Utica College

Stinks the board was down last night....

One heck of a game at the Aud. I watched the entire overtime session and Utica clearly had the better of the play through most of the first and second OT. Elmira battled back a bit in the third I thought and eventually ended up perservering to get the winner. What an effort by Jansen in goal for Elmira.

I was very impressed with a few of the young Elmira players. Shawn Kennedy in particular stood out to me. They are going to be a talented team and welcome addition to the NEHC next year! Jansen graduates, but they return a lot of skaters!

Not being facetious here, I just didn't recall why EC wanted to move East in the first place. Certainly doesn't seem to make a lick of sense in regards to money, travel, exposure, nor anything else that comes to mind.

I'm listening, though.

Have to try and talk to someone from Elmira on that.

I would imagine certainty in autobid status was part of it. There was a time that the MAC Hockey conference looked like it could be coming at any second which would put the UCHC out without a bid and enough teams. I believe their press release when they announced also noted recruiting big time in the New England states and junior leagues.

OK, but if it was all about an AQ, they might as well have stayed home, IYAM. (Yes, I just invented that one!)

And the travel for EC is going to make the UCHC look like a Sunday School picnic. Talk about bus-legs. It's hard to fathom how this deal works for Elmira.

I believe the autobid, having been a hemorrhoidal irritation since the departure of RIT from the ECAC/W, was likely the lynch pin. See the discussion from a decade ago.

Which UCHC teams were purported to be interested in joining the MAC?

(This is an intentional bump, in case you care to weigh-in. I wasn't aware that the UCHC was in danger of losing their AQ, and you'd know better than the rest of us.)

None of these problems would exist if they just selected the NCAA field on the basis of the PWR. ;-)
But that would mean that conference(s) could be shut out from the national tournament, and we all know that this generation of kids has been raised on the socialist premise that everyone should be rewarded simply for breathing.

In fact my theory is that EC is leaving the UCHC simply as recruiting leverage to promise these budding socialist kids and parents that they'd have a (theoretical) shot at the tourney every year.

*Socialism* aside, it's hard to imagine that the dregs of the 22 YO "kids" who didn't garner a D-1 offer would prefer EC to Norwich, Babson, Trinity, et al. Not seeing a recruiting advantage for them in New England whatsoever.

Not trying to be my my usual negative self, but I've been to Elmira many many times. I love the quirky Domes for hockey, but Greater Elmira does not compare favorably with Paris (or even Hartford) in a general sense.

I continue to be puzzled by this move.

Elite prospects has an article about the Canucks moving their AHL team closer to home....What impact will this have on "The U"???

You may or may not be right ;) but yes there will be high end hockey still at the Aud. Financially they are taking a huge hit right now not selling out the rink. Probably a good thing there are no playoffs. Tho Utica did get a huge amount of PPE money and will be making improvements to the rink/area.

Looks like the cat is out of the bag. Devils will now call Utica home. Time to paint the Aud lol

Yeah, some serious painting will be in order for sure.

Heard from a pretty reliable source two days ago that NJ was coming back. Makes perfect sense that Vancouver wanted to have its AHL affiliate less than 1,000 miles away; never understood why they sited it in Utica in the first place.

Binghamton is holding the bag, and I feel bad for the fans there.

Still, The Aud is definitely an AHL-quality arena, aside from it's capacity. My only hope is that NJ works as well with UC as Vancouver did. I wouldn't cross the street to see an AHL game, but I haven't missed a single UC game in 20 years.
