Utica University 2025-26 - The Road (back) To Utica

For all the folks who consider themselves to be D3 college hockey aficionados, anyone have an 0-4 team ranked in the Top 10 of any poll in the past? For that matter, how many 0-4 teams have been ranked in the Top 10 in any poll, in sport?

I’m not trying to start a fight here, and yes, I know they lost to teams ranked above them, but a loss is a loss, right? And, has it ever been done before?

St. Norbert started the 2019-20 season ranked #4 in the USCHO poll. They fell to #13 after a 1-3 start and were barely hanging on at #15 after falling to 2-4 (they would go on to a 2-7 start that year). Not quite 0-4 but a pretty close comparison. They did open the season by beating the reigning undefeated national champs (UWSP) on the road before completely collapsing.

Although I agree with the concept, a win is a win and a loss is a loss, a good pollster will still look at the opponents who these teams are losing/winning against.

I'll be honest, if I still voted in the poll, I would still put Utica in. After all, the question I would ask myself is, do I believe Utica is better than the other teams in the poll who they haven't played? If the answer is yes, then I would place them above those teams.

However, they would be on a very short leash. Any hiccup, even so much as a tie against even a good but not great team, would leave me to drop them altogether.

Of course, polls are just for fun and discussion. But it's still fun to discuss (until a certain someone comes in and ruins the fun...).

Someone once said you are what your record is. So, although Utica is 0-4, I'm sure the team I watched will significantly improve their record. and "earn" their ranking and have a real shot to please the home fans in March when it really counts.

The beauty contest polls are fundamentally ridiculous, and meaningless to boot. I really wonder why they still exist.

HOWEVER, if some coach (more likely an equipment manager) fills out a ballot having Hobart as #1, why would you "demote" a team you've ranked below them for losing to your own choice as the best team in the nation? Wasn't that exactly what you predicted in the first place?
