Utica University 2022-23: Is This The Year?

Nobody cares enough about you to make an alias

Learn how to speak English, Nubby, then get back to us. Cases matter.

The actual Adam Krug has a different SN, but misspellings are what you do. Even your Grandma must know that much.

Good God, you're stupid, but that's no secret.

If I have anything to say to you rest assured it will be Sir Nubs so you know it is me.

You can try and convince yourself these are all aliases, but when you stop and realize there are that many people who disagree with you it has to be a blow to your narcissism.

Binghamton University just made the announcement they are adding D1 hockey possibly as soon as 24-25. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new conference will be a reality with Binghamton, Utica, LIU, and the 6 D2 schools. Thoughts?

That would be a kicker if Binghamton goes to D1 before Utica... :-)

I'll say what I said before, that kind of conference would be a crap conference for Utica to get involved in. They'd be better of staying D3.

Remember when Binghamton was briefly in the SUNYAC? They were beyond horrible. Think Scranton bad. They dumped their program just before a season was to start because not enough players showed up to try out... Different times back then.

Syracuse has nowhere to play. The women play in a crap rink. Unless a Pegula-like alum ponies up some bigtime money, Syracuse isn't starting up a men's hockey program. They are not going to do it half ass. Plus, a school like that will only enter if they can join a conference like ECAC or Hockey East (where fellow ACC school BC is). The are not going to do it to join AHA.

I thought it might be interesting to see how the perennial national power Utica Pios stack up in NCAA Tournamemt wins from 2014 to now.

11 - UW-Stevens Point
10 - St. Norbert
9 - Norwich
7 - Geneseo
7 - Adrian
6 - Trinity
6 - Hobart
5 - UNE
3 - Oswego
2 - UMB
2 - Salve Regina
2 - Endicott
2 - Colby
2 - Augsburg
1 - Nichols
1 - Manhattanville
1 - Hamilton
1 - Curry
1 - Babson
1 - Amherst
0 - Utica

Many Years ago (like 2007/2008) when Daryl Gross was AD he presented a plan to the University's Senate Budget Committee to completely redo the Athletic Area's upper south campus side that would have seen a complete overhaul and the creation of top-tier facilities for Olympic sports, Update football practice facilities (the only part of this plan that I think actually happened) and update softball and hockey facilities. He talked about men's hockey and bringing baseball back at that meeting as well but the money to even do the larger scale impact studies never martialized for anything but football plus I think there were major Title IX hurdles that there was not a solid plan to solve. Left the Area right after that so now really sure what the actual final nail was money, title IX, or just a lack of leadership support on the president's office side. I wish I still had my packet from that meeting though.

I hope Binghamton is able to put a good plan together and have future success but I would think if they were really serious about this we would start hearing rumors about them posting a coaching position soon as there is a lot of work needed to get a program together and a year rolls by pretty quickly.

The Oncenter is a 7000 seat arena. The only issue is sharing ice time with the Crunch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oncenter

Didn't they have a Div III at one time that was pathetically bad? Am I remembering that right? If so, I hope they take hockey more seriously this time around.

This newly proposed D1 league seems to be going nowhere fast . Only one of the proposed members has an on campus rink and there seems to be a significant disagreement as to the number of scholarships allowed .
To have a league without sufficient resources , funding and scholarships will not allow this league to succeed .
Bob DeGregorio has been acting as a “consultant “ to some of these teams and has been silent on the number of scholarships needed to be competitive . Interesting , as he was very vocal on the need for 18 full scholarships for the Atlantic Hockey when he was the Commisioner .
The idea for the new league seems to be a spin-off of the women’s D1 league NEWHA.
In that league all teams decide how many scholarships to give up to the NCAA maximum with no league rules.
So you have one team that gives 12 ( they won the league this year ) , a couple with 5 scholarships and 1 with 1) .
This year the league had an automatic qualifier for the NCAA tourney , and the champion played Wisconsin in the first round (18 scholarships ) and lost 9-1 and outshot 59-7.
ok I get it was Wisconsin and this was their first year in the tourney , but the point is without adequate funding including scholarships , you can call yourself D1 but you are not D1

Just announced that Utica was awarded the 2024 IIHF Women's World Championship. The dates don't interfere with NCAA men's hockey and is great news for Utica and NY

Probably the biggest get since the D1 NCAA Frozen Four was at "The Aud".

The best women players in the world, I'm excited !

Which is an answer to an interesting trivia question.

The Aud and Lake Placid's 1980 Arena are the only venues to host both a D1 men and D3 men championship. (And Lake Placid is the only one to host three different championships, having also hosted D1 women Frozen Four.)

This is all that needs be said, IMO.

Someone on here (Dog) might shed more light on the matter, but it's very difficult to see any up-side for Utica hockey, or for Utica athletics in general.

I'm a wrinkled relic of a different age, thus I remember some stuff...

Larry Costello was hired in the 80's to lead UC into D-1 hoops. That guy was a very famous coach, in the HOF right now by some nuance, but he couldn't recruit against the Marists of the world. Not at Utica.

UU boasts the best venue in D-3 college hockey. It fields a good team every year, and sells a lot more tickets than many D-1 programs do... But it's not a D-1 school.

"If it ain't broke.."

Interesting that Remy Parker is using his 5th year of eligibility to transfer to LIU. D1--> D3 --> D1. Guessing that doesn't happen every day.
