UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

C'mon Cats, let's keep it going! Maine's obviously not what it used to be, but it'd still be cool to take all 4 games off them this season. Would not have thought that possible just a few years ago. Anyone care to speculate who will get the start in net tonight? I think tonight's game will be really telling as to how Sneddon views the two goalies -- Hoff starts and he's The Man; Santa starts and things are still up for grabs, or Sneddon's happy with a rotation.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I think he'll go with Santa. Hoffman is the man but it's a nice rotation, and imo this is the kind of game Coach should be giving him.

Hard to win 4 games vs one opponent in a season but the Cats are clearly a better team this year. The most important thing is bringing the energy early tonight. Maine has been suffering and have to be low on confidence. Strong first period and don't look back!

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Just got done arguing with directv about why I can't get the game on fox college sports tonight (608) supposedly I'm not in the right region here in vt... Hmmm...

Anyway, go vt...

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

4-1 win... sounded like another strong performance. Mario and Jarrid Privitera stay hot.

Offensive contributions from 3 lines, lots of pucks on the net, got ahead and put the lockdown on in the second and third seemed like UMaine created nothing. Santa did what he had to.

PK has killed 18 in a row and is over 95%.

Love it.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Besides the uconn game, this is a UVM we havnt seen in a long time... Consistently winnig the games we should, and absolutely shut down on the PK. The 5 on 3 for 1:44 against UMass was a thing of art, granted Umass is terrible, it was fundamentally perfect. The positioning, shotblocking, and Hoffman backed it all up perfectly...

Speaking of umass... I remember everyone being pretty butthurt when Micheletto, Gasparini and company bailed out late on the offseason, but was this a blessing in disguise? Were they holding Sneddon back or has he just changed his philosophy that much? I've got to assume the recruiting has improved with the new guys...

Any injury updates? Return date for forg? Is Reynolds hurt?

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

I was pleased when Michelletto left except that the timing was so late in the offseason. Ditto Gasparini. They had gotten stale and frustrated and recruiting was marginal at best. Clearly the new coaches have upgraded the recruiting. Seems they are focusing mostly on western canadian leagues now rather than USHL. Seem to be finding better talent there. Question is how long they can keep it up? The new recruits may not be blue chippers or snipers (Puskarich the exception) but they are quick, hardworking and have good hands. Here is my list of why the team is better so far this year:

1. Depth at forward and balanced scoring. UVM finally has four strong lines they can roll. Not much difference between the lines this year. Currently three of the lines can score. I think that goes to four when we get the other forwards back from injury and we have Forgione, Reynolds and Mckinney available. Team foot speed is good and stick skills are good.
2. Paliotta staying. Other than getting beat badly at PC once he has been a rock. Logs a lot of minutes. Strong game. Moving puck nicely. confident. He should be an NHL regular soon
3. Alex Priviterra. He is probably our most talented offensive D man in years. Takes some risks but fun to watch and gets rewarded. great compliment to Paliotta
4. Goaltending. Still a work in progress to get to championship level - a couple soft goals - but better than first half of last season.
5. Mental toughness. this team knows it can come back from a deficit and they know how to keep a lead
6. PK. it's back finally
7. PP. The puck movement is way better than recent years. This may be partially the low talent teams we have played (Maine, Umass, Northeastern, Clarkson), remains to be seen how it performs against BC, BU and UML

In any case, its been fun so far, hope they can carry the momentum through the next month when they only play two games in 29 days....

I believe all forwards not playing currently are injured.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

As I recall, isn't Trey Phillips going to be eligible for the St. Lawrence games? If this guy's anywhere near as good as he's touted to be, this will be a very nice addition to the team. Also, anyone know the extent of Reynold's injury? Hopefully he'll be back against St. Lawrence....

Regarding the PP I think Privetera has a lot to do with that. He moves the puck very well with strong crisp passes.

These next few games are going to be big for making sure we make the tourney. STL and Yale are good for PRW movement especially as HE is weak this year. UVM now the top HE team .. who would have thought.

.

I always liked John, but it seems the change has done us very well. I always thought Joey was arrogant when he played and it carried on to his coaching. i was shocked when Kevin hired him. The fact that is father, Gino, was the USHL Commissioner for years may have had something to do with it. Also explains the recruiting. I miss John as a person and hope he does well, but am so happy with the way things are turning around. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I see this team keep getting better all the time. I hope Trey is what everyone expects, but even if not we have a solid championship team. One other obvservation is we for the most part aren't taking dumb penalities. That Brickley approach hurt us so many times. I've always said if you keep your composure, are in top condition and have the attitude to win that can overcome other obstacles. As always I'm impressed with the adjustments Kevin has made (staff, players, etc.) - he is a smart guy. I knew he'd figure things out while holding players accountable. Go CATS Go.

I think this is the biggest difference. I think UVM's top line may not be as strong as other team's top line but I don't think there is as much of a drop off going to UVM's second and third lines. This might help explain why UVM seems to 'start slow' in games and really come on in the third period.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

Check out the prelim roster for the world Jrs. they list 7 BC players, no bad for a 7-7 team. Do these selection groups only look at a few schools?

Yeah it only took 10 years...... My jury is still out despite this being the best team in a loooooonnnnngggg time under Sneddon. 1-2 seasons out of 10-11 years does not convince me yet. Speaking of negativity where is Catmandooooooooo??:D

Preliminary Roster
Where do you see 7? I see 5... 1 F, 3 D, 1 G

The selection group does not look at schools. They look first for kids that are eligible to play, by age. This year, the players with birth dates between 1994-1999 are eligible to play in the World Juniors. They then select a preliminary team based on talent. This year the prelim team is 30 players.

Three of those five Boston College players made last year's team (Santini, McCoshen, Demko). The other 2 are frosh... one is a 17 yr. old, the other an 18 yr. old. Got any kids that age on your squad? If so, they're eligible, but maybe not good enough in the selection committee eyes (Torey Krug, Mich. St./Boston Bruins, was not good enough his last season of Junior eligibility).

My guess is only 2, maybe 3 of the BC guys make it. Santini, a soph ELITE D-man is out injured and not expected to return until January. He is arguably one of the best D-men Hockey East has to offer. Thatcher Demko, G, may sit out and rest up what is ailing (or perhaps just not make the team).

7 if you count Miles Wood and Bracco both coming next year in an exceptional class

Make it 8 then? Sonny Milano was committed to BC and backed out in August, going pro.
It is rumored Bracco has little chance of showing up. I don't count any chickens before they're hatched.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

BC should just forfeit all games while the tournament is being played.

Re: UVM 2014-2015: Let's Play 10 Games in Massachusetts this Season

My jury is still out despite this being the best team in a loooooonnnnngggg time under Sneddon. 1-2 seasons out of 10-11 years does not convince me yet.

In the HE Era, Sneddon has had a winning record 6 of 9 season (not counting this current season), has won 18+ games 3 times and 20+ games 2 times. Last season in the ECAC was a winning season as well. I don't think it's fair in the least to say we have only had 1-2 good seasons.

I guess it depends on what a "good" season is, but no matter what your definition Sneddon has brought many more "good" seasons then his predecessor. Really he has only had 3 "bad" seasons... the last 3 years Micheletto / Gasparini were recruiting.
