Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Meh. The Pool B has basically been the W's AQ for all intents and purposes since RIT left (I know it's gone this season.) In recent history it hasn't been unusual for 3 teams from the W to get bids, only to exit in the first round.

Top to bottom the league is very strong and has lots of parity. But it is my opinion that type of competition all season long should make it's teams more dangerous in the post season, not less dangerous. I don't buy the "our conference is so tough we had to work harder than everyone else to get here and now we've got nothing left in our tanks" argument.

Truth be told, I don't really buy it either... ;)

I just couldn't figure out why a conference that won so regularly OOC in the RS fared so poorly in the post-season...But, having looked at the archives, there are a few things that might be telling factors in the W's NCAA blues.

Going back to '07-'08, when the W started getting bids again, they have only played 3 of 9 games on home ice, excluding the 5 head-to-head matches with other W teams and the 2 neutral-ice contests in Lake Placid. Kinda skews the W/L numbers a bit.(And the W went 2-1 in their only 3 OOC NCAA home games, BTW.)

Clearly the W eats its own young, which results in lower seeds and a steeper climb once the seeds are meted out.

Game is crucial to Utica, for PWR and national recognition. Oswego obliterated Elmira twice last weekend, it won't be easy. With a win against Oz last year I think the Pios would have been dancing.

Dancing ,well Oz has to have a great yr as well for the game to mean a lot in all those nutty ranking...it will be a great game for sure with a buzzed:D/buzzing large crowd......do they serve any good beer at these games ??

Not sure at all that PWR at the D-3 level really carries much weight... (I've seen no evidence to think that it gets any significant consideration by the selection committee, at any rate.)Still, beating OSU would be a huge win for Utica, if only for the subjective juice such a victory seems to have for the guys in the smoky room who make those decisions.

Watched the second OSU/EC on the tube the other day... As a result, I'm not predicting a UC win. I'm gonna guess 4-2 Oswego, with an ENG, but of course I'm hoping that Thierren stands on his head all night and steals one for the Pioneers.Should be a fun night of hockey in The Aud.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

They serve Labatt Blue...so I'm good. Think maybe Saranac too.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

my question is, if you're gary heenan, do you stick with the alternating two headed monster and start Therrien, or do you go with someone who played considerably well against oswego in Evan Smith? I remember after the first period last year in Oswego evan was total shutdown for the rest of that game, particularly on his much, much stronger glove side.

Personally i'd take Evan and his slightly more aggressive style between the pipes, gotta go big or go home in this one.

And on the other side of the coin, looks like Beckwith's out for oswego this weekend, barring any surprises. Andrew Hare is probably going to start in his place. Hare had a good weekend against Elmira that was good enough to win SUNYAC netminder of the week, but that was only after 2 starts the previous year, and in one of those he got shelled by hamilton in oswego. I just dont know how consistent Andrew Hare is just yet, but he could continue his hot streak and put us away.

Yeah, I think utica will do very well this weekend, they have alot of time together coming off of their European trip. I'm going to call a close game on this one. No matter who wins they'll definitely have to earn it with 2 teams I could see going to the NCAAs at the end of the year.

At the Saranac booth, they usually have one or two brews on tap and then just about all the others available from bottles, as well as root beer!

I didnt even know they sold the root beer at the aud.....
how bad does that stuff bite into the wallet?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Don't know about the root beer, but I'm pretty sure that the real beer is $5 a pop, for a (maybe) 16 oz. cup.

I never drink there, as I am always driving, but I *occasionally* enjoy a beer at home, and I can assure you that Saranac makes a number of very good boutique beers. If you're a passenger, perhaps sample the IPA or the Black and Tan...(The Utica Club lager is ahead of the pack, too.)

I don't really know about the non Saranac draft, but the cups at the booth where they serve the bottled beer (they open one and pour it into a cup) is 12 oz. It is $5 for either the bottled beers or the draft beer.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Seems like UC is always on the short end of these one goals games. Nice to be on the good side for once.
Very entertaining game and a big win that will look good on the NCAA resume come March.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Simply put, the Pioneers did great tonight, did what they had to do and played very disciplined against a good Lakers team. If the Pioneers play like this all season long, don't be surprised if they get a bid into the NCAA Tourny. Oswego has absolutly nothing to worry though in my opinion, they played great as well and will definitly be on the look out for revenge come january at home. That will be one HELL of a game, no doubt in anyone's mind about that i think.

Don't know how far the Pioneers will rise in the rankings come monday, my guess is not much. The season is still early so i'll say they go up to #9 at the most.

Also their were far more than 3499 fans at the Aud tonight. Someone prove to me there were 500 empty seats in that building tonight.....there were not. Easily should have been listed at 3800 or so, maybe even more. Utica needed the crowd tonight to help them along, and thats exactly what they got.

Lastly, Oswego honestly (not to down-grade them AT ALL) was not as good as i thought they were. Maybe Utica is just better this year or somthing? really don't know... but whatever the case may be, they have to improve on their aggressiveness just a tad bit in my opinion. Not a whole lot has to be improved on their part though because obviously they held Utica for most of the game to within a one goal margin etc... Oswego St. will definitly go far this season once again.

Don't know what it was, Oswego just didn't seem to impress me as much as i thought they would, especially after the explosive wins they had from the previous week against Elmira.

Good win for the Pioneers, this team is definitly going somewhere this season, BIG win psychologically and huge for a bid at the NCAA Tourny.

I have the same sentiments as you. 1.) They don't impress me that much yet either 2.) I agree whole heartedly with the aggressiveness lacking on our end. 3.) Elmira is just not very good right now, that's how the Lakers demolished them. I don't think you guys have a lot to worry about. You have great team speed and Theirren (sp) is a solid goaltender. I have no doubt the Pios will win the ECAC West barring no major injuries. I think the Lakers have a lot to think about this week and fix in practice.

So basically you hate the SEC for their argument too haha. ;).

I am very surprised though utica did beat Oswego after seeing the Oswego scoring what 20 goals in three games? Then Hobart lost a tough one to Cortland tonight whos had Hobarts number the past 3 years now(0-2-1) while Neumann and Elmira didnt play and M-ville won in their exhibition. I think we could see a very interesting ECACW with Utica possibly winning it.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

HUGE Win for the Pios !!! Good things will happen this year, great to see !

Not sure, I don't really follow college football.

Doesn't the national champion quite often hail from the SEC? If so, that right there would be a pretty big difference between the ECAC-W in men's D3 hockey and the SEC in football...
