Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

Nice road-weekend for UC, especially considering they played 10 minutes of the 3rd v. Stevenson on the PK (including nearly 2 minutes of 5x3). The D has been really good of late.

Bad news is that Wilkes won twice, too. Even if they lose at Naz come Saturday, the final RS game at The Aud will decide the top seed. Pack some Tums for that one.

Fish,

No, Wilkes lost today to Manhattanville, so Utica is one game ahead of Wilkes.

Good catch. The UCHC site showed me something different, but I suppose they had a student working on it at that time. It's been corrected very recently.

Now, it looks fairly good for Utica hosting the conference. Almost a lock, as the King's game should be a shoo-in. That will be a fun weekend in any case, and no Tums need be purchased.

Utica controls its own destiny. Two wins next weekend and they have the #1 seed. However, both teams winning on Friday and a UC loss on Saturday leads to a point tie with Wilkes which remains tied after the first 2 tiebreakers. Someone else will have to determine who wins the 3rd tiebreaker....................................

My money says Wilkes has won its last game of the year, however.

Yes, on second thought, it's not a mortal lock yet. (Still getting my mind around the curious UCHC point-system, and the inaccurate conference website isn't helping much.)

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

Thanks, Badger. The UCHC website is still behind via the facts, but should Utica win v. King's, there's no possibility of finishing 2nd in the RS. And UC will beat King's

It'll be fun to have the UCHC FF right here at home.

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

A UC win over King's Friday (practically a lock) clinches #1 seed regardless of Saturday's result vs. Wilkes.
UC holds #3 tiebreaker over Wilkes due to it's better head-to-head record vs. Elmira and Manhattanville (whomever finishes 3rd).

Does any one know the dates for the UCHC semi and champion rounds are? UCHC site has February 22nd and 23rd for the semi's, March 1st (Fri) and 2nd (Sat) for the Championship. Pioneers site has Feb 23 (Sat) Feb 24 (Sun) for semi's and Mar 2 (Sat) Mar 3 (Sun) for the championship.

Re: Utica College Pioneers - 2018-19 Season: Young Guns

There is another team  playing at the Aud on Friday Feb 22 and Friday March 1, so I might guess the two game series for Utica is Saturday and Sunday. ;)

That's what I thought the Comets are the main tenant.

Nice effort v. Naz. UC kept the puck in their O-zone for the great bulk of the game. Looking at Cortland's results, they appear to be a tough out, having defeated UMB and having played some good teams close.

Noticed Derlago is still on the roster, but he hasn't dressed recently. Injury..?

Heard he had an injury that would require surgery. He is working as an assistant and is on the bench during games now.

Yes, Derlago was interviewed on the pre-game show a couple of weeks ago, and pretty-much said that he wasn't going to have the surgery nor to play anymore.

He stated that he wants to pursue coaching, and Heenan has done a great job grooming his former players to that end. Best of luck to him.

Looking at USCHO's standings it only has UC one point ahead of Elmira, if so, a loss against Wilkes and Elmira sweeps and UC doesn't win the league, is this correct ? I know there have been some discrepancies.

UCHC uses 3 pt system. 3 pts for win, 2 for OT win, 1 for OT loss.

Utica 12-3-1 (1-0 in OT) = 38 pts
Elmira 11-3-2 (0-2 in OT) = 35 pts
Wilkes 11-4-1 (1-0 in OT) = 35 pts

A win over Kings locks it up for Utica

Heenan alluded to that in today's OD, but the Wilkes game on Saturday is sold-out anyway, perhaps pursuant to some confusion among the local fans regarding the conference rules. Those in attendance will likely see the boys hoist some hardware, in any case.

So I assume UC has won the league and will host the playoffs ? Next weekend ?

Yes, they are guaranteed a share of the title and will have home ice throughout the tournament.

Quarters are Tuesday, Semis are next weekend (22-23) at the 1 seed and the 2 seed, Championship the weekend of the March 2.

Here are the words from UCHC Tournament Webpage:

2019 UCHC MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

OPENING ROUND (SINGLE ELIMINATION) - TUESDAY FEBRUARY 19th

No. 5 at No. 4

SEMIFINAL ROUND (NCAA MINIGAME SERIES FORMAT)

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND (NCAA MINIGAME SERIES FORMAT)

About the NCAA Minigame Series Format
Teams in the men's semifinals and finals will play a two game series over a two day period at the higher seeded team. If a team posts two wins, or a win and a tie in the two games, they win the series. If the two game series is split at one win apiece, or both games of the series end in a tie, the series will progress into the minigame to determine an advancing team. If the minigame is necessary, a fifteen minute intermission following the conclusion of the second game will begin. Both teams will head to their locker rooms, and the ice will be resurfaced. The minigame is its own stipulated contest separate from the game that preceded it, so teams may make lineup changes in the first five minutes of the intermission if they so choose, and the score for the minigame will be reset to 0-0.

For the minigame, teams will play a single 20 minute period at regular 5-on-5 strength. The higher scoring team at the end of that period is declared the winner and advancing team. If the score is tied at the end of that period, the minigame will have another fifteen minute intermission, followed by a 20 minute sudden death overtime period. The teams will play additional 20 minute periods, separated by 15 minute intermissions, until someone scores to advance.
__________________________

I find it "interesting" that the UCHC has adopted the NCAA two game series with "the dreaded" minigame format. 10-15 years ago other leagues dropped that format because, I believe, losses which did not cause elimination hurt the NCAA seedings/chances of the winners as well as the runner-ups.

Games at Utica may/will be on Sat/Sun because of use of building by other tenants.
