Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

Yes, they are guaranteed a share of the title and will have home ice throughout the tournament.

Quarters are Tuesday, Semis are next weekend (22-23) at the 1 seed and the 2 seed, Championship the weekend of the March 2.

Here are the words from UCHC Tournament Webpage:

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND (NCAA MINIGAME SERIES FORMAT)

About the NCAA Minigame Series Format
Teams in the men's semifinals and finals will play a two game series over a two day period at the higher seeded team. If a team posts two wins, or a win and a tie in the two games, they win the series. If the two game series is split at one win apiece, or both games of the series end in a tie, the series will progress into the minigame to determine an advancing team. If the minigame is necessary, a fifteen minute intermission following the conclusion of the second game will begin. Both teams will head to their locker rooms, and the ice will be resurfaced. The minigame is its own stipulated contest separate from the game that preceded it, so teams may make lineup changes in the first five minutes of the intermission if they so choose, and the score for the minigame will be reset to 0-0.

For the minigame, teams will play a single 20 minute period at regular 5-on-5 strength. The higher scoring team at the end of that period is declared the winner and advancing team. If the score is tied at the end of that period, the minigame will have another fifteen minute intermission, followed by a 20 minute sudden death overtime period. The teams will play additional 20 minute periods, separated by 15 minute intermissions, until someone scores to advance.
__________________________

I find it "interesting" that the UCHC has adopted the NCAA two game series with "the dreaded" minigame format. 10-15 years ago other leagues dropped that format because, I believe, losses which did not cause elimination hurt the NCAA seedings/chances of the winners as well as the runner-ups.

Games at Utica may/will be on Sat/Sun because of use of building by other tenants.

I don't care for this format, either.

Back in The Day, Hockey East teams would also play a 2-game series in the quarter finals, but the winner was decided by total goals in both games, combined. That was a curious arrangement by today's standards, but it made every shift count.

A team could win big on a Friday, and find themselves trailing on the next night... Ergo, neither team would concede an inch of the ice for either game, and would never throw-in the towel no matter what the score in a competitive series. When OT is on the table -if you split- sometimes teams just cruise and save energy in a lopsided game, waiting for another shot in a series OT.

Having said that, two games are better than one as far as comparative data goes. And it's interesting, no?

Utica is very easily the best team in this conference. Wouldnt be worried about anyone besides Manhattenville in playoffs. Wilkes was underwhelming, expected more from them. After Elmira’s top line they are far below average. No other team has a shot

EC's 1st line is good enough to steal a game. I would prefer not to see them again this season.

Wilkes’ top line has produced just as much as Elmira’s. That Elmira line is good, not enough to steal a game. Their depth is putrid. One of the reasons UC is successful is because they can run 4 deep. And their 4th line scores, they arent just out there to waste time

Not going to look it up, but I respectfully disagree. EC's top line is far better than anything Wilkes puts out there, via the eye-test.

We can talk "depth", and you have a point there, but as far as high-end talent, Elmira has a bit more, IMO.

Is what it is. Your still stuck on last year, where that Elmira line was great. They’ve been good this year but not nearly the same. The rest of Elmira’s 9 forwards, besides MacLean, would have trouble getting into Utica’s lineup.

EC's top line has 50 goals overall vs. 26 for Wilkes', and 42 vs. 24 in UCHC play... And that line has been slightly more productive this year than in '17/'18.

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

EC's top line is better than you are suggesting. I have seen them win multiple games all by themselves. And the Moses line can chip in as well. The other two lines are very pedestrian.

What games did they steal this year? They didnt beat anyone they werent supposed to..

Knock on wood, they’ve combined for 1 goal in their last 3 meetings with the Pios

Utica has that figured out, kinda. They have since last year, at some point.

Still, the numbers don't lie.: 42 goals in conference, just to refresh your memory. Utica counters EC's very excellent 1st-line with their best or most-rested checkers... And if you are flat-footed in your changes against Ford and Company, your night will likely end sadly.

I'll agree with you, however, that EC has very little beyond that. Makes it much easier to juggle players when the opposing team has only one scoring line to worry about. Props to Heenan for dealing with the real threat effectively.

Thats not stealing a game if they were supposed to win. That is a Stevenson team who went 10-14 and missed the playoffs. If anything that is padding stats against an inferior team.

Down 2-0 and not in the game, that is stealing.

Besides maybe the win over Manhattenville, you didn’t steal 1 game this year. You beat who you were supposed to beat, and lost to who you were supposed to lose to. The wins over Hobart/Geneseo last year, those are steals.

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

and you post an opinion not facts...you are welcome to have your opinion but I am as well. I call Stevenson a steal.

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

and since I'm not really concerned with your opinion of me we all come away happy.
