Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

On an unrelated note....
UC stays at 7 and Oswego still remains ahead of them?
Really?
Have we not pointed out the obvious?
USCHO rankings have gone from humorous to absolute idiocy.
Credibility is lost.
I for one dont look at the rankings on this site for anything but fodder for a good joke.
Good job USCHO...you are the laughing stock of polls.
Not only does a newbie ranking seem to carry more weight, it is more accurate.
Have fun being a joke.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Benny,
The City is on the hook for NOTHING.
The Aud authority has no funding from the City.
Whoever told you that was dead wrong.

Didn't sound to covincing to me. The Aud authority is funded by who? I'm asking because I really don't know. If not the county, who is also broke (sorry about that Norm), then who? It all seems so far fetched to me. Who would spend all that money to bring an ALH team to Utica when they couldn't support one before. And that was a pretty darn good team too. If they do get a team I'll probably make a few games, as I think most hockey fans will. It's great hockey but I'll still go to all the UC home games and a few Colgate ones when UC is on the road. It's sure going to get busy at the AUD if it's true. Hope they can speed up the ticket sale line a little!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Benny - its true.
City is not the funder of the Aud auth.
Oz..the rankings are what they are....

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

no ranking is correct...either a tabulation of opinions made by humans or a tabulation of data weighted by a human or a list that has little visibility and a short shelf life...but it happens to be the only one that counts...does that make it correct? No, but it does make it matter....good luck, play on!

I beleive you fisheralum91, just wondering who does fund them. I can't beleive they're self sustaining, but I could be wrong. Could they be turning a profit with less than 20 home UC games and a handfull of other events? That would be great but with the overhead that place must have (heat, lights, ice, staff, etc) it's kind of hard to beleive. Of course beer sales must help alot.

Here is a copy of their 2011 financial statements.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Utica’s mayor wants professional hockey back at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Although he would not specify teams or leagues that might be involved, Robert Palmieri acknowledged there have been talks about bringing a pro team back to the Aud, which has housed Utica College’s very popular men’s hockey team for 12 seasons.

Personally, I'm figuring (and hoping) Utica is being played by the AHL franchise in order to get a better deal from the place they really want move.

Here is what the editorial board of the Utica Observer-Dispatch (the OD) thinks about that idea.

And here is what Utica College's President, Todd Hutton, had to say about the idea.

If it's the CT Whale that are contemplating the move, I can understand why....they are averaging less than 5k in a 15k arena, even with the NHL lockout. That's sad times, and definitely an indicator that Hartford should never have another big league franchise.

If the Aud can come close to sellout, they won't be trailing the Whale by much, and would provide an economic boost to a more deserving community. That said, if it fk$ the Pios more than the current poll, I'd definitely be against it. Even I'd they are only the 7th best team in D3 :D

I'm not sure I could turn down free professional hockey. :p

Thing is, even the AHL is a D-league, nevermind the ECHL and the UHL... Guys only play there if they have to, and they get the hell out the instant they can do so.

As I said, it amounts to rooting for a sweater.

Thanks for the links; they were very informative.

I really cannot fathom that either the AHL or The Aud thinks that this could work for any length of time... And building sky-boxes? That's utterly insane.

(And if it requires a bond from the taxpayers -The Aud is county-owned, I believe- fuggedaboutit.)

PS: The Warden went to redeem our season-ticket seats today, and the wait to do so was 45 minutes at 3 PM. If you don't have season tickets, seems as though you'd better show-up pretty early on Thursday morning to secure yourself a spot... Looks like Utica will actually have an honest-to-God sellout on Saturday, with a fanny in every seat for the first time this year.

If Utica wins their next game, are they able to host the (March 2) ECAC-W final? I think you guys said the conflict with the high school tourney only impacted their potenital to host in the NCAA tourney...just trying to confirm.

(Sorry to ask - I'm sure it is posted previously somewhere...)

Here is the link to the events calendar at the Aud.

http://www.uticaaud.org/pages/eventscalendar.cfm?msort=3&cyear=2009&mlink=3

Looks all clear for March 2nd... even if it does say 2009 (I believe that the year is just incorrect as the dates do match).
