is baffling, and led to a goal. The way he stormed off the ice would make me think that all might not be well between him and the Coach at this point.
The forwards played the way they have to...they are small and industrious when on their game but compared to BU, few are offensively gifted of the sniper variety.
I agree that Abramson finally appears comfortable playing in this league and for this team. Certainly it must have been emotional for him as he was committed to by BU only to have their admissions kybosh his deal. He brings a whole package of sandpaper. Too bad there is not fighting in NCAA or Somerby may have regretted his cheap shot. I agree that he is going to be a beast at both ends of the ice and hope that Coach can figure that out sooner then later.
To that end, I still believe that Paliotta and Privettera are extremely gifted offensive players but below average in the defensive zone. Coach plays them waaaay too much in 5 x 5 and penalty kill situations and this not only is detrimental when Luukko, Pattyn, and now I believe Abramson are better, but it tires them by the end of the game.
Hopefully the same style effort tonight, coupled with a little puck luck and maybe an epiphany from the Coach as to player usage (although I doubt that-we will ride right out of the Tournament on the backs of those two D-men) and we CAN beat BU, if Santaguida turns in a solid performance.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Tough that this game really came down to Mario's shot hitting the crossbar and BU's 2nd goal just sneaking under.

Henefin should not be doing D1 he is totally clueless, when Gravellese is the voice of reason you know you stink, he twice
had to clean up messes his counterpart made.

Funny how tough BU players who take cheap shots all over the ice suddenly get weak and drop whenever slighty touched
in the offensive zone.

Bu's D did not seem to ever get comforable with our forecheck, might have set a record for icings last night.

Sorry to Hoff but that weak goal was a killer at the worst time, thats 3 times he has been pulled this year...Santa so far 0.

Agree #9 was a non-factor 5 on 5.

Agree #9 was a non-factor 5 on 5.

If recent history holds to form, you'll notice him much more tonight. Not sure why he has been having "invisible" games lately, but they always seem to be Friday, followed by a much better performance on day 2.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Anyone notice Hoffman was not on the bench after he was pulled? Was he injured? Could have been in the tunnel, but don't think so.

Hmmm, interesting. Don't know why that would have been. If you'll notice, a few posts back Hoser said he "stormed off the ice." Could he have been having a hissy fit and gone to the locker room? Wouldn't think Sneddon would allow that, but maybe he felt Hoff needed to blow off some steam. In any event, I'd say there's a 110% chance we'll see Santa starting in goal tonight.

Cats need to put some pucks in the net tonight. The season's starting to slip away unless they start winning some games.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Well this was certainly good news. How big of an impact on the game did he have last night? Best place to watch the game tonight online? I'd think the UVM website, but is there a better way?
Hockey East suspended Boston University defenseman Doyle Somerby for Saturday’s game against Vermont after he was penalized for a hit in Friday’s win over the Catamounts.

The one-game suspension came after Somerby was called for interference on a check.

Somerby, a sophomore, has played in 21 of the Terriers’ 22 games, with three assists.

He’s eligible to return in a Jan. 30 game against Massachusetts.

Yeah, BU fans are whining about it on their thread. They also posted a YouTube video of the hit for anyone that's interested.
