Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Plush Carnage

Plush Carnage

I saw in Russell’s recap that tonight is the New York SASH Teddy Bear Toss at the Aud. With the attendance numbers Utica is pulling-in, this should be a sight to see if participation is high. Someone please be prepared to catch this on video and put it up here for all to enjoy.

Oh, and Fishman’81 – I know it may be extremely difficult, but please, please resist the urge to throw one of those annoying “wandering spectators” on the ice when this happens!! :D

Cheers!!!
Dave

Here you go, Dave (hopefully....). Don't know who's video it is, but I got the link from ucpioneers.com, the college's athletic web site. New attendance record set tonight. I heard that folks were turned away during the 1st period tonight, and I see the attendance is listed at 4000 on the stats sheet. I had to run some squatters out of our seats tonight. Probably some of my students.......

Very nice that some of the Salve Regina players helped to "round up" some of the stuffed critters. (Not all visiting teams do......)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Official attendance was 3,976 or so, and there were a number of doe-eyed families with teddy bears in hand waiting outside the doors an hour into the game for any vacated seats that might turn up. (That was kinda sad, on many different levels.)

The game itself was a dog. It looked to be competitive enough early on, but it degenerated into an embarrassing 12-0 rout in the 3rd.

As a fan, I'd have to say that that UC under-schedules itself right now. I would prefer to see more competitive OOC games. Maybe try to pencil-in as many SUNY teams as is humanly possible..? At least that would make for better travel conditions and fewer blowouts.

Clearly the TBT is a popular promotion, and goes for a good cause, but I hate it just the same. I'd prefer to see people simply deposit the stuffed critters in receptacles as they enter, than to have them fling 2-3 thousand of them on the ice after UC scores... That really kills UC's momentum and generally slows down the game in general. (And I'm guessing that the visiting team really despises being pelted with all those cute lil' furry packages of cuddly love.)

Sincerely,

The Grinch

They play six games against SUNYAC teams this year and possibly a seventh against Platty...

They might as well join..

:p

I'm for them joining and being the team that could take over the SUNYAC from Oswego St. ;)

I'd like to see them stay in the ECAC West, and wait for one more team to join (Canton, maybe?) and finally give that league a Pool A bid, although anything that would reduce the board dominance of Oswego would be a good thing :D :p (Oswego fans, don't take offense, it's a joke :D)

Okay, that is hysterical.

Hey, just be glad it wasn't a canned food drive. :D

Re: Plush Carnage

That is pretty cool... thanks for posting the video!!

But I gotta say, it’s a good thing this wasn’t coupled with some form of “Chuck-a-Puck” contest... major fail with only 3-5 making it inside the center ice faceoff circle!! :D

(Alright, I’m done being a smart arse... for now) Well done, Utica. Well done.

..."Toss a Tot"?...

Now that's an idea whose time has come!

Excellent point! :D

...And as far as Utica joining the SUNYAC, I haven't read anything to lead me to believe that it's going to happen. Geography aside, it's simply a poor fit for the State schools in every aspect excepting hockey, in which case it would be terrific, but mostly for UC. (Although I wouldn't expect to see the Pioneers supplanting Oswego as the team to beat right away, in any case.)

I agree with NUProf that adding another program to the W is the way to go, but I would imagine that another pricey private school would be a more realistic option than Canton. (Aren't they a SUNY institution, too?)

Canton is located in the right area to join the ECAC West, and they don't plan on becoming an all-sports member of the SUNYAC. This means their hockey affiliation is uncertain. They are, of course, still a ways out in the DIII pipeline (I think they have expressed their intentions, but I don't know if they have even done the exploratory year)

I agree. But they're going to have to be willing to play a few more OOC road games. In the long run, playing strong teams on the road in front of 500 people will do far more for them on a national level than continuing to schedule these Tomato Cans at home in front of 4,000...
