Utica University 2022-23: Is This The Year?

This reaks of jealousy. Apparently we aren’t allowed to be excited for the future of Utica University hockey on the Utica University hockey thread. Go be miserable in a different thread.

I don’t give a flying fuck whether Utica goes D1. Don’t flatter yourself. Nobody gives a flying fuck. Not even Fishman on this topic.

What I do reek of is the nonstop bullshit coming from Utica. This has been going on for what now, two years?

Like I said, wake me when something actually happens.

Nobody cares other than Utica fans discussing it on the Utica thread. It seems like the appropriate place to talk about it? Maybe you should crawl back to the suny thread and talk about what makes you happy.

Where better than to discuss the merits or lack thereof of Utica going Division 1 than the Utica thread?

I know if Utica goes Division 1 it will make fans such as yourself have improved self-esteem because you would be cheering for a D1 team instead of a D3 team.

I have no issue discussing the merits or lack thereof. I do have an issue with Russell telling us we aren’t allowed to discuss it anymore because it makes him angry.

Yeah, if the drunken version of Russel doesn't like it, perhaps he should create a Canton thread, then try to negotiate through all that heavy traffic.

:-)

Be careful with what you wish for Utica Hockey fans. Hobart lacrosse won 15 NCAA D3 Championships(12 in a row) and moved up to D1 in 1994. Since then, only half of our seasons have been .500 or above and we made it to the NCAA first round 5 times. We still get to play Syracuse and Cornell, but beat them less now than when we were D3. There are additional D1 expenses for medical and strength training and now a sport psychologist along with salary expectations for coaches and scholarships. I think there are many at Hobart that wish we were still dominating D3 lacrosse, although going D1 is prestigious and gets some national attention. I'm not sure being mediocre in D1 is better than a constant contender in D3, but hey, good luck either way.

An interesting note about that. A few years back, Hobart was going to give up the D1 experiment and move their lacrosse team back to D3. There was a huge outcry from the alumni base. The administration backed down, and kept the lacrosse team at D1.

I thought that was very interesting.

I said to wake me up when they finally go D1. I never said you weren't allowed to discuss it.

Are all Utica fans morons? Or just so wound tight because they choke every year?

There you go.

There's something to be said about embracing who you are.

Look at RIT.

Yeah, okay, hockey wise, we suck.

SUNY Poly has the same number of hockey national championships as Utica. And it was a lot cheaper for them to accomplish that.

But why even try?

Water finds it's own level.

And, as good as Utica has been at D-3, it'll be waaaay over it's head in D-1.

Then, the attendance will drop, the revenue too, and the local interest.

I simply don't get it.

C’mon Russ, we knew what you were saying. Why so angry? Is it because this forum will cease to exist when Utica goes D1? How have you not heard ANY news? Some USCHO correspondent.

Like I care about this forum.

Yeah, I heard stuff. Mostly off the record. But I can say there is no conference for Utica to join, and that is the biggest issue. Which is why I lean towards this never happening. (And if Fishman thinks Utica will be totally irrelevant in D1 even if they are in AHA, think how irrelevant they will be as an independent. Think LIU (who actually isn't half bad) and Lindenwood.)

I’ve heard the transition will not occur unless they can find a league. I also feel like I heard something about a bunch of independent schools forming a new league and that being a possible home for UU. Have you heard anything similar to that?

Yes. Bob DeGregorio, retiring commissioner of AHA and CHA, has been consulting on this project. He has run into a lot of issues because those teams don't seem to be on the same page in terms of their wants and needs (my speculation -- a big part of this disagreement could be the amount of scholarships the teams want/don't want the league to allow).

Having said that, if Fishman thinks AHA is irrelevant, that potential new league (which could include a lot of the D2 teams in the current Northeast-10 conference) will make the AHA seem like Hockey East...

My thoughts exactly! (I think you can safely take a long nap on this issue, Russell)
